Introduction Welcome back! We have two very significant weeks to spend together on a very small subject with big effects. Bitterness. How often we can so flippantly say to one another, “oh, you’re just bitter”. Or, “don’t get so bitter”. We can sometimes speak of something so lightly, but God views it very differently. It is vital that we learn from Scripture concerning every part of our lives, including the subject of bitterness. What is the bitterest thing you have ever tasted? What characteristics do bitter tastes and bitter feelings share? Bitterness has the sound of “bite” in it. Bitterness makes us feel “biting” toward others. What are the emotions inside that give us this “biting” feeling? As we look into this subject of bitterness, it is vital that we remember to dig deep and get down to the root of that bitterness so that it can be plucked out!

Bitterness Defiles Us Let’s begin with an essential passage to our understanding of why a little bitterness is really a big deal. Read Hebrews 12:14-17. Here we see we are to pursue peace with all men and that we do not allow any root of bitterness to spring up and cause trouble. Before taking root, bitterness is sown in our lives. What are some things that can sow bitterness in our lives? (i.e. feeling used) Which relationships are most prone to bitterness? (the most common answer is probably ~ In-laws!) Verse 15 is critical. Read it again. The author of Hebrews equates “coming short of the grace of God” with having a “root of bitterness”. Comment on this shocking outcome of bitterness. And how can bitterness that ONE person may have against another defile many?

Bitterness and Unforgiveness Bitterness happens in a moment and lasts a lifetime. When there is bitterness in our heart toward another person, this bitterness can so easily turn into unforgiveness. It is vital that we are not bitter towards one another lest we develop an unforgiving heart. Think through the Lord’s Prayer that we say each week in church. What phrase in it reveals that our forgiveness for our sins from God has a “simultaneous condition” to it. What is it?

Bitterness Gives the Devil an Upper Hand Read 2 Corinthians 2:5-11. Paul and the church had someone who did them wrong. It was legitimate. He realized that this situation opened the church to the devil’s schemes. Forgiveness was essential. Describe why bitterness goes completely against what a Christian should be. How does Satan have an advantage over us if we are bitter toward someone? How can Satan nurse bitterness that can creep into our lives? As a church, (without giving specifics), we have experienced wrongs toward us. Sometimes, we will hear untrue rumors or watch our Pastors being defamed. This situation puts us in a position of vulnerability to bitterness. What are ways we can follow the example of Paul?

Getting Beyond Bitterness and Into Love It is not enough to just remove the bitterness in our hearts. We will be in a worse state than before if we simply do not have anything against anyone. We will be left in a state of lukewarmness. Read John 13:35. Why is it important to not only have the bitterness removed but to have your heart filled with love for that person you were bitter against? What are some steps we must take ourselves to turn our bitterness to love? (i.e. Ask God how you can say one kind or encouraging word to them this week.) It is vital that we allow God to COMPLETE the work He starts in our hearts. Do not just thank Him for removing the bitterness you had. Ask Him for a fervent love for that person!

Spend Time in Prayer Seek your heart and see if there is any bitterness at all toward anyone. Ask that God would remove that root of bitterness and give you a great love for that person. He can do it! What may seem impossible to you is possible with God!
