JOCHEN SCHMECKENBECHER/ Bariton Jochen Schmeckenbecher was raised in Hockenheim, Germany, and studied with Kurt Moll at the Musikhochschule Cologne and with Richard Cross in New York. After being a member of the ensemble at the Theater Hagen and at the Komische Oper Berlin he has been working as a freelance artist and is a regular guest at the international opera- and concert stages where he performs the important roles of his repertoire. At the beginning of the 2012/13 season he made his debuts at the Staatsoper München as Marquis de la Force/ Les Dialogues des Carmelites and at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden as Alberich/ Siegfried followed by a new production of Ariadne auf Naxos/ Musiklehrer at the Wiener Staatsoper. This role he has also sung at the Staatsoper Berlin, the Semperoper Dresden, the Scala di Milano, the Theater an der Wien and the Metropolitan Opera New York a.o. The year 2013 he started with great success as Alberich in the “Ring des Nibelungen” at the Oper Frankfurt and in concert with the RSB in the Philharmonie Berlin. Both cycles are published on CD and DVD. Afterwards he performed Peter in a new production of “Hänsel und Gretel” at the Palais Garnier in Paris and Kurwenal in a new production of “Tristan und Isolde” at the Wiener Staatsoper. The season 2013/14 contains a.o. Dr. Kolenaty/ Vec Makropulos and Kurwenal at the Bastille in Paris, Spielmann/ Königskinder in concert with the Hamburger Symphoniker and again Musiklehrer at the Wiener Staatsoper. Further plans include a.o. productions at the Liceu in Barcelona, the Garnier in Paris and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London as well as several projects at the Wiener Staatsoper to which he will have a close relationship over the next years. Further invitations led him for example as Amfortas/ Parsifal to the Oper Frankfurt and the Taetro Regio Torino, as Kurwenal to the Opera Lyon, as Dr. Kolenaty to the Salzburger Festspiele, as Don Pizarro/ Fidelio to the Semperoper Dresden, as 4 Villains/ Contes d’Hoffmann to the Volksoper Wien and as Faninal to the San Francisco Opera. At the Staatsoper Berlin he sang in the new productions of Parsifal/ Klingsor and Die Fledermaus/ Frank as well as Beckmesser/ Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Faninal, Papageno/ Zauberflöte and Biterolf/ Tannhäuser. After his role-debut as Wozzeck in Dortmund in 2004 he performed this role a.o. at the Liceu in Barcelona, the Teatro Real in Madrid and at the Staatsoper Hamburg. On the concert-stage he sang a.o. Cerha’s “Baal Gesänge” at the Konzerthaus Wien, Schubert’s “Alfonso und Estrella” with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Jesus/ Johannespassion in Madrid, songs from “Des Knaben Wunderhorn” in Bregenz and Mahler’s “8th Symphony” and Janacek’s “Glagolitic Mass” in Dallas. With the Gulbenkian Orchestra Lisbon and the Konzerthausorchester Berlin he sang concert performances of Elektra/ Orest.
