Invader Zim is an American/Canadian kids TV show on Nickelodeon, created by Jhonen Vasquez. It revolves around an insect-like alien, Zim, going to Earth and trying to take it over. However, a large headed human boy named Dib tries to stop him. The world of Invader Zim is a horribly twisted version of Earth. Nearly everyone is stupid, many people have various facial abnormalities that would be impossible in real life, things such as school and delicious are misspelled to be skool and deelishus, and the overall mood of everything is much darker. Zim is an Irken, sent from the planet Irk as an invader to conquer Earth. Fortunately for Earth and everyone on it, he is really bad at it. Zim attends skool, in Miss Bitters' class, along with Dib and certain recognizable skoolchildren. Dib is a human boy who has an interest in the paranormal and wishes to become a paranormal investigator when he grows up. He is often teased for having a large head, even though his head is about the same size as everyone else's. However, in 'God Save the Dib', a redesigning of Dib's overall look in season one, he was actually given a bigger head. Dib tries to stop Zim from taking over the world, and he and the alien are bitter enemies. GIR is Zim's SIR unit, a robot given to every Irken invader to help them on their mission of taking over a planet. GIR is made of leftover SIR parts and whatever the Almighty Tallest could find in their pockets, so he is quite stupid. He serves as the shows comic relief character, and even in the most serious of situations, manages to lighten the mood with his random and crazy personality. Gaz is Dib's purple haired sister. She loves to play on her Gameslave, a parody of Nintendo's Gameboy. She is quite dark and menacing, and hates both Zim and Dib, often hurting and harassing them. She has been shown to have a love for pizza, specifically Bloaty's Pizza Hog brand. Zim is actually not a real invader, but the Tallest, the leaders of the Irken empire, tricked him into believing that he was, and sent him to an uncharted planet on the edges of the galaxy, which happened to be Earth. He tries to take over the planet, but repeatedly fails. Dib, not realizing that Zim is an idiot and could never take over Earth, tries to stop him. Dib tries to reveal to everyone that Zim is an alien through his horrible disguise, but everyone thinks Dib is crazy. Dib has no actual friends. Zim is commonly known and addressed throughout the skool as “the green kid”, and Dib as “that crazy kid that thinks that Zim is an alien”. They are both unpopular and thought to be crazy. Zim explains his horrible disguise as having a skin condition, although a skin condition would not explain his green skin and lack of ears and nose to any sane person, however Zim's world being the way it is, everyone believes Zim's excuses, and just ignores him most of the time. Jhonen Vasquez is the creator of Invader Zim, and many other works. He is a comic book artist, writing and drawing comic books like Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, Squee!, I Feel Sick: A Story About A Girl, and many others. Invader Zim was the only television show Mr. Vasquez has ever done. His favorite character on Invader Zim is Dib. Jhonen constantly changes his own hair color. In an Internet interview about Invader Zim when asked “What is your current hair color?”, he humorously replied “Purple. It's a Gaz phase.” There are various easter eggs in Invader Zim, such as cameos of the producers and bloody GIR. Bloody GIR is a still frame of GIR, Zim's SIR unit, covered in blood. The image was originally going to be in the episode “GIR Goes Crazy And Stuff”, but the Nickelodeon crew wouldn't allow it. In response to this, and many other instances of Nickelodeon not allowing violent scenes, in many of the episodes of Invader Zim the animation team put in a single frame of a slightly transparent version of the bloody GIR image. The Nickelodeon people only discovered this after the show was canceled, and did not remove it. This is because it is only viewable if you have some way to watch the episode frame by frame. At various times in the series the producers of the show can be seen as background characters. The most notable of these is Jhonen Vasquez, who appears with reddish orange hair, glasses, a trenchcoat, and Johnny the Homicidal Maniac's boots. He and the director of Invader Zim can be seen talking over the script of the first episode, the Nightmare Begins, in the episode “Germs”. Jhonen Vasquez can be seen in the episode “The Wettening” choking on a fish.
