EDUCATION SPOTLIGHT JAS Summer Camps
The JAS In-Schools Summer Camp is back again this year to provide music education to Middle and High School students within the greater Roaring Fork Valley! The camp provides direct music instruction from professional musicians, including private lessons and group workshops as well as live performance elements. This year we are thrilled to be joined by longtime friend and Program Director, Chris Bank, as well as fellow faculty members Mark Johnson, Chris Rose, and Tim Fox. There are three remaining camp sessions available, all of which take place at the Roaring Fork High School in Carbondale: JAS Intermediate Camp (July 16-28, 10am-3pm): $400 JAS Beat Lab (August 6-10, 10am-1pm): $250 JAS Beginner’s Camp (August 13-15, 10am-3pm): $175 This is in addition to the already passed JAS Advanced Camp, where the attendees were joined by college music majors from Denver for two days, and also had the opportunity to perform at both the Glenwood Springs Summer of Music at Two Rivers Park and the Free Lawn Party at the JAS June Experience. The JAS Intermediate Camp group will get the opportunity to perform at the Carbondale Mountain Fair on Saturday, July 28 th at 1pm (Kids Stage by the pool). The JAS Beat Lab is an opportunity for small groups of students to compose, arrange, perform, and mix original music using the professional recording software Reason 8. The program is an applied education to introduce students to the concepts of computer-based music production in a studio environment while having them create the music that is being recorded. Please note: 1-2 years of beginning music experience is required & enrollment is limited to 12 students. Who says learning can’t be fun in the summertime? Come join us for one or more of our sessions and learn from some of the Roaring Fork Valley’s best. For more info, go to jazzas-
Sonic Showdown Highlights Taking the place of Band Battle this year was the first annual Sonic Showdown on Saturday, May 19th from 2-5 pm at The Temporary in Willits. The Sonic Showdown is a showcase for young musical talent from Aspen to Rifle that was presented by Jazz Aspen Snowmass and the Jake Foerster Music & Arts Fund. With 14 acts at the Showdown, we had a mix of rock, jazz, soloists, duos, a rapper and a DJ. Everyone did amazing but some of the performances really stood out: Spectacle — a rap artist named, Kyah, from Rifle Middle School really got the crowd going with his energy and creativity. Event Horizon — a DJ named Joseph, from Coal Ridge who showed a lot of originality, potential, and really got the crowd up and dancing. Coal Ridge Jazz Combo — the Coal Ridge High School Jazz Band that was so great JAS asked them to perform at the June Lawn Party where they were a huge hit! Vision AKA D&L—a singer/guitar duo from Aspen and Basalt that had the whole crowd mesmerized, they also played at the June Lawn Party. Band with No Name — a trio of Glenwood Springs High School students that performed amazing original pieces. Sleepy Justice — a rock band from Carbondale that CRUSHED IT with their great stage presence and a great front man. Sleepy Justice were asked to played at the JAS Crawfish Cruisers event in early June. In addition, the event silent auction brought in $4,843— all going to the JAS/JFMAF Scholarship fund which we hope will provide some of our talented participants with future scholarships!

Student Bands at the June Lawn Party The JAS June Experience took place on June 21-30 and one of our favorite parts was the FREE JAS Lawn Party at the Benedict Music Tent taking place July 22-24. What really made the lawn party special was the student bands that performed. With the help from JAS Summer Camps and the Sonic Showdown event, three student bands performed. Kicking off the weekend, on Friday night JAS Advanced Summer Camp Students were able to show off what they had worked on during their week and a half long session that ran June 18 - 27. (To learn more about the summer camps, please look at the article at the top of the first page.) On Sunday morning the band D&L, which consists of Dylan Hart and Luca Morrow-Yeager, took to the stage with a killer performance. These two students from a local high school are a singer/guitar duo that wowed the crowd with their performance at the Sonic Showdown this past May. The third student band, Coal Ridge High School Jazz Band, also performed on Sunday putting on a fabulous show. These kids wowed crowds at both the JAS Student Showcase in April and Sonic Showdown back in May. Vision aka D&L
