advisor’s letter CELEBRATING DIVERSITY ON CAMPUS

At Taylor’s University, we are fortunate to have students, faculty and staff of different ethnicities and cultures, as well as with various backgrounds, beliefs and interests because this makes for a dynamic intellectual and social environment. Over the past few months, the Taylor’s University Student Experience (SE) Division and several student groups have made a conscious effort to share this richness and promote diversity on campus. Through various events and activities such as organising the vibrant World Fest, a world cultures event, showcasing Maldivian and Mauritian cultures, bringing together Korean students on campus for the first-ever official gathering and spotlighting the refugee cause and verbal bullying, the message of appreciating and respecting people’s diverse cultures and each individual’s uniqueness and differences was spread throughout the campus community. It was great to see both staff and students alike getting involved and supporting these meaningful initiatives. As we live in an increasingly interconnected world, it is vital for us—especially at a university, a place of learning, discovery and inquiryto create an environment that fosters tolerance, intercultural interactions and open acceptance of different beliefs and perspectives. I’m proud of the work that has been accomplished by SE staff and students in this area thus far, but there is more we can do. Therefore, we are committed to investing time and resources in diversity efforts for the long term so that on our campus, diversity will enrich our experiences, encourage dialogue and break down stereotypes.

Sincerely,

Angela Pok

Experiencing the Cultural Diversity at World Fest ‘15

It was certainly a night to remember for the hundreds of guests to experience the richness of world cultures at World Fest 2015 organised by the Taylor’s University International Student Council (TUISC) at the Grand Hall on June 5, 2015. The signature event focused on creating global citizens by uniting the youth of today as one people, enriched by individual differences and united by the common thread of humanity. Dressed in their “cultural retro” costume, the guests from various institutions and of different nationalities gathered in one place that was colourfully decorated in an Arabic theme, savored mouth-watering gastronomical delights of various continents, enjoyed 12 high-octane cultural performances and other activities prepared for them. Some lucky ones even walked away with lucky draw prizes courtesy of Club Med, Grand Hyatt, Holiday Tours, Maxis, Nescafe and many more. The highlight of the event was the launch of two key initiatives— the Taylor’s University Global Strategy and the Taylor’s Uniiversity Summer School programme—by Minister of Education II Y.B. Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh who officiated World Fest 2015 that evening. He was accompanied by our Vice Chancellor & President, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Hassan Said and Pro Vice Chancellor of Global Engagement, Prof. Perry Hobson. Kudos to TUISC for planning and executing such an exciting event that truly promoted cultural integration and diversity.

The Bounce Campaign 2.0 Makes a Comeback The Bounce Campaign 2.0 returned to Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus for the second time on April 21, 2015, after receiving an overwhelming response from 1,200 students when it was first introduced in November 2014. Organised by the Taylor’s University Student Council (TUSC), the purpose of the campaign is two-fold: to provide an avenue for students to relive childhood memories and to reduce stress, as well as to garner feedback from them about welfare issues on campus by administering a survey. To attract students’ attention, a bouncy castle in the shape of Batman was set up in the middle of the Amphitheatre. There were also giveaways from sponsors like Pentel, Pocky, Hovid, Ribena, Cocoaland, Miaow Miaow and Mighty White.

A group of Taylor’s University student leaders were privileged to witness the 26th ASEAN Summit Opening Ceremony on April 27, 2015, at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. Attended by 10 ASEAN leaders, the opening ceremony dazzled the delegates with a hologram presentation of iconic buildings in each ASEAN member country played on stage, while the Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato’ Seri Najib Razak launched GOASEAN, the world’s first ASEAN-focused travel channel that will serve as a platform for ASEAN member countries to jointly promote tourism in ASEAN. It was a meaningful experience for the group to be part of the significant event.

“It opened up my mind. I realised how small one person is in the grand scheme of things. However, in every person is the potential to change the world. The leaders of the ASEAN countries are human themselves, yet the future of ASEAN and its inhabitants rest on their decisions and words. As long as you have a dream and the determination, we all could be the leaders of tomorrow.” - Lim Jun Tong, Taylor’s University Student Council Campus Integration Committee Member and a student from School of Medicine

The month of April gave the Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus community a chance to immerse themselves in the richness of Mauritian and Maldivian cultures, thanks to the Mauritian Cultural Night and Maldivian Cultural Night showcases. Held on April 10 and 17, 2015 respectively, over 500 guests joined in the celebrations, enjoying a wide array of gastronomical delights and colourful and energetic dance performances. A special thanks to Ms. Harisha Teeluck, President of the Taylor’s University Mauritian Society and Mr. Muaviyath Mohamed, President of the Taylor’s University Maldivian Society for organising such wonderful events that provided great insights on both cultures.

Support for the REFUGEE CAUSE A special campaign called “Borderless” was created at Taylor’s University (TU) to bring attention to the plight of refugees in Malaysia. Held in April, the one-month event kick-started with a nine-day awareness campaign in front of the Student Life Centre (SLC), where relevant information about refugees was disseminated to the campus community. The grand event, Into the Unknown, took place inside SLC from April 27-29, 2015, and received overwhelming support from Taylorians. It featured a maze with three themed sections, namely War, Discrimination and Loss, which gave participants a chance to experience a

simulation of a refugee’s journey. The first stage represented the difficulty of salvaging items necessary to live in times of war. The second stage showcased the unjust discrimination faced by refugees and their strong will to survive despite their circumstances. The final stage highlighted the sense of loss refugees experience as they are separated from loved ones. At the end of this stage, participants completed an online survey to rate their experience and gauge their level of awareness about the life of refugees. Other activities during this campaign included the collection of ‘sugar cubes’—sweet and encouraging messages from TU students and staff to give to refugee children, the sale of customised button badges and T-shirts and the collection of funds. A total of RM3,650 was raised and donated to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Malaysia to support the welfare of refugees. The Borderless campaign certainly played a part in making a positive stand for the refugee community in Malaysia and helping the campus community to empathise with their situation.

Spotlight on Verbal Bullying

To shed light on the issue of verbal bullying, the Inked 2015 campaign took place at Taylor’s University (TU). The month-long event began on April 6, 2015, and came to a close with a finale event that focused on the word “splash” on May 8, 2015. It symbolised the breaking free from the chain of negative words used to tie people down. The highlight of the event was the paint splashing activity where participants were invited to splash the Inked canvas with an array of different colours using Nippon paint. There were also performances, free food and the unveiling of the finished canvas. Present at the event were representatives from TU Student Experience department, Child Line Malaysia and United Nations Children’s Fund Malaysia. In her opening speech, Datin P.H. Wong from Child Line Malaysia said the Inked initiative was very timely because her organisation has seen a significant increase in the number of children and teenagers calling in to report verbal and emotional abuse. Through this campaign, the organising committee hopes that there will be better awareness about the seriousness of verbal bullying and participants will uphold their pledge of saying no to this type of abuse. 10

Getting to Know Malaysia First-Hand “To Know Malaysia is to Love Malaysia” is an apt slogan to encapsulate the heart of the Exchange Engagement Programme (EEP)—engaging and immersing the University’s exchange students in all things Malaysia. A group of 19 exchange students, along with four Global Ambassadors, spent the day on April 11, 2015, under the Light & Easy Evening Sightseeing excursion, visiting a local mosque in Shah Alam, followed by Bukit Melawati, a historical site in Kuala Selangor. The group then enjoyed local seafood delicacies before ending the excursion with a boat ride where they got to see magical fireflies. The students were also given other personalised excursions that involved the same objective such as the Journey of Arts, Crafts & Matters of the Heart (April 26), where they visited an orphanage, as well as Batik Jadi and Royal Selangor Pewter; Kinesthetic Saturday (June 13), which gave them an insight into the Malay traditional lifestyle by learning kinship eating, traditional archery, horse riding and fishing; and The Big EL – Romancing Nature (June 20) that involved community service engagement by helping the Elephant Sanctuary rangers in cleaning cages and clearing the area. These activities have helped the students to foster humanistic empathy toward the less privileged and inculcate heightened religious tolerance and historical appreciation during their short stay in Malaysia.

Gaining Exposure to Indonesian Culture

In an effort to expand their global outlook, a group of Taylor’s University Global Ambassadors (GAs) participated in a two-week Short Course of Environmental Conservation and Indonesian Culture (See-Conic) at Semarang State University from April 6-20, 2015. They joined many other university students from different parts of the world to learn more about conservation values and Indonesian culture. The informative and exciting itinerary included things like Bahasa Indonesia class, performance art, batik art, sports and biodiversity. The experience will no doubt help the GAs to better perform their duty as the University’s brand ambassadors.

Table Tennis Takes Centre Stage

Organised by the Taylor’s University Table Tennis Club (TUTTC), the inaugural inter- institutional Table Tennis Tournament from June 6-7, 2015, was a successful event. The tournament, which was TUTTC’s first major project, took place in the Grand Hall of Taylor’s Lakeside Campus. TU Director of Student’s Affair Mr. Leonard Lim officiated the opening ceremony. A total of 20 teams consisting of 182 participants battled it out on the table tennis tables, including two primary school teams from

SJK (C) Jenjarom and two secondary school teams from Catholic High School. The remaining teams were from colleges and universities such as Help University, Sunway University and UTAR Perak. TU’s SIGMA team members played their hearts out to emerge champion in the tournament, receiving a cash prize of RM2,000. UTAR Perak’s team was 1st runner-up and the players received a cash prize of RM1,000. Finishing as joint 2nd runner-up were teams from Help University and Catholic High School (A). They each took home a cash prize of RM500. The Best Male Player and Best Female Player awards went to Aaron Chua from TU’s SIGMA and Gua Wan Mei from Help University, respectively. Overall, the tournament was a commendable first-time effort by TUTTC.

Dodging the Competition Living up to its favourite billing, the Taylor’s University Storm Dodgeball Club members dodged, dipped, dived and ducked their way to victory in the Taylor’s Invitational Dodgeball Tournament 2015. Organised by the club on June 14, 2015, the tournament attracted 12 men’s and 6 women’s teams from nine different universities with a total of 250 participants. Both the Taylor’s men’s and women’s teams emerged champions by beating the Inti International College Subang (IICS) Reapers men’s and women’s teams. TU Dodgeball Club’s feat certainly proved the accuracy of their chant of “How Strong Are We? Too Strong!”
