Joshua Chamberlain is Born September 8, 1828 Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was born on September 8, 1828, in Brewer, Maine. He was the oldest of five children and worked on his father’s farm. He was educated at Bowdoin College and Bangor Theological Seminary. He then became a teacher at Bowdoin College. Chamberlain loved the military because of his family’s heritage of serving in the Aroostook War, the War of 1812, and the American Revolution. Joshua Chamberlain volunteered to serve in the Civil War and was made a lieutenant colonel in the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the Union Army. He served at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor. Chamberlain and his men were vital in the Battle of Gettysburg as they were the force that stopped the Confederate Army from taking Little Round Top. He was wounded during this battle, but continued to lead his men. For this he earned the nickname “Lion of Little Round Top.” Later, at the siege of Petersburg, Virginia, Chamberlain again led his men in battle, even though he was seriously wounded. In 1865, General Grant chose Chamberlain to lead the Union forces that accepted the formal surrender of the Confederate Army at Appomattox Courthouse on April 12, 1865. Chamberlain ordered his men to salute the Confederate Army as they marched by at the surrender, showing his admiration of their bravery and encouraging the remaining Confederate troops in the field to accept the peace terms. Chamberlain became governor of Maine after the Civil War. During his time as governor, capital punishment was abolished in Maine. He later served as president of Bowdoin College and president of a railroad construction company. He also wrote books, including The Passing of the Armies about the time he spent with the Union Army in the Civil War. Joshua Chamberlain died on February 24, 1914. His death was attributed to the wounds he received at the siege of Petersburg. This made him the last Civil War veteran to die of wounds received during the war. As you complete the copywork excerpt from The Passing of the Armies, think about the emotion of the moment when everyone on both sides knew the war was over. There did not need to be any more fighting. The men could finally go back to their homes, knowing each side had fought bravely.
