Directions    

A  team  of  Penn  State  Extension  educators  lead  the   Start Farming program  in  collaboration  with  The   Seed  Farm,  the  Lehigh  County  Agricultural  Business           Incubator;  and  Pennsylvania  Farm  Link,  a  program  of   the  Pennsylvania  Department  of  Agriculture.     Start Farming launched  in  2009  in  response  to    

increased  interest  in  farm  start-­‐up  from     ĐŽŵŵƵŶŝƚLJŵĞŵďĞƌƐ͘dŚĞƉƌŽŐƌĂŵ͛ƐŐŽĂůŝƐƚŽ   enhance  the  success  of  beginning  farmers  by     providing  information  and  hands-­‐on  training  in     production,  marketing,  financial  management,  as   well  as  land  and  other  resource  acquisition.       This  Penn  State  College  of  Agricultural  Sciences  program  is    funded  in   part  by  Pennsylvania  counties,  the  Commonwealth  of  Pennsylvania,  the   U.  S.  Department  of  Agriculture,  and  by  the  Agriculture  and  Food   Research  Initiative  of  the  National  Institute  of  Food  and  Agriculture   grant  #2009-­49400-­05869.

Start Farming͛Ɛ  Organic  Vegetable  Production  for  Beginning  Farmers  

Registration  Instructions   Registration   Directions:     To   register   by   check,   please  fill  out  the  form  below,  detach  and  mail   it   to   the   address   at   the   bottom   with   your             payment.    

Objectives   The  objective  of  this  course  is  to  introduce     aspiring  and  new  vegetable  producers  to  diverse   production  strategies  and  provide  a  framework  for   effective  farm  production  planning.    

Who  should  attend?   People   planning   to   make   the   leap   from                 vegetable  gardening  to  production  for  profit.   Beginning  organic  vegetable  producers  who  are   ready   to   refine   their   techniques   in   order   to       optimize  their  production  and  profit.  

What  to  expect:   Presentations  by  Penn  State  Extension                     Educators  and  experienced  farmers.   Film  presentation  of  weed  control  and  other   techniques.   Interactive  discussions.   Trips  to  the  Lehigh  County  Agricultural                       Incubator  and  local  farms.   Hands-­‐on  experience  trying  new  techniques  and   tools  appropriate  for  both  small  and  large   farms.   A  detailed  notebook  containing  production     information  for  each  topic.   CD  containing  planning  tools,  including                     succession  planting  and  crop  rotation.     Sustainable  Vegetable  Production  Text.   Organic  Vegetable  Production  Guide.
