iPad, iPod and iPhone Setup Tasks This document is a guide for Victoria University staff and post-graduate students for setting up an iPad, iPod Touch or an iPhone to access University resources.
Connecting to a wireless network Your device can connect to a local wireless network to access email, internet and application content. Most wireless networks require a username and password or code before they can be connected to and used. 1 - Click the Home button and touch Settings
3 – Click the Home button and open Safari. Enter the relevant username and password for the wireless network
2 – Touch the Wi-Fi tab and ensure Wi-Fi is On. Once available, touch the relevant local wireless network e.g. ‘victoria’ for VUW’s network access
Connecting to a mobile network If your device has a mobile SIM card installed, you can access email, internet and application content where ever there is a mobile signal. A mobile network connection is also valuable when travelling overseas. Only follow these instructions if your device has a mobile SIM card installed. 1 - Click the Home button and touch Settings
3 – If installing your own SIM, your providers APN Settings will also need to be entered to access the internet. To do this touch APN Settings and then APN.
2 – Touch the Cellular Data tab and ensure Cellular Data is On. If you are outside of New Zealand, Data Roaming will also need to be enabled while travelling.
APN Settings for New Zealand providers are: Telecom: internet.telecom.co.nz Vodafone: www.vodafone.net.nz 2 Degrees: internet TelstraClear: www.telstraclear.net.nz Note: When overseas, please turn Cellular Data OFF when not in use. This will restrict the amount of data used when overseas which can decrease potentially large phone bills. Please do not perform application upgrades or installations when using roaming cellular data overseas.
Setup your university email account on your device Before setting up email on your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch, please ensure you have access to the internet via a wireless or mobile network. 1 - Click the Home button and touch Settings
2 – Touch the Mail, Contacts, Calendars Tab
3 - Touch Add Account...
4 - Touch Microsoft Exchange
5 - Touch Email and enter your VUW email address using the onscreen keyboard
9 - Touch Next
6 - Touch Domain and enter STAFF using the onscreen keyboard. 7 - Touch Username and enter your staff username using the onscreen keyboard. E.g. doejo 8 - Touch Password and enter your VUW staff password using the onscreen keyboard. Please note that if you do not know this information, you will need to contact the ITS Service Desk.
10 – Touch Server and type webmail.vuw.ac.nz and then touch Next
11 - Touch the services that you'd like to sync. Mail - syncs your Microsoft Exchanges email account with your device. You can view inbox and other folders. Contacts - syncs your Microsoft Exchange contact list with your device. Calendar - syncs your Microsoft Exchange Calendar to your device. Appointments and meetings will be transferred across.
If you turn Contacts on, you will be asked to decide whether to keep your local contacts or not. Select your preferred option. Touch Save and you are all done.
Setting a passcode on your device Setting a passcode on your device adds a level of security in case of loss or theft. Without a passcode the device will let anyone who has it send email and read documents on the device. 1 - Click the Home button and touch Settings
2 – Touch the General tab and then Passcode Lock
3 - Touch Turn Passcode On
4 – Enter and confirm a 4 digit number that you will remember
This will lock your device and prompt for the code when turning on or resuming from standby.
5 – Extra security measures – You can also set your iPad to erase all data on the device if the passcode is incorrectly entered after 10 attempts. This is recommended if your device has sensitive data or account information on it. To do this, select Erase Data to on and accept the warning when setting up your passcode.
Restricting devices for Research and Teaching projects Devices can be restricted to only allow use of particular applications and functionality. This is very useful if devices are being used in public or loaned to a project stakeholder group. 1 – Ensure all applications that are required for the Research or Teaching projects are installed. Click the Home button and touch Settings
2 – Touch the General tab and then Restrictions
3 - Touch Enable Restrictions
4 – Enter and confirm a 4 digit number that you will remember
This will lock your changes to restrictions. Code will be required to remove or amend restrictions. 5 – Select the restrictions you would like to apply to the device
Descriptions of available restrictions are: Allow: When set to ‘Off’ disables the use of the application of functionality on the device e.g. Turning ‘Safari’ off disables web browsing. Turning off ‘Installing Apps’ or ‘Deleting Apps’ means only the currently installed applications will be able to be used on the device and cannot be removed. To use the device for one or two particular applications, install the required applications and then turn ‘Installing Apps’ and ‘Deleting Apps’ off. Allow Changes: Restricts the ability to turn on location service (like GPS) or add/remove accounts on the device. Allowed Content: Provides the ability to restrict what content can be purchased or viewed on the device. You can disable further application purchasing and restrict content to age limits. Game Center: Restricts the use of Game Center functions online game play.
Turning on ‘Airplane Mode’ Airplane Mode turns off all wireless signals from your device so it can be used safely on domestic or international flights. Airplane Mode should be set when prompted by flight announcements. 1 – Click the Home button and touch Settings
2 – On the Airplane Mode tab, turn Airplane Mode ‘On’
All wireless connections will turn off and not turn back on if you power down the device.
4 - On the Airplane Mode tab, turn Airplane Mode ‘Off’ to re-enable all wireless connections.
