EXAMINATION GUIDELINES FOR JUNIOR CERTIFICATE CIVIC, SOCIAL AND POLITICAL EDUCATION The Civic, Social and Political Education examination is a one-and-a-half-hour written examination which carries 80 marks (40%) out of the 200 marks that are available for the subject. The remaining 120 marks (60%) are awarded to the Report on the Action Project or the Course-Work Assessment Booklet, which is submitted prior to the written paper examination. It is a common level paper which means everybody does the same paper. There is no separate paper for Higher and Ordinary level like in other subjects.

The written paper normally focuses on issues that are current and topical so when you are preparing for the exam it is very important to keep up to date with the newspapers and the news on radio and television.

All the answers you give to the questions asked should show respect, tolerance and understanding of the rights of all other citizens. When answering the paper the following guide might be helpful:

Section 1

The first section of the paper contains Objective Questions (based on facts). These questions all require short answers. There are normally THREE or FOUR questions in this section. ALL questions must be answered. Questions tend to be as follows: •

True/False

Matching Pairs

• • • •

Multiple Choice Tick the Box

Identify the Photograph Fill in the Blanks

18 marks are awarded for answers in this section. Remember to do the ones you know first and then take a guess at the rest. 2

Tips:

You will find it really useful to put together a politics photograph gallery to help you to get to know the main politicians/leaders and the main buildings in Ireland and abroad. Practice these types of questions from the different papers provided here. Read the instructions in each question carefully.

Section 2

The second section of the paper contains Structured Questions (the questions have a number of parts). These questions begin with something to get you thinking, a stimulus (a cartoon, a newspaper headline/cutting, a photograph, a poster, a brochure, a graph, a table of statistics, a web page, a piece of text, an advertisement, etc.). There are FOUR questions in this section. You are required to do THREE questions. If you have the time, do all FOUR questions.

You will be asked some questions about the stimulus given, like any other comprehension test. Examine the stimulus carefully – some of the answers will be there in front of you. Then you will be asked some other questions about the issue(s) raised in the stimulus. These questions will ask you to come up with your own answers. 42 marks are awarded for answers in this section – that is 14 marks for each question. Tips:

These questions tend to be about topical issues. Watch/Listen to the news once a week to keep in touch with the current issues. Keep an eye on the newspaper stories for the same reason.

Prepare a list of different actions you could take about an issue. Here are a few to get you started: Poster campaign Public Meeting Protest March Write a Letter

 Lobby a Councillor/TD/Minister/MEP Sign a Petition

 Write to a Newspaper

Organise a Fundraiser Invite in a Speaker

 Carry out a Survey

Read all of the questions carefully before starting this section. There will be questions here about issues you have learned about in class. Number your answers clearly.

Double check who is taking the action in the question asked. Is it YOU? Your CSPE Class? You as a MINISTER? You as a member of the COMMUNITY COUNCIL? Don’t repeat the same action when answering. Use actions from the list you have prepared.

3

In order to make sure that your answer is very clear, you should use full sentences when writing your answers. You will see on the paper that there are usually a few lines given for you to answer the question being asked.

Section Three

This third section of the paper has the Essay-type question (long answer) in it. There are FOUR questions in this section. You are asked to do ONE question. 20 marks are awarded for this question. Each question usually has THREE parts to it. These questions all have a heading on them to give you a clue as to what the question will be about. However, you should read all the questions before deciding which one you will do. Tips:

Read all of the questions carefully before starting this section. There might be a question here about an Action Project you have done. Number your answer and each part of your answer clearly.

Each part of the question has marks awarded to it, the more marks awarded the more information and detail you should give in your answer. Some of the questions will have a very particular slant to them, you must answer the specific question asked.

Usually at least one question will ask for you to draw a particular poster with a slogan. Bring coloured pencils or markers with you, if you can, to do this question.

If there is a question that asks you to write a letter, be sure you put an address and date on the top and sign off at the end. Your answer must look like a letter. If you have a lot to say in this section, you can get more paper from the Superintendent for your answers.

Conclusion

Remember the written paper is only 40% of the total mark for CSPE. The other 60% goes for your Action Project Report or Course-Work Assessment Booklet. Be sure to give a lot of care and attention to whichever of these you are submitting.

The Civic, Social and Political Education examination is designed to celebrate citizenship and young people’s understanding of citizenship. It is an examination where you can give your opinion and show what you have learned in CSPE class. It is an examination where you can do very well if you complete all the sections and give some thought to your answers. Don’t rush your way through the paper!
