Joke Books by Kids “There are only 2 kinds of jokes: funny and not funny.” Tips from www.WriteByMyself.com When my brother was young, he liked to read joke books. He was always telling us funny jokes from “Good Clean Jokes” books. It was so silly that we all just cracked up! His jokes made the day more fun. Joke books are fun to read on a long trip, or when it’s rainy and you can’t go outside to play. Remember the fun things you like about your favorite joke books, and try to make your book fun too. Writing jokes is no laughing matter! It takes work to write any type of book, and a joke book is very specialized. So writing a joke book is recommended for ages 8 and older. You can make up jokes yourself, or you can write down jokes that you’ve heard from other people. Remember what we discussed in the Getting Started Guide about copyrights. Don’t use someone else’s work unless you get his or her permission. Try to think of jokes about everyday things you do. We suggest that you group your jokes together by topic. For example, all of the sports jokes are next to each other, and all of the animal jokes are together. Topics Suggested:  Vacation / holiday  Travel / trips  Animals (zoo / farm / pets)  Scary / horror  Family / friends  School / church  Silliness  Hopsital and medical  Neighborhood  Playground  Sports / hobbies Another way to write your joke book is to put similar types of jokes together. For example, all of your knock-knock jokes can go next to each other in a chapter called “Knock-knock Jokes”. Types of Jokes:  Aha! Jokes  Word play jokes  Riddles  Knock-knock jokes WriteByMyself.com

Before you write down a joke, you should “test it out” to see if other people think it’s funny. So tell your jokes to a few people. See if they laugh or smile. That’s how you know if your joke is really a joke! When writing your joke book, it’s great to be humorous. But remember you must still use good manners. There are some big words in our rules below, so be sure to have your parents help you read this. Rules 1. 2. 3.

for Jokes: Do not use profanity, vulgarity, racial slurs, or personal attacks Do not use jokes to harass other people or joke about tragedies Do not “put down” another culture. To make fun of an entire group of people, use a make-believe name that is not offensive.

All the rules can all be summed up with one simple saying, “Be polite!” If you want to make a point about a person, then make yourself the “butt” of the joke, instead of someone else. If you make jokes about other people, they may not get your humor. They may feel you are picking on them and it may hurt their feelings. Knock-knock. Who’s there? Lettuce. Lettuce who? Lettuce start writing our joke book! Ha ha. Get started thinking of funny jokes. Soon you will have an enjoyable book that everyone will want to read.
