Jim Davis

What class are you teaching? I am currently teaching the Transition to Trainer class. It is the “Capstone” class required for all individuals engaged in any of the trades which offer apprenticeships through the state of Wisconsin. As the title suggests, the class is meant to foster the final segment of the apprenticeship training. Any trades that require apprenticeship training would attend this type of class, from electricians and steamfitters to cosmetologists and painters. I have worked with students in a wide variety of trades at BTC for the past 35 years.

What do you like best about teaching at Blackhawk? Students-The students enter the Transition to Trainer Class classroom with a vast wealth of knowledge and experience they are willing to share with the other students. Staff-Over the years I have encountered a number of staff personalities and each one of them

brings a certain style with them and willingness to help when needed. Facilities- I have found the facilities to be constantly updated as technology advances.

What interesting things would people like to know about the class? There are so many different backgrounds, experiences and credentials found in one room. With the talent and expertise gathered there you could pretty much build a home just from the students in that one room. This class was designed to foster a better understanding of human interaction between the journey level worker and the apprentice, and the diversity of the students makes for a great learning environment.

What kind of background do you need to teach this type of class? Having previous apprenticeship experience is needed to facilitate

a class like this. I served a five year apprenticeship in the plumbing field and know that it is critical in understanding what they are going through. In this class it is important to be flexible, understanding, empathetic, and nonjudgmental, as well as having the ability to relate to others and appreciate their point of view.

Have you learned things from the students you’ve taught at BTC? Through a purely humanistic standpoint it really hasn’t changed that much; people are still people. They may differ in appearance and look at life a little differently from each other, but we all still have the same basic needs and wants. I also tell them that we are all teachers in this class, I just happen to be the one standing up front. If people are willing to share who they are with each other, we all learn.
