Many Thanks to the Volunteers! OFFICE HOURS: Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 4:30 pm

Taoist Tai Chi Society of Canada—Gimli Branch Lina Allegro As time goes by I'm reminded of how fragile our health can be and how important staying active is. There are many forms of physical movements. Tai Chi being one. All the major muscles are used in Tai Chi. Slow stretching alternating with full contraction of the muscles of both the lower back and abdomen is especially good for people with low back pain. It also has beneficial effects on the involuntary muscles of the digestive tract. Whatever your favourite activity is,,,,,, keep doing it and stay warm.

Message from the Prez ... Well, another year has come and gone. I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday season and I wish you good health and lots of happiness in Gord Page, the coming year. Now that the seaPresident son is coming to a close, what better time to get involved in the Centre! Marilyn’s Fit N’ Fun class will be starting again soon for those of us who had too much turkey. Most of the other activities will be starting within the next week or so. Check out our new “Chase the Ace” game starting on January 8th. There are more details of the game on the card page (next page over). Everyone is welcome to play and take their chances on winning the pot! Remember, be active, get involved, and stay healthy!

BUILDING & MAINTENANCE Everett Lloyd

By the time you read this, the janitor has probably waxed and polished the floors of the Centre. Snow removal is taken care of by Lawnscape Property Services. The large outdoor light for the parking lot has a new timer and bulb and seems to be working very well now. All seems well and set up for the new year to begin. I wonder what challenges will be in store for us in the coming months?

As the new Publicity Director for New Horizon 55+, I would like to send out a little message to all our Members and readers of the Hilites Newsletter. Season’s Greetings to all of our members which now number more than 450. If you are reading this note, it means that you enjoy reading about club activities and your fellow members. In the new year we would like to add more member content to the Hilites. This requires your input and participation….. Some ideas we’ve been working on for content: “What is Your Story?” We ask that you submit a brief article about your life and how you came to be a member of New Horizons, what activities you enjoy at the club etc. I will be approaching a few folks to get this started. “Hellos” A listing of members who have joined the club for the first time and invite them to share which activities they will be attending. “Goodbyes” A note when people leave the club due to a move to another community and maybe share their forwarding address if they wish to share that information. “What is on the New Horizon’s Bulletin Board ?” This would be a chronological listing of events within the community that are of interest to our membership and which are currently posted on the lobby bulletin board. “Member News” A forum where members can share exciting news in their lives - a new grandchild, a special vacation, a significant birthday or anniversary, etc. Please take a moment to give your feedback on these ideas to Chris Mulroy, our Hilites Editor, or myself. As well, we look forward to suggestions for other ideas to help make our monthly Hilites truly reach it’s full potential. Linda Cochrane 642-7436 or by E-Mail at: [email protected]

THURSDAY FLOOR CURLING Fred & Vera Ralke

Thursday Floor Curling will continue in the new year with a start date of January 9th. Hope to see you all there! Happy New Year Everyone!

SOCIAL COMMITTEE Lynne Magnusson

Happy New Year to everyone! May your 2014 be filled with good health, and peace and joy. This year’s Christmas Party, held on December 7th, 2013 was a great success. 151 guests and members were in attendance. The party was sold out approximately two weeks before the event. The Social Committee did a terrific job in decorating the hall with red poinsettias on every table. One lucky winner at each table took the poinsettia home. We also had two large poinsettias as door prizes. Jean Wiedmer and Lynne Wall were the lucky winners. Lee Rieck was the winner of the Liquor Card and poinsettia raffle.

It’s not all fun and games - someone has to do the dirty work!!

We dined on a delicious turkey dinner catered by Mandy Bergman of Mad Dash Catering. Following dinner we were entertained by Thistle. Thistle played Christmas music, dance music and some really good listening music! The evening ended with most everyone joining the band on stage to sing Christmas carols. Everyone had a great time! Our next event was the New Year’s Eve Gala. We had 89 guests in attendance and rang in the New Year with a very cold -35 degrees. We feasted on baron of beef dinner supplied by Mad Dash Catering. The dance floor was crowded all evening while everyone danced to the music of Prairie Crocus. The door prize winners of gift certificates for Brennivins and Whitecaps were Chuck Vincett and Don Hurak. The winner of the Liquor Card raffle was a member of the band. It was a really good party!! George Braun was caught showing off his moves dancing with Jackie Poloski!

Santa Dancing??

There was this guy at a bar, just looking at his drink. He stays like that for half of an hour.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson go camping, and pitch their tent under the stars. During the night, Holmes wakes his companion and says: "Watson, look up at the stars, and tell me what you deduce." Watson says: "I see millions of stars, and even if a few of those have planets, it's quite likely there are some planets like Earth, and if there are a few planets like Earth out there, there might also be life." Holmes replies: "Watson, you idiot. Somebody stole our tent."

Then, this big trouble-making truck driver steps next to him, takes the drink from the guy, and just drinks it all down. The poor man starts crying. The truck driver says, "Come on man, I was just joking. Here, I'll buy you another drink. I just can't stand to see a man cry." "No, it's not that. This day is the worst of my life. First, I fall asleep, and I go late to my office. My boss, outrageous, fires me. When I leave the building, to my car, I found out it was stolen. The police said that they can do nothing. I get a cab to return home, and when I leave it, I remember I left my wallet and credit cards there. The cab driver just drives away." "I go home, and when I get there, I find my wife in bed with the gardener. I leave home, and come to this bar. And just when I was thinking about putting an end to my life, you show up and drink my poison.

Two Wizards Two wizards in a car were driving along and the police were chasing them for speeding. One said, "What are we going to do?" The other replied, "Quick, turn the car into a side street."

SNOW PLOUGHING IN DUBLIN!

E

On a bitterly cold winter morning a husband and wife in Dublin were listening to the radio during breakfast. They heard the announcer say, "We are going to have 8 to 10 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the even-numbered side of the street, so the Snow ploughs can get through. "So the good wife went out and moved her car.

R

A week later while they are eating breakfast again, the radio announcer said, "We are expecting 10 to 12 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the odd-numbered side of the street, so the snow ploughs can get through. "The good wife went out and moved her car again. The next week they are again having breakfast, when the radio announcer says, "We are expecting 12 to 14 inches of snow today. You must park...." Then the electric power went out. The good wife was very upset, and with a worried look on her face she said, "I don't know what to do. Which side of the street do I need to park on so the snow ploughs can get through?" Then with the love and understanding in his voice that all men who are married exhibit, the husband replied, "Why don't you just leave the car in the garage this time.?"

The Christmas Horse Race Riding the favorite at Cheltenham, a jockey was well ahead of the field. Suddenly he was hit on the head by a turkey and a string of sausages. He managed to keep control of his mount and pulled back into the lead, only to be struck by a box of Christmas crackers, a can of spam and a dozen mince pies as he went over the last fence. With great skill he managed to steer the horse to the front of the field once more when, on the run in, he was struck on the head by a bottle of sherry and a Christmas pudding. Thus distracted, he managed only a second placing. He immediately went to the stewards to complain that he had been seriously hampered.

The New Boots

S I D E

An elderly couple, Margaret and Bert, moved to Texas. Bert always wanted a pair of authentic cowboy boots, so, seeing some on sale, he bought them and wore them home. Walking proudly, he sauntered into the kitchen and said to his wife, “Notice anything different about me?” Margaret looked him over. “Nope.” Frustrated, Bert stormed off into the bathroom, undressed and walked back into the kitchen completely naked except for the boots. Again he asked Margaret, a little louder this time, “Notice anything different NOW?” Margaret looked up and exclaimed, “Bert, what's different? It's hanging down today, it was hanging down yesterday, it'll be hanging down again tomorrow!” Furious, Bert yelled, “AND DO YOU KNOW WHY IT'S HANGING DOWN, MARGARET?” “Nope”, she replied.. “IT'S HANGING DOWN, BECAUSE IT'S LOOKING AT MY NEW BOOTS!!!!” Without changing her expression, Margaret replied, “Should’a bought a hat, Bert.”

JAMMERS Andy Smaha Hi Everyone! Another year has passed and we’re getting ready for the New Year to begin every Wednesday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Unfortunately it will be without our founder and mainstay, Chris Harder, who passed away last month. It won’t be the same without him at first but we’ll carry on and try to be what we were before he left us. He will always be remembered and still be with us at all our jamming sessions. I hope we will do him proud.

PETAL PUSHERS Sharon Peichl We are sooooo looking forward to the Spring!!!! I am going for ideas for plantings – will find them in Florida! Planning will start as soon as a hint of Spring springs! Meanwhile lets all hang in there and make the best of what's here. Friends to share the weather story! Happy New Year to All - Make this the year to join us Petal Pushers!!

Cha Cha is the dance of choice to bring in the New Year. Cha Cha has the distinction of being one of the most dominant "pop" rhythms of the last 40 to 50 years, becoming popular in 1954. It is characterized as having an upbeat, infectious rhythm, which creates a sense of playfulness. This dance can be done to any music with 4/4 time, including Ole Time Dance music. We begin Jan. 7th at 7:00PM. You don’t need to pre-register; just come to class for fun and exercise! Dancing with the Stars will start to practice their routines in late January/early February. We are looking at 8 hours of practice time with our stars (one hour/week). Confirmed to date are: Everett Lloyd, Peter Magnusson, Roger Newman, Marilyn Campbell, Ellen Paxton, Jackie Poloski, and Shelagh Russell. We are looking to confirm one more male dancer. We look forward to celebrating the 55 club’s 40th anniversary with these stars.

ACTIVITY UPDATE PEROGY MAKING Elaine Einarson Hello and greetings from the Perogies crew. What a wonderful couple of days. Eleven people showed up to do 150 lbs of potatoes. The prep work was completed in short order of about 2 hours or 20 volunteer hours. This goes to prove many hands make work light. Good job Mike and your group. Second day started with bad weather and a few phone calls cancelling with apologies. It is always nice to get that phone call so you aren't waiting for people to show up. One always panics a bit when this happens. However we had 31 people or 151.50 volunteer hours ,who weathered the storm and over 400 dozen Perogies were made and completed by 1:30p.m. The ball makers were singing, getting into the Xmas spirit. The dough lady did a fantastic job making dough starting at 7:00a.m. But when curling started could be found relaxing in front of the TV. Good job Mavis, many compliments on the dough!

They are like machines, a must see and compliments from the packing people that there were very few rejects. Now the rollers were kept very busy trying to keep up to the machines, the runners kept looking for flats for the pinchers. Coffee was served at 10:00 a.m. and as usual, Pauline did an excellent job with coffee and lunch. After coffee there was a bit of delay waiting for the water to boil. (You know the old saying a watched pot never boils) Once that happened the boiling got into full swing. Next the 2 gents in the cooling area were pretty cool doing their job. Good job boys! The packing people were kept very busy as well with Edie making the phone calls and collecting the cash. To the people who did dishes and clean up you did an excellent job. Overall the day went very well finishing at 1:30p.m. There will be NO Perogies in January. The next perogy day will be February 5, 2014. Also Perogies will sell for $3.50 a dozen. Sign up sheet will be on the bulletin board. My thanks to everyone who volunteers a few hours once a month for this worthwhile function. Also thank you for all who wore their own apron and took it home to be laundered.
