JCC Jazz Camp 9th Season Study jazz in a friendly, encouraging environment with professional jazz musicians from New York City. Daily schedule includes workshops, ensemble rehearsals, a performance forum and master classes. The camp runs Monday thru Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In our LISTENING LAB, the faculty presents the classic jazz recordings that form the foundation of a jazz learning experience. Students are taught to listen actively and make informed observations on what they hear. Students will also learn the basics of and participate in discussions ofjazz history, and will learn how that history relates to their own musical experience. RHYTHM WORKSHOP is designed to heighten students' awareness of rhythm and tempo. Students study rhythmic analysis, strengthen their understanding of basic jazz rhythms, and explore polyrhythms. All students will be given an opportunity to play drums in the workshop.

Sample Daily Schedule 11:00 a.m. 11:30 a.m. 12:45 p.m. 1:30 p.m. 2:30 p.m. 4:00 p.m.

In our MUSIC THEORY class, students reinforce a basic understanding of music theory, and learn how it applies to jazz improvisation. The class is taught in beginner and advanced levels. PERFORMANCE FORUM is a daily performance opportunity and mini-concert with a casual atmosphere. Combos are encouraged to perform every day, and the class also provides an opportunity for faculty to demonstrate through performances, for students to form ad-hoc ensembles, and for ad-hoc student-faculty groups to perform.

VINNIE SPERRAZZA, camp director Drummer Vinnie Sperrazza earned a degree in jazz studies from William Paterson University. While at WPU, he began a long-term musical relationship with the legendary pianist James Williams, which continued until Mr. Williams' passing in July 2004. Through the auspices of Mr. Williams, Vinnie performed in many memorable concerts and recordings with such individuals as Steve Wilson, Bill Mobley, Richard Davis, Mulgrew Miler, and Clark Terry. Since moving to Brooklyn in 2002, he has been an in-demand sideman, and has made a name for himself as a leader. The Matt Blostein/Vinnie Sperrazza Band has performed extensively in support of their album Ursa Minor, on Envoi Recordings. In April 2009, Fresh Sound Records released the first album by the Vinnie Sperrazza Trio, Peak Inn. As active an educator as he is a performer, Vinnie is the jazz program coordinator at both Queens College Center for Preparatory Studies in Music and the JCC Thurnauer School of Music. Vinnie is also a Midori and Friends Teaching Artist and has his own private teaching practice at his home in Brooklyn, N.Y. MATT BLOSTEIN, saxophone

Saxophonist Matt Blostein has toured with Maynard Ferguson and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and has performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival, The Kennedy Center, Ravinia Jazz Festival, and at the Thailand Cultural Center. He attended the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Mark Turner, Bob Mintzer and Dick Oatts. Matt is also currently on faculty at the Larchmont Music Academy, and co-leads a band with Vinnie Sperrazza. He also works frequently as a freelance music composer/producer for the media.
