Juan Luis Guerra Named Grand Marshal
The Dominican Day Parade Will Celebrate Another Unforgettable Year: Honoring and Empowering Dominican Women
New York, N.Y. June 14, 2016. Today, the Dominican Day Parade, Inc. (DDP) named Juan Luis Guerra as the Grand Marshal who will lead a walk up Sixth Avenue honoring Dominican Women’s contributions to our communities on August 14 in Manhattan. Today's announcement is made in honor of The Mirabals Sister's Revolutionary Movement, "Agrupacion Politica," which took place 57 years ago on June 14. In their memory, we dedicate this year's theme, "Celebrating and Empowering Dominican Women," in honor of extraordinary women working in variety of fields including the arts, community service, technology and worker's unions. This includes La Madrina, Daisy Auger-Dominguez, Head of Global Diversity Staffing at Google, and the first time the parade honors a Dominican woman in a corporate leadership role at one of the world’s most valuable public companies. Furthermore, this historical moment in the parade’s trajectory is further punctuated by Juan Luis Guerra's first-ever participation in the march as the Gran Marshal. “Today’s world leaders recognize the importance of supporting the economic and political advancement of women and girls throughout the world,” said Angela Fernandez, Chair of the Dominican Day Parade Inc. “We are beyond grateful to have Juan Luis Guerra and Daisy Auger-Dominguez, both distinguished Dominican leaders, support our mission of celebrating Dominican women, who are the bedrock of our communities.” In July, the organization will reveal the remaining impressive roster of nearly 20 Dominican women top in their fields as well as other known Dominicans being honored in this year’s parade. The DDP board also wishes to highlight the accomplishment of its most important 2015 goal of providing scholarships to Dominican youth. For the first time the DDP distributed 17 scholarships to Dominican students, a tradition that will continue and expand in 2016. The organization’s board has also grown to include notable professionals of Dominican-American heritage.
