MINUTES MICHIGAN CITY COMMISSION ON THE SOCIAL STATUS OF AFRICAN AMERICAN MALES RESCHEDULED- THURSDAY- JANUARY 20, 2011 Commissioners Present: Commissioners Absent: Albertine Allen - Minority Health Coalition Rev. Charles Dowdell -Detroit (Funeral) Joan Ganschow -Corrections Marty Corley Gerry Jones -H.O.P.E. and Stepping Stone Willie Milsap- County Commissioner Faye Moore Common Council Liaison Lester Norvell- Community Corrections GUEST: None Arthur Payne, Jr. - Chairman SSAAM James “Jim” Stemmler - Retired -Trades & Unions Rodney Washington - Sheriff Department Rep. Phillip Wood - Probation Department CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at approximately 12:05 p.m. ROLL CALL: Commissioner Faye Moore called the roll - Minutes reflect attendance and absences. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Commissioner Payne asked for a motion to accept the minutes. Commissioner Gerry Jones made a motion to accept the minutes; Commissioner Joan Ganschow seconded the motion. Ayes carried the motion. Commissioner Payne thanked the secretary for taking the minutes.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Marty Corley absent - No Report OLD BUSINESS: None NEW BUSINESS: Everyone should have received letters that need to be reappointed. Please see the City Clerk - Faye Moore, Albertine Allen., Willie Milsap, Rev. Charles Dowdell, Rodney Washington, and Gerry Jones. Mayor’s appointments are every two years and Council appointments are every year. Faye Moore has resigned as the Mayor’s appointment due to the fact she is now 5th Ward Interim Councilwoman. February will be election of officers of the commission. Commission will accept nominations from the floor at the February 9th meeting and an adjustment will be made to the by-laws. Conflict of Interest Forms were passed out and most returned for the files. Today’s meeting will be a round the table discussion: Commissioner Stemmler felt we should spend more time on expungement and what can we do to help. Can we set-up one of our meetings in the High School Cafeteria and take questions from the students. Good suggestion and Senator Arnold and State Representative Scott Pelath both would like to attend one of our meetings for discussions on House Bills and other State Legislature. There was a ten -fifteen minute discussion on this topic. Commissioner Jones spoke on the Disparity issue that was being discussed at the inception of Social Status and what happened to the report. What happened to the Disparity Report? Arthur Payne will speak to Judge Alevizos and Judge Gettinger. Faye will see if Krista or Erika still have their notes and if they would be willing to come and give a report. There was a fifteen - twenty minute discussion on this topic and related topics. Tom Dermody was mentioned as a possible speaker. Commissioner Wood - Probation - Drug Court working toward Rehabilitation instead of incarceration. Next meeting - Wednesday- January 26, 2011 at 5:45 p.m. -Michigan City Court House. Victim Impact

Commissioner Stemmler - State Reps. Are concerned about our youth. Iron Workers have done some hiring and they send out applications every year the first two full weeks in January and start their apprentice training. Commissioner Rodney Washington - New Job- Michigan Township Trustee Office - deal with “Poor Relief” Residents must use their income wisely in order to qualify. Commissioner Washington gave a ten minute presentation on what his office is about. Michigan Township Office is a Nutrition Site- Hot Meal provided for anyone over age 60. Michigan Township Trustee- 2601 E. Michigan Blvd. -874-5202- You need to call the day before. Food comes from South Bend through Real Services. Commissioner Allen - Minority Health Coalition moved to Suite 109 - (Left of the Post Office ) Office hours are: Mon-Fri 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (most days) Open House will be held -February 21, 2011 from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Phone: 879-1712 Commissioner Gerry Jones- H.O.P.E. - Open for the Public to hold Events call: 874-4606 and leave a message, if no answer. STEPPING STONE- Starting a program with the Humane Society on Pet Abuse Saturday 1/22/11 at 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. will be an informational workshop. Commissioner Lester Norvelle - Community Corrections -Accepting applications for a New Director. Can apply at La Porte County Human Resources- Mr. Phil Dabaja - Interim Director Commissioner Willie Milsap - Passed out information on the “Right to Work” House Bill - SCOTT PELATH WILL BE AT 5TH WARD NEIGHBORHOOD OFFICE -SATURDAY -JAN. 29, 2011 AT 10:00 A.M. Union Workers providing a bus to Indianapolis on February 15, 2011 (219) 7626787. Commissioner Payne spoke on the need for the Home- School-Church to work together to better our community and educate our students. This is an Institutional thing. We need to get the leaders in the community to work toward motivating our youth and make them accountable. When we grew up we were accountable. As soon as they took punishment out of the home, things changed. There was a ten- fifteen minute discussion with good ideas.

Commissioner Faye Moore- Pentecostal Temple COGIC-2722 Wabash presenting a Black History Program on Sunday-February 27,2011. Troy Thompson - main speaker - reciting Martin Luther King, Jr. speech. -4:00 p.m. will be in the newspaper and on ALCO. Michigan City need to present more Black History Programs. Commissioner Ganschow - Commissioner Eddie Buss has moved to Florida and the New Department of Corrections Commissioner is Bruce Lemon. NAACP will be conducting training sessions at HOPE - Currently the classes are on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday at 9:00 a.m. -222 Mc Clelland (Old Park School). President Wes Scully can advise if there is still room. PUBLIC COMMENT - None PLEASE HAVE your friends and family members watch on ALCO. www.alco.org
