"The purpose of this model is to facilitate the quick response from the communities who are likely to face the impact of hurricanes," said Anjaneyulu Yerramilli, director of JSU's Trent Lott Geospatial and Visualization Research Center. The National Weather Service predicts storms' paths using real time data. The JSU model takes a statistical approach using about 100 years' worth of historical data, including the previous paths of storms and the conditions that contributed to those storms, Yerramilli said.

The predicted path can be updated every two minutes, which is faster than models used by the National Weather Service, Yerramilli said.

The hurricane model developed at JSU also would be accessible on personal computers, he said. Emergency responders could download JSU's model and begin making preparations well in advance of a hurricane making landfall. The model is the brain child of visiting professor Venkata Dodla, a meteorologist and hurricane expert at JSU. Last year, he and Sudha Yerramilli, a GIS specialist and researcher at JSU's National Center for Biodefense Communications, began building the model by compiling 100 years' of data from Hancock, Jackson and Harrison counties.

On Monday, they compared their predicted path to the path predicted by national sources and showed them on a screen in the JSU e-Center's Visualization lab. The predicted paths were almost identical.

The researchers hope to receive funding to expand the hurricane model. "Unless we apply this thing to the communities, there is no meaning to predicting landfall," Sudha Yerramilli said.
