LEBANON: Refugee Response Plan (RRP5) - Fact Sheet STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE: SITUATION OVERVIEW: IRAQ MONTHLY UPDATE - FEBRUARY 2015

WASH

NEEDS ANALYSIS:

92,787 Syrian refugees benefit from access to adequate quantity of safe water.

Funding for the continuation of operation and maintenance of the WASH facilities and the WASH services remains a critical challenge.

FEBRUARY HIGHLIGHTS:

The drainage of grey water in Darashakran camp and solution to the saline water in Basirma camp continue to be challenging. UNICEF, the government’s technical directorates and NGO partners are still studying the possible technical solutions.

Duhok: The sewage disposal system was completed and tested by UNICEF, NRC and FRC. The transition to the local management for increased sustainability under the resilience objective of the 3RP is currently been planned. Erbil: In Qushtapa camp, UNICEF, the Directorate of Surrounding Water and Qatar Red Crescent, finalized the construction and testing phase of the water and sewerage network, which is ready to be handed over to government agencies. DRC and ACF continue supporting the effort of waste management and garbage disposal in this camp. Relocation of families started in Kawergosk camp, and the repairs in the water network are on-going. Water trucking is being provided as an interim measure until the works are finished. In Darashakran camp UNICEF and Relief International (RI) distributed 2,074 hygiene kits to refugees and in Kawergosk NRC distributed 2, 858 hygiene kits

The frequency of garbage collection was reduced by 50% in refugee camps the KR-I municipal councils due to lack of fuel for trucks resulting from low level funding by the central government for this particular activity. The situation should improve as soon as fuel is restocked.

Sulaymaniyah: UNICEF connected the three newly installed boreholes to the 4 reservoirs (with total capacity of 340m3). This makes a total of 5 functioning boreholes in Arbat camp. Anbar: In Al-Obaidi camp, even with the challenges to access Al Obaidi camp 890 refugees in are provided with safe drinking water by network from Al-Phosphate project through UNICEF’S partner, AFKAR Society.
