Insulator Steven Wallace (X33I) attended the event and was impressed by the large selection of tools. “So far, this event has been great,” said Wallace. “I’ve enjoyed going around and testing the different tools that are available for us to use. I’ve seen a lot of tools that I could benefit from, especially the drill power pack and sockets.” During the event more than 200 tools were checked out to shipbuilders. Winter Months Introduce Security Obstacles Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) Security Officers are responsible for the identification of all individuals on company property at all times. As the peak of the winter approaches and additional clothing is needed to stay warm, shipbuilders should adhere to the following measures: • Ensure that you comply with policy NN12-202 and wear your company ID badge on the outer garment, upper front portion of your body when entering a turnstile or door card reader. The badge should remain visible at all times until you exit the facility. • Remove all garments that cover your face to enable positive identification, especially when an officer approaches you or you are entering the facility or outlying building. Following these measures will not only mitigate false identification, but it will also reduce the chances for delays when entering and exiting company facilities.

Making Sure the Hard Stuff is Done Right A Q&A with Chad Boudreaux, HII’s Chief Compliance Officer How is compliance different than ethics?

law. One program cannot be effective without the other.

People often get these terms confused, but the distinction shouldn’t matter much to our employees. Generally speaking, compliance is a rules-based concept that addresses certain types of business risks. Ethics is a values-based concept that helps to guide employee conduct in the absence of clear rules. HII has both a compliance program, headed by a chief compliance officer who works in the Law Department, and a Corporate ethics program, headed by the business conduct officer who works in Human Resources and Administration. The compliance program and the ethics program work hand-in-glove to focus on ethical conduct and compliance with the

If I’m an individual contributor, why should I care about compliance and the compliance program? The answer is the same for any employee as it is for our president and CEO: We are a company whose core values include integrity and honesty, and each of us committed to those values when we agreed to work here. It takes years of honest and hard work for a company to establish a good reputation, but it only takes one incident by one employee to ruin that reputation. Each employee should care about compliance because he or she will be held accountable for

NEW! Submit a Valid OFI for a Chance to Win a 55” Smart TV The shipyard’s Opportunity for Improvement (OFI) program is holding a new promotion Feb. 1-28. Two winners will be selected and each winner will receive a Smart TV or the cash equivalent ($1,000). For additional information about the promotion, view the flyer or visit the OFI Yardnet website. For questions, contact Woody Flythe (O09) at 380-2859 or Yasmine Robinson (O09) at 380-2428.

behaving with integrity and honesty and following the rules. Not too long ago, one of our welding inspectors was fired, arrested and is now in jail for falsifying inspection reports. More recently, the law required that we disclose to the government the names of those who may have knowingly mischarged their time. Many of those former employees are now prevented from working on any government contracts, and some have been prosecuted. The reasons for caring about compliance are many. We look forward to continuing our work to help every HII employee do the hard stuff “right.” Read the entire Q&A on Yardnet.

History Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) delivered the Essex-class carrier Franklin (CV 13) to the U.S. Navy on January 31, 1944. Franklin only took 14 months to construct from keel laying to delivery due to the pace of World War II wartime construction. Franklin was heavily damaged off the coast of Japan on March 19, 1945, but was able to return to the U.S. for repairs under her own power. Photo by NNS
