Its out of this world

Magrathea... Is a sailing experience from another world... a world where Magrathea never fails to rise to the challenge. Whether powering upwind with her fully battened mainsail or gliding downwind with her asymmetric spinnaker, this is luxury sailing from another planet. And when she finally and reluctantly returns to safe harbour, it’s good to know you’re unlikely to be rubbing fenders with another like her. One of the more recent Oyster designs, few have been built and fewer are available for charter. Magrathea is a rare combination of performance, comfort, accommodation and pure maritime chic. Try as we may to paint the picture, the only real way to savour the experience is to relax in the spacious cockpit, drink in hand, as she sails serenely into the sunset. WHATS IN A NAME? The ancient planet of ‘Magrathea’ was one of the wealthiest in the galaxy due to its extraordinary trade. Its inhabitants built customised planets to order. These were fabulously expensive, so during the great galactic stock market crash they went into hibernation. Magrathea was slowly forgotten, and many believed the stories about the people who made planets were mere legend. The inhabitants of Magrathea were woken by a special order from some pan-dimensional beings, whose previous custom-made planet, Earth, had been destroyed. Shortly afterwards, Zaphod Beeblebrox arrived on the planet in search of fabulous wealth and answers to some questions he didn't know he wanted to ask. This incidentally resulted in a large new crater being formed on Magrathea's otherwise unexciting surface due to the sudden impact of a large Sperm Whale.

NEW HORIZONS IN ON BOARD COMFORT It matters little whether you’ve spent the previous hours making the most of a Force 4 or lazing in a sheltered anchorage. At the end of the day, what you want most of all are the creature comforts of the yacht’s stateroom, guest cabins and the understated style of the rich teak wood and ivory leather saloon. It’s the perfect setting from which to enjoy Magrathea’s state-of-the-art entertainment system. From the DVD library, flat screen television in the saloon and two double cabins, PS3 and Wii, individual Ipod and MP3 docking stations, to the more traditional relaxations of chess, board and children’s games.

Everything is to hand, even links to the outside world via broadband satellite connections for telephone, e-mail and internet, with WiFi for in harbour use and an internal WiFi and cable network for laptops. Naturally, air conditioning is installed to keep you cool on even the most tropical of evenings, while the wine refrigerator and icemaker ensure that serious sailors can keep their drink of choice at just the right temperature. And not all the toys are on the inside. The 4.5 metre rib with 60hp outboard is a popular daytime diversion, along with the water skis (twin and mono), wakeboard, ringos, snorkels and fins.

WITH MAGRATHEA, THE WORLD IS YOUR OYSTER From the month of May through to September, Magrathea can be found cutting a dash in the Mediterranean. The Balearics, Sardinia, Corsica or the Aeolian islands, with the original Vulcano, might appeal. Further east perhaps, she will be island hopping along the Croatian coast, or among the Greek or Turkish islands. From November to April, Magrathea sails the warm waters of the Caribbean. Here, where island hopping is a way of life, landfalls are never more than half day’s sail away. North Sound, the Pitons, Tobago Cays and Mustique, among so many others, all await.

Swimming with turtles, diving with nurse sharks or simply watching the dolphins play in Magrathea’s bow wave – nobody on board will be able to ignore the local wild life. It really depends on where she’s moored when you climb onboard. You’ll be able to checkout her location and the sailing options when making a booking.

A RESTAURANT WITH SEA VIEWS FROM EVERY TABLE Food on Magrathea is a vital ingredient of the onboard experience. It’s always expertly prepared using the very freshest local fare. In fact our chef insists on the food reflecting the traditional dishes of the region wherever possible. Which makes for an appetizing and richly eclectic menu to suit all tastes. This isn’t the time or place to offer up a full menu (one is available when you visit www.oysteryachtcharter.com/magrathea).

In the meantime, here’s a quick ‘taster’. Don’t miss the local fruit with your breakfast cereal. Try the coronation chicken with mango salsa at lunchtime. The canapés of roasted red pepper enchiladas with sour cream are a treat. And for dinner, we recommend the Mahi Mahi fillets with hollandaise sauce or perhaps the roast duck breast with morrello cherry sauce served on spicy potato cakes and sautéed spinach. Bon appetit.
