OAKLAND COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Is your Program Completeable Within Normal Time? Structure, Scheduling and Consequences for Students TRENDS Conference October 2015 Kelly Perez-Vergara, Zheng Wang & Dawn Perkowski
Why did we do this? • Student complaints • HLC Annual Conference 2013 • OCC ranking for graduation rate at the bottom (e.g., IPEDS, VFA) • Our college scheduling process does not occur from a program perspective – Hundreds of faculty create a schedule for a couple of courses each, and this is rolled together into a master schedule for 5 campuses, ~800 courses, and ~130 programs).
Barriers to Success for this Project Scott-Clayton 2011- too much choice leads to frustration, mistakes and drop-out, institutions need to provide more guidance to students and less choice. Cultural challenge- some believe we should not tell students what to take and when to take it… Solution- we’re not, it’s merely a recommendation showing that there is at least one full time pathway through a program.
Approach Collect data to understand where issues are present and determine what changes are needed. Share the results with stakeholders to promote action:
– College Leadership- overall results – Academic Deans- highlight specific problems program by program – Faculty- provide an opportunity to review current problems (with dean) and plan for future pathways through the program during program review
Data Collection 1. How many required program courses do not run in a given year? 2. Is there at least one full time pathway through each program within normal time? 3. Are students more likely to graduate within normal time when they are in a program that has at least one full time pathway through a program within normal time?

Programs that run all required courses are 3.7 times more likely to meet the completions benchmark, compared to programs that do not run all required courses in a year.
2. Full Time Pathways “Completeability” The time needed to complete a program either from a historical or projected perspective, for a specific cohort of students (i.e., start term), based on program requirements, course sequencing and scheduling.
2. Full Time Pathways Goal is to identify issues related to the following: • Course sequencing • Pre-requisites • Degree requirements • Number of credits needed for the degree • Summer attendance requirements • Forced part time • Completeability within normal completion time
