JAZZ PIANO IMPROVERS TUNE LIST Welcome to the 2013/14 Jazz School UK Ensemble Programme!
Repertoire You will find your tune list below. This season the plan is to concentrate on absorbing this essential repertoire much more thoroughly, because learning tunes (preferably by ear) is the most important single thing you can do to improve your jazz skills, leaving scale practice and harmonic analysis squirming in the dust! Over the course of each day you will be swapping between two groups - one with just pianists and the other for all instruments (Gollum 1). We will be looking at two new tunes per meeting, and revising two others from the meeting before. We will also give out guide leadsheets in advance, to help you with your preparation. Remember that these leadsheets should not be trusted absolutely - they are only guides to particular versions of standards. Use them (ideally) as transcription aids rather than as definitive scores! Notice that one tune we do at every meeting will be in the same key (C concert). That marvellous player and teacher Nikki Iles gave me this idea - learning lots of things in the same key allows us to concentrate on sounds rather than on notes, and is a great way of strengthening our jazz hearing! How do you learn a tune by ear? Listen over and over again. Sing. Listen and sing, listen and sing. Now see what you can find on your instrument (learning to transfer what you can hear and sing onto your instrument is extremely important!) Play. Listen and play, listen and play. If you are reasonably happy so far, begin to write down what you are playing. At any point in this process you can turn to some very helpful software, either Transcribe, or (my own choice) Amazing Slow Downer. Above all, don’t get disheartened - transcription is very difficult to begin with, but gets much easier as you go on! (Please check our Spotify playlist for frequent updates to our listening recommendations) Syllabus The learning programme for all the Ensembles can be found in the syllabus file.
