Manager Policy Development, and Public Affairs

General Job Definition: 

This is a key leadership role within The Chamber in Policy Development and Public Affairs. The incumbent will be expected to represent The Chamber at meetings and community events.



Responsible for preparation of policy statements and legislative positions.



Assist the CEO in maintaining and enhancing positive public relations between The Chamber of Commerce, business and all levels of government.



Provide leadership and management of communication mediums and processes at The Chamber



Acting as media spokesperson in the absence of the CEO



Working in collaboration with the board to lead Chamber Committees



Writing articles for internal publications including bi-monthly magazine, weekly e-newsletter, etc.



Writing other articles and correspondence as necessary



Representing Chamber interests at Regional, Provincial and National Meetings



Arranging and attending meetings with Government Officials to advance Chamber messaging



Acting as a lobbyist in accordance with Provincial Legislation

Key Job Responsibilities: Leadership: 

Assist the CEO in providing leadership within The Chamber.



Serve as a spokesperson for The Chamber to ensure positive public relations are maintained.



Responsible for establishing an annual strategic work plan to meet the goals and objectives as set by the Board and CEO.

 Attends Board Meetings and participates as a member of the Senior Management team. Policy Development: 

Through research and analysis, develop policy recommendations to the CEO and Board regarding issues of concern within the business community.



Prepare policy statements and news releases for distribution to the media and public then posting to The Chamber’s web site. Public Affairs: 

Manage communications from The Chamber to ensure strategic objectives are met and positive public relations are maintained.



Develop cohesive communications plans to communicate and promote Chamber objectives.



Serve as a contact for The Chamber of Commerce by building partnerships with all levels of government.



Develop partnerships with business in Greater Victoria, including both members and potential members.



Represents The Chamber at community events.



Monitor legislative activity and assist with the response by The Chamber on business related issues.



Monitor business activity in the community and work to achieve Chamber goals.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Bachelors degree in marketing, business or public relations.



5 years experience in communications.



5 years experience in public affairs/policy development.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

Knowledge of public policy process.



Demonstrated excellent communication skills.



Demonstrated leadership and team building skills.



Excellent writing skills.



Public Speaking skills.



Demonstrated comfort in media interviews – both broadcast and print

Special Requirements: 

Established relationships with the business or government community in Greater Victoria.



Established relationships with media community in Greater Victoria



Demonstrated ability to form partnerships and alliances in order to actively pursue policy objectives.

Compensation 

This is a senior position at The Chamber



Compensation is in the $45,000 – $55,000 range dependent on experience
