At the age of ten he was selling newspapers and learning some hard lessons in life. At the age of 17, he ventured to sea on a sealing ship. The turning point of his life was a thirty-day imprisonment, he decided to turn to education and pursue a career in writing. He married Bess Maddern (1876 – 1947) and they had two daughters, Joan and Bess (Becky). His second wife was Charmian Kittredge (1871-1955) with whom he had a daughter, Joy, who died in infancy.
