Journal of European Integration The Maastricht Treaty: Second Thoughts after 20 Years Special Issue on the Occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the Maastricht Treaty Editors: Thomas Christiansen and Simon Duke This special issue of the Journal of European Integration brings together contributions by leading scholars of European integration in order to reflect on the continuing significance and lasting impact of the Maastricht Treaty 20 years after its signing. Individual articles address the implications that key reforms introduced by the treaty have had: the creation of separate ‘pillars’ for foreign policy and justice and home affairs, the introduction of co-decision between Parliament and Council and of EU citizenship, the role of the European Council and of institutional reforms more generally. A number of contributions discuss the Maastricht decisions on Economic and Monetary Union and the management of the single currency in light of the current crisis facing the Eurozone. This collection of articles constitutes an authoritative and comprehensive assessment of the most important reform in the history of the European Union, making it essential reading for everyone interested in understanding the trajectory of European integration over the past two decades.
