Chers lecteurs,

Bonne lecture

Dear Readers,

Spring suddenly arrived in Europe by mid-winter and sports are given pride of place in favorite leisure time activities. For some time now sports brands have become very noticeable on everyday items and therefore represent undeniable competition for brands that really come from textile or fashion. We focused on the position held by kid properties within the field of sports accessories, and indeed it is difficult to figure out whether they are technical and educational tools or pure pleasure toys. There again the properties that stand out come from the top list of favorite heroes. Children are devoted and continue to enjoy products sporting beloved characters. Junior City tops off the report with kids’ favorite athletes. Online stores dedicated to licensed products are sprouting up everywhere - definitely an international trend - that we reviewed. There still is some leeway but buyers will always consider pioneers as the most dynamic. Among our different reports and interviews you will have the pleasure of discovering or rediscovering the licensing strategies of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, émilie, Marvel’s heroes or Sophie la girafe that chose the Kazachok Licensing Forum to officially launch the brand’s international licensing program! Long life to Sophie and see you at the Halle Freyssinet! Enjoy your reading Nathalie Chouraqui - Joint Manager Avec et pour Sandra - with and for Sandra

Today, 45% of boys 7 to 14 years old spontaneously think of at least one athlete when they are asked to name their 3 favorite heroes.

Junior City’s analysis The expert’s view: Junior City – the specialist in children’s surveys and marketing – analyzes the success of athletes in the environment of kids’ heroes.

79% of 7-11 year-olds like to own items with their favorite characters on them

Lionel Messi winner of his 3rd consecutive Golden Ball (European Football Player of the Year) arrives in 3rd position of children 7 to 14 years old favorite heroes for all categories and spontaneous recognition*.

Children need to identify with strong personalities. Indeed heroes participate in building up their personality by an identification process. These heroes are plentiful (on average 7 to 11 year-olds each name at least 7 heroes) and come different environments depending on the child’s gender and age range. Among the environments that generate heroes we find the sports world, mostly of interest to boys. Advertisements starring athletes are all over: Jo Wilfried Tsonga, Tony Parker or Didier Drogba fall for Kinder bars, Sylvain Wiltord and Nicolas Anelka love Danette, Fabien Barthez used to sculpt his skull on a Big Mac, etc.

Why athletes? Children see strength as one of the main characteristics of a hero. Not only muscle strength but also the ability to be better than others. Athletes are winners and that represents success in the eyes of younger audiences. At age 7, the age of Manichean reason, children appreciate the fair-play aspect of sports and reject cheating. Furthermore sports have a strong influence on our societies: children play sports at school; sports provide them with a way of letting off steam and furthermore there are sports events on TV all the time. Leading sports events are exaggeratedly promoted and 2012 will be no exception: the Football Euro (European Kids’ favorite sport) and the London Olympics. * source Kids & Teens’ Mirror© terrain octobre 2011 source Kids & Teens’ Mirror© survey October 2011.

A new licensing development scope for Glénat Glénat has developed a number of vintage style guides for adults after its key properties: Mamette, Joe Bar Team, Lili, Les Pieds Nickelés and Bibi Fricotin. In 2001 artist Nob created Mamette, an adorable grandmother trying to make something out of the modern world. The 6th book is currently underway and the first 5 already sold 75,000 copies. Glénat developed a sweet and retro graphic charter that targets women. In a completely different style: Joe Bar Team targets motorcycle fans. Since 1990 there have been 7 comic books published that have sold more than 5.5 Million copies. Hachette is considering a possible collection of booklets about emblematic motorcycles between 1955 and 1995. In a more retro style Glénat has republished over the past 4 years a new version of the Adventures of Lili, a young mischievous girl whose stories first appeared in 1909 and were very successful in the 50s. 120,000 copies of the new edition have been sold up to date. The publisher also wants to develop pop style products that will be reminiscent of the 50s. Les Pieds Nickelés were also very successful after WW2. The property is back in the news with modern versions created by two new authors in 2011 and a film project being considered. The property targets mostly adult men. Finally, Bibi Fricotin, a hero that also appeared in the 50s is a more confidential property that has the advantage however of offering interesting development possibilities within a typically French environment. Last but not least: Lou and Tootuff, who should be making a triumphant comeback in 2013!

THE PROPERTY IS RECOGNIZED IN ENTERTAINMENT The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles‘ adventures were the subject of four films. In 1990, New Line Cinema launched the first live Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film followed by two other films in 1991 and 1993; with 20th Century Fox in charge of international distribution. Some 15 years later in 2007, a fourth film based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles property was released. TMNT, a Warner Bros. Pictures and Weinstein Company production was the first animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES ON TV • CBS was the first network to broadcast a miniseries in 1987: Teenage Mutants Ninja Turtles, then the mini-series became a series. • In France, it ran on France 3, then Canal+ and France 2, before returning to France 3 (and Canal J simultaneously). After more than 190 episodes, the series stopped in 1997. Two new series followed: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: the next mutation, a live series of 26 episodes produced by Saban. The series ran in the US on Fox Kids, and on TF1 in France. In 2003, a new 2D series arrived called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Fox Kids Network launched the series alongside a merchandising program.

DOFUS The series The Kerubim threat After the WAKFU series, Ankama Animations studios are developing DOFUS, The series: T h e K e r u b i m t h re a t . The adventure series is scheduled to run on France 3 in 2013.

This 2D series of 52x13’ will soon be on France 3. It targets children 6 to 12 years old, although it can also attract adults. It stands for such values as learning, respect, imagination and family. The series will be the continuation of online role play game DOFUS: each object in the series comes from the game and is the subject of an episode. While the game aimed the gamer community, the series is intended for the general public.

From video game to animation DOFUS is an online role-play game that had 2.5 Million active subscribers in 2011, with 14 classes of characters looking for 6 Dragon eggs that provide their owners with super powers. The environment was developed as comic books, animated series and other online games. The stories take place in different eras and different dimensions. There also are connections between the video game, TV, editorial products and comics that enrich the central script.

Press and Manga products The gamer community also has its dedicated magazine. Dofus Mag (132 pages) is published every two months to announce ANKAMA’s latest news. It includes data about all of ANKAMA’s productions: work in progress and game solutions, prepublication of comics and interviews of community members. The game’s world is also represented in Dofus Manga that showcases the adventures of Royal Guard Feca, Dark Vald or Bilby around the World of Twelve. By last spring Dofus had sold 1 Million Mangas. In April 2012 number 17 will be available in bookstores. The world of DOFUS will soon hit TV screens! R.L.

Kazachok: your catalog includes a number of novelties, could tell us more? Anoush Kevorkian: These novelties are fun to work on because they already have fans. The new Thundercats series began running on France 3 in March and will arrive on France 4 and Cartoon Network in July. Bandai is its Mastertoy. The first part of the two-part film The Hobbit - the Lord of the Rings’ prequel – will be released on 12/12/2012. We are developing that property for a double target. A number of licensees that develop Lord of the rings products will launch products after The Hobbit: Noble, Abysse Corp, Neka, etc. as far as children products the Mastertoy is Vivid and Lego will be launching a Lord of the Rings range for the summer of 2012 and a range for The Hobbit in December 2012. We will organize retail promotions and we will offer double promotions such as DVD/product. K.: What is your licensing strategy for DC Comics heroes? A.K.: With Batman The Dark Knight Rises in July 2012 and Superman Man of Steel for the summer of 2013, we ensure a yearly visibility in the Top 5 of most expected films. For each of these heroes we will develop a double strategy with collector products and children products. We want to market products with strong added value. promotionnelles sont prévues. A.K. A.K.

rentes cibles : garçons, filles, ados, fans, adultes… K . : Q u e l le s p ro p r i é t é s externes gérez-vous ? A.K.

visibility partnerships. We have a new partner for comics: Urban Comics (Dargaud). For the release of Batman we have already devised a number of promopromo tional showcases. The Superman film directed by Zack Snyder will include action scenes and vehicles so we will be able to develop a range of toys. We already have 3 important partners: Mattel, Lego and Rubie’s. Furthermore the 3D series Green Lantern will air on TV in September 2012. K.: How do you maintain the success of your perennial properties? A.K.: By consistently creating new contents, setting up strong licensing partnerships and conducting activation plans. Furthermore we keep our characters in synch with the era by conducting promotions in fast food chains, and creating apps, video games and more. Scooby-Doo will have increased visibility on France 3 with 5’ broadcasts. The character will be present during Easter and the summer in Parisian airports via a magazine offered to children. Finally a musical will premiere at the Folies Bergères Theater on October 27th and will run until Christmas before going on tour starting January 2013. We also signed a deal with Giochi Preziosi to launch Tom & Jerry toys by the end of 2012.And Meccano and Lansay will launch new Looney Tunes products this year. K.: What is your global licensing strategy? A.K.: We have 5 or 6 graphic charters for each of our properties so as to segment the offering and reach different targets. Our graphic studio in London is very active and it can even conceive products. We have also been listening to the expectations of specialized chain stores. Specialized outlets seem to be seen as showcases again. Therefore we have developed special offerings for them that target specific buyers and attract them to the stores. K.: What outside properties do you handle? A.K.: We focus on our own properties but we also handle UEFA. 2012 will be a big football year and we set up partnerships like Sun City for instance. For that property we used the same methods as we use for our own properties by developing graphic charters for different targets. For example for kids we rely on identification and for adults we rely on the different countries and the years when they won the cup.

DTR’s new boundaries! DTR (Direct To Retail) is a business model that has existed for about 10 years now. Brands and chain stores have explored its multiple alternatives that enable properties to get established in new territories and allow chain stores to discover new trades. We evaluated DTR’s patterns and issues for you, before having a look at the new possibilities it suggests!

Primary strategic goals « We signed our first licensing deal with Carrefour in 2002 and it has been renewed without fail ever since, which proves the satisfaction of both partners» noted Ms. Isabelle Lahoud, Disney France’s Director of Consumer Products. At the time what were the strategic motives behind those initial deals? Ms. Lahoud continued: «we had identified a big development potential with Carrefour: the chain store wasn’t into licensing very much and Disney was understated. A direct licensing deal meant gaining market shares and visibility. The same way that our DTR deal signed with Kiabi 4 years ago enabled Disney to develop very satisfactorily there. » Mr. Laurent Taieb from Nickelodeon Consumer Products analyzes this first phase as the moment when the main chain stores were looking for ways to maximize their profit margins and control their collections by integrating part of their product offerings. It was an opportunity for properties to enhance their indexation and visibility yet retain their pool of licensee manufacturers. For chain stores that solely focus on their own brands, DTR deals are the only access that remains for licensing. Chains like Zara, H&M or Benetton don’t have suppliers when they design their collections. Isabelle Lahoud explained how Disney was a pioneer in the field by identifying the potential these distribution circuits represented and then developing direct partnerships with most of them.

New DTR options After that first generation of DTR deals, chain stores and brands induced an evolution: Direct deals initially involving mass-market outlets were found suitable for more specialized distribution circuits (textile specialists, home) and then went

up market with textile chains that were positioned as medium to high quality and even sometimes the luxury market. That’s when the expression ‘capsule collection’ appeared to signify the ephemeral dimension of these limited editions, like for instance such collections as Pink Panther for Women’s Secret (by CLPG in Spain), SpongeBob for Pull In or Jean Charles de Castelbajac (Nickelodeon Consumer Products), Mickey Mouse for IKKS, etc. Soon the idea was to look for different targets notwith-standing enhancing the image. That’s how Disney broke a deal with Galeries Lafayette to launch a night collection - available since the end of 2011 – as well as a range of T-shirts for next spring/

summer. Mr. Laurent Taieb feels that looking for good style affinity with the chain store is an essential axis to develop the property’s positioning long term. Existing deals with chains of big box stores progressively extended to new categories. Thus food and hygiene & beauty are now covered by such partnerships as the Système U ranges under Warner license or Carrefour with Disney. Following the idea of enlarging the number of sales circuits open to licensing, discount chain stores were also approached, for instance Zeeman offers buyers a large assortment of children’s licensed products. However all segments are not suitable for DTR. The toy market proved more difficult because product development requires important investments and heavy marketing, which are difficult for a single chain store to ensure. There a few noteworthy exceptions such as the Nemo range at Carrefour, or Strawberry Shortcake that appeared in US and Canadian Toys’R’US outlets in 2011 and will be extended to other territories beginning this year.

Key factors of success for the future These examples are a good illustration of the first key factor of success for a DTR deal: a real engagement binding two firms that have a common strategy. Ms. Marina Narishkin told us that the chain store must fulfill its part as licensee: develop the products, put them on the market and ensure they come to fruition. Therefore it’s best to turn down a deal than taking the risk of not doing a proper job. And Mr. Laurent Taieb insisted on the importance of evaluating the global financial benefits of deals, including all the resources that the rights owner can make available. All of the people we interviewed agreed on one point: how vital it is to make sure the long-term relationship with licensee manufacturers is satisfactory. Disney feels that: the combination of DTR deals and traditional contracts is a sure way of encompassing the entire market. As far as Nickelodeon Consumer Products: manufacturers really have a true expertise and they accompany brands on a long-term basis.

area. « Big box food stores have increasingly cold feet, he continued. If the property doesn’t rank among the top 3, it’s difficult to get it in the store». The traditional distribution circuit of sports stores is not into taking risks either. Sébastien Mérit from Paca Import came to a similar conclusion: « for the time being we aren’t developing any licensed properties anymore, he offered. The prices are too high for us, and the royalties as well. Licensed bicycles did very well for a number of years, and then came loads of products that were probably not of a satisfactory quality level. Part of buyers then turned towards more legitimate brands or chain stores».

A two-level market While it’s important not to jump to conclusions after analyzing only a single market segment, it seems unquestionable that sports and leisure licensed products underwent considerable changes these last years. There are multiple reasons, one of which evidently was the economic crisis. Some professionals don’t hesitate to put forward the rarity or even absence o f f i g u re s that might enthuse adults and children. This analysis mirrors the lack of dynamics in the sports field and as a result in the licensing field. Alexandra Brette, in charge of Espas’ collections, felt that the current trend should be influencing the market on the long run. « Licensing was long the ideal link between sports and younger targets. It continues to do the trick as long as the property is sufficiently established and most of all that the child not be older than 6 to 8 y.o. Above that age, children and parents alike prefer the guaranty given by a sports brand, or a specialized distributor. Furthermore, the difference between outdoors sports and being minimal, it complicates choices in terms of distribution and merchandising. In which section should Babar scooters be sold? Buyers’ demands are relevant. It’s up to us to offer the best possible answers. ». Stéphane Fillastre, GM of retail Europe at Warner Bros. Consumer Products, and also head of UEFA sees this two-level market differently. « Ignoring the crisis would be inconsequent. However, licensing isn’t going to disappear as a result. Notwithstanding they need to adapt and fast. Real economic boosters must be found. Powerful groups are the only ones who have the potential to succeed this kind of kind approach, either with revamped perennial properties or with novel signatures ».

The need for innovation At Espas, Alexandra Brette underlined the impact that 2012 sports events such as the Olympic games will have to boost the > Pop-up «Equipe de France» (ESPAS)

category. This specialized company is working with the French Football Federation or athlete Christine Arron. « While festivities have always boosted sales, during a period of crisis they become unavoidable moments. More and more we see a concentration of sales volumes over short periods.» For UEFA, Stéphane Fillastre set up a strategy based on geomarketing, by dividing the desidesi red targets in two. On the one hand the target of host countries, Poland and Ukrainia, on the other hand the other territories. « It’s a first for Poland and Ukrainia who are very proud to be hosting the Euro 2012, he explained. These markets represent 50 to 75% of the global sales we expect. For them we went for classics such as sports shirts, caps and balls. To the contrary for the other countries we will have a more vintage offering with revamped graphics.» Philippe Alessandri, the president of TéléImages Kids, felt that innovation would also come from new programs such as Bask’Up. « Parents feel reassured by the flawless heroes of these series – such as Tag in Street Football – and kids will discover how much fun a sport can be, including all the friendship and solidarity values that can be developed through these collective moments. A long way away from the scandals tarnishing the image of some athletes.» Girls haven’t been overseen. A new series called The > Babar ball (ESPAS) > ESPAS works with the athlete Christine Arron.

3 questions for Hubert Taieb Joint GM of TF1 Entreprises in charge of TF1 Licences

K: After the Rugby World Cup how do you feel the All Blacks property performed? H.T.: We were able to anticipate by exploiting the property during 2 years before. We signed 12 contracts and largely surpassed our goals, particularly in the textile and luggage categories, which encourages us to look for other such properties. But competition is fierce. K.: How are older licenses such as Ushuaïa doing? H.T.: Ushuaïa’s success hasn’t subsided. The brand’s dynamics are continually renewed by the arrival of new products, for instance in the hygiene & beauty category. We work with some 20 licensees including Royer for trek shoes, Spel for equipment goods, and SMB for sports watches. K.: What are the other properties you develop for sports and leisure? H.T.: We have the luck of exploiting a very rich catalogue, which enables us to attract large targets ranging from very young children to adults. For instance Barbapapa - more than 120 licensees – saw its sales volume multiplied by 25 over 8 years. Following the success known in some European countries, we continue to develop the brand abroad. We also handle the brand Compagnie de Californie

pays hôtes, Pologne e t U k ra i n e , d e l’autre celles des a u t re s p a y s . MARIE RICHEZ

Ranch will air on TV during Fall 2012, and the first licenlicen sed products are scheduled for 2013. As far as Street Football, its success hasn’t subsided. A new series is scheduled for 2014, just before the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The sports market remains stable Although the analysis of the sports market doesn’t give a very precise picture of the weight licensing represents within it, it does offer quite an acute vision of the segment’s dynamics. The last known figures published in France by the FPS (Professional Federation of sports and leisure companies) highlighted a stagnation of global sales returns for 2010 - and the third year running - that verged on 9 Billion €, displaying the lack of purchase dynamics. The average price of a sports article continues to recede, in relatively stable proportions. Apparel and shoes (+2%) are the categories that are doing the least badly while sports items tend to decrease (-3.5% for bicycles for example). As far as distribution circuits are concerned, specialized outlets (Décathlon, Intersport, Go Sport) dominate the category with a sales volume of 7.2 Billion € (+1%), whereas nonspecialized outlets (big box food stores, clothes stores, etc.) suffer a decrease of 2.5% at 1.9 Billion € in sales.

Interview of Stéphanie Arnaud DeLiSo’s Marketing & Operations Director After obtaining a degree in Marketing, Stéphanie Arnaud began her career at Ampafrance working on baby brand Bébé Confort. Then she joined VULLI in 2003. She was recently appointed Director of Marketing and Operations at DeLiSo.

maman nostalgique (cadeaux, collector). S.A.

Kazachok: Could you explain the activities of DeLiSo/Vulli to our readers ? Stéphanie Arnaud: VULLI is a company that was created in 1945. It specializes in manufacturing toys and baby care products. Amongst other products it makes the Magic Tree and Sophie la Girafe. VULLI was able to capitalize on the success of Sophie La Girafe by developing over 150 products after the hit toy. It represents 21.8 Million Euros in sales for 2011. DeLiSo is a company that was created in July 2011 to handle Sophie La Girafe’s licensing. VULLI remains in charge of distributing Sophie La Girafe collections while DeLiSo manages the property’s development. K.: What is your licensing strategy for Sophie La Girafe? S.A.: First of all we created a graphic environment for Sophie La Girafe with attitudes, new friends, a place to live and a story. Our goal is to develop the property with baby products. It’s a strong property that is associated with birth. Our strategy is to launch the property, which we will be officially doing during the Kazachok Forum! Among our partners are Renolux (baby-care), Janod (small bedroom decorations and wooden toys), Mayo Parasol (baby bath apparel). We want to develop the property in publishing, textile, a line of luggage, room decoration, tableware, paper items, hygiene and products for nostalgic moms. K.: What about the international development? S.A.: Since 2006 we have enjoyed major international success. Sophie La Girafe is available in more than 52 territories. It’s THE classic baby’s toy across the world!

Carmen Ariza Managing Director de Carmen Ariza Licensing

Interview of Carmen Ariza Managing Director of Carmen Ariza Licensing

Kazachok Licensing Mag’ Avril - Mai 12

Kazachok: How is the agency Carmen Ariza Licensing structured? Rosa Tévar: We are a small but highly active agency. Our spirit has always been to remain a modest size but with highly trained professionals who enable us to manage our clients’ accounts with maximum efficiency, flexibility and personalised service. We are all salespeople and creative minds. We all endeavour to maximise business for our clients (licensors and licensees), find solutions for all situations and detect deals wherever they may appear. K.: What is the agency’s strategy? C.A.: Our strategy has always been based on service. Our licensees and licensors know that we are always there to safeguard and look out for their interests. Both figures are key to this market: the properties need the licensees and the licensees need the properties. And we are the ‘cherubs’ who ensure they fall in love and remain that way for many years. A long and prosperous love story in which everyone is happy. On the other hand, our international spirit and vision has also proven to be a great asset – both for detecting new properties and for taking them to where the business is.

K.: What kinds of rights do you manage? C.A.: We specialise in non-obvious properties; properties that are somehow different, be that because of their origins, their design, their concept, their development, their staging or something else. We mainly manage Japanese and North American properties. We never forget that ‘original’ and ‘different’ can generate new opportunities which, if you know how to recognise them, can make properties stand out from the competition. K.: What’s new for 2013? C.A.: The market changes quickly and you have to find new opportunities every day. We are constantly incorporating new properties that aim to satisfy our clients’ needs and help them stand out from the competition, opening new channels of communication and business for their current and potential target audiences. We can’t say exactly what our new properties will be. We are in constant motion, both physically and mentally. We are literally ‘moved’ by our clients: they give us the fuel that sets us going each day.

Products of high class, well-proven Marvel licensees are already in the pipeline, including items by Hasbro and Leomil. In addition, Walt Disney has successfully signed new great partners for Marvel licenses, e.g. Lego, Simba-Dickie, Herding (home textiles), VanDillen-Asiatex (home and fashion textiles) and many more.

Connected Kids

>

Children of today, who have grown up with the internet available all around them on countless different devices, have been naturally among the most enthusiastic early adopters of cross platform content. This desire to extend their brand experience and interact with muchloved worlds and characters online has presented producers and broadcasters with both an opportunity and a challenge. Those that succeed in creatively engaging young viewers’ attention via the web, however, can benefit from a significantly greater degree of brand exposure and loyalty that feeds back into great TV ratings. In the UK, children’s channels CBBC and CBeebies were among the first to explore the multiplatform path, developing a CBBC version of the iPlayer and creating online games and the possibility for interacting with live television. For example, viewers last year were able to send messages through in real time to the nature show Live ‘n’ Deadly, which were fed across the screen. The initiative attracted thousands of visitors, while the Saturday morning broadcasts of the show gathered on average 132 100 children 4-15 for an 8.8% market

share from September- December 2011. Since 2007, the Dutch kids’ soap Spangas has also been leading the way when in terms of cross platform content, taking a realistic look at the lives of ten teenagers. Web was integral to the project from the start, with each character keeping their profile and diary updated and viewers able to interact and ask questions directly. Videos are also uploaded in which the characters comment on the show or ask for advice. This strategy, backed up further by a magazine, books and a film, has kept the show as one of the most popular in the Netherlands since its launch, with its 7pm slot pulling in on average 116 100 viewers 6-12 for a fantastic 32.7% market share, again from September – December 2011. Broadcasters in France, although not among the first to create such

56

initiatives, are making up for lost time. TFOU, the children’s brand of the leading generalist channel TF1, launched itself into the fray last year with TFOU Pitch, an open call for ideas for an original transmedia event game based on TV, internet and one other media support. The chosen project, Défis TFOU, sees families auditioning via video to take part in a series of sporting tests to try to win a holiday, across nine episodes aired from mid-February 2012. From a TV point of view, the most successful of these ventures all share a strong link back to linear consumption, drawing viewers to the brand and enriching the viewing experience. In this way, TV and web work together in symbiosis, each strengthening the other, with the small screen remaining clearly at the heart of children’s media life. Extreme Zombies a growing graphic brand

Updated graphic brand Extreme Zombies offers an alternative to the typical scary zombies we are used to, bringing them into the 21st century as funny, trendy, sporty heroes of the night who are into all kinds of extreme sports.

>

Originally launched a decade ago, Extreme Zombies is a team of 5 strange and funny zombies. Zak is the leader and sees himself as the “King of Cool”. Dex is the joker of the group and is often brought to bear on the bizarre predicaments in which they often find themselves. Mondo is the bravest of the group. To finish, Stinger and Sparks are maybe the craziest of the group. However, despite their appearance, those zombies created by MGL do not use gratuitous violence they daily aim is to just have some “seriously extreme fun”.

An extended target With edgy new graphics for 2012 and a selection of fab new international partners, Extreme Zombies can seduce the challenging 8+ boys market. In addition, there is updated gothic collection and a new spray-paint urban art treatment that caters for the older teenage market, and surprisingly its strong reference to Extreme Sports has also grabbed the attention of young girls. Indeed extreme sports have become one of the

most watched and participated activities in the world. Due to this popularity, children are now demanding more from a character that they can relate to and which reflects the hard edged, cool image that extreme sports create. This is a great time for Zombies as the theme is everywhere, every newspaper, every game. With Hollywood green lighting anything vaguely fleshless there is plenty in development or even in the can. Brad Pitt starring in World War Z, ‘Boy Scouts Vs Zombies’, ‘Zombies Vs Robots’ and even ‘Pride & Prejudice And Zombies!’ 24/7 Wall Street estimates that the today’s zombie genre economy is worth billions of dollars. Not only with Halloween, but Zombies

The collection of highly detailed images has been licensed to a multitude of international manufacturers and publishers covering a wide range of products. The Extreme Zombies first appeared on products such as skateboards, wakeboards and water-skis as well as a range of fashionable apparel. Three distinct styles of artwork are available to licensees. The in-house design facility at MGL Licensing is available to licensees, to assist in the application of artwork to licensed product or packaging. With Extreme Zombies now available in C&A throughout Europe, a video game accessories deal and other leading partners, the brand is set to grow substantially in 2012. A real Zombie Revolution! C.R.

Simon

Philips President of Marvel Entertainment International

Simon Philips started his licensing career in 1991 in London working on behalf of the British Olympic Association. In 1996, Simon left the United States in order to establish LDI, a licensing and merchandising company whose reach would span the Middle East and Mediterranean Basin. He then served as the managing director of 4Kids Entertainment International before joining Marvel. As President of Marvel Entertainment International, Simon Philips is responsible for targeting new businesses, growing and increasing penetration of Marvel’s existing businesses in developed markets such as Western Europe and Japan, and leading the development of business and operations in emerging markets, including India, China, Russia, South Korea and Latin America. Simon also has direct responsibility for Marvel’s global consumer products, theme parks and interactive licensing initiatives.

Kazachok: Can you present us your activity? Simon Philips: Marvel is one of the most internationally recognized and respected entertainment brands with its library of more than 8,000 characters that include some of the most iconic Super Heroes such as Iron Man, Spider-Man, the Hulk, Captain America, Thor and Wolverine. Our characters connect with audiences across the world regardless of age and background. The enduring success and popularity of Marvel is due to the unique style and approach Marvel takes to its storytelling. Stories are action-packed, often unpredictable, and yet include strong elements. K.: What are your strongest properties? S.P.: There are many, but some of the characters that are enjoying strong profiles at the moment are Iron Man, Spider Man and The Avengers. The Iron Man movies have performed well at box offices bringing in $225 in EMEA territories alone, and the consumer products have proved successful. Spider Man has also performed well at theatrical box offices with the three movies bringing in $675 across EMEA, and whilst there has not been a movie since 2007, the merchandise remains popular and we envisage that this is set to continue with the release of The Amazing Spider Man this summer. Whilst The Avengers is a new property in terms of a movie, the core heroes and the main villain character have all featured in recent

Marvel movies, and bringing them together in the one film is likely to proper The Avengers into becoming one of our strongest properties yet. K.: What will happen in 2012 and 2013? S.P.: In 2012 Marvel will be releasing two highly anticipated movies. On the 25th April, Marvel fans around the world will witness the Super Hero team-up of a lifetime when Thor, Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk and Captain America join forces with Nick Fury from S.H.I.E.L.D to help avert a disaster threatening the world in The Avengers, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Disney. Directed by Joss Whedon, produced by Kevin Feige and starring an A-list Hollywood cast in Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson to name but a few, The Avengers will be the movie event of the summer. Then, in July, one of the most famous super heroes will return to theatres in The Amazing Spider Man from Sony studios. This will also be the first Spider Man movie in 3D. Throughout 2012 our licensees will be making exciting and new consumer products available to support the release of both films that will appeal to all ages from boys to adults. For example, a new range of apparel, stationary and costume will join the successful range of Marvel products already available, and when a c t i o n f i g u re s

from Hasbro and Lego were unveiled at recent European Toy Fairs they immediately generated a buzz of excitement. There will be a new animated series of The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes on Disney XD, and previous series will be launched on DVD prior to the movie launch. There will be new magazines and sticker-books. In 2013, we will be expanding The Avengers franchise with Iron Man 3 and Thor 2, ensuring that the Marvel experience continues for all to enjoy. K.: How did the merger with Disney change Marvel’s licensing strategy? S.P.: When Marvel became part of The Walt Disney Company in 2009, it was a very seamless transition with very little affect on how we implemented our licensing strategy. Many of the licensees we previously worked with such as Hasbro were already working with Disney, and so these relationships have continued with the strategy being driven by the specific needs of the brands and audiences and not Marvel or Disney themselves. In fact, becoming part of The Walt Disney Company has been a great benefit to our EMEA licensing model with Disney’s cross-category and integrated approach to licensed products and retail. I think it is also important to add, that Marvel and Disney were a very natural fit. While both share a focus on creativity, storytelling and innovation, both exist as separate brands and experiences for fans and consumers alike. Kazachok Licensing Mag’ Avril - Mai 12

Ryuji Kochi General Manager of Toei Animation Europe Kochi-San began in Toei Animation Japan in 2000, at the International sales department in Licensing. In 2003, he became Manager of the Toei Animation office in Hong Kong, handling 8 countries from China to India. The office was in charge of TV sales and merchandising rights. And in 2009, he arrived in the European office of Toei Animation, based in Paris.

K . : W h a t a re yo u r m a i n properties? R . K . : To e i A n i m a t i o n ’s strongest titles in the world are One Piece, Pretty Cure, Dragon Ball (celebrating its 25th anniversary in France in 2013), Sailor Moon and Saint Seiya. In Europe, our priorities are One Piece and Dragon Ball. One Piece already has 60

series, that will be presented during the MIPTV this spring.

©Masami Kurumada/Shueisha, Toei Animation

K.: How did your activity evolve? R.K.: About 2 years ago, we decided to work more deeply and more directly in our territories. To do so, we increased our sales and marketing people and we took back the direct management of some of our properties, like for example One Piece in France. This way, it is easier for us to understand the needs of the licensees and to meet those needs. In addition, in order to give strength to our office, we increase our corporate communication as well as brands communication. In the other European countries, we handle most of the TV sales directly but we appoint licensing agents for Merchandising. For France, we are now handling all rights directly and we will see according to upcoming years what will be our strategy.

more than 530 episodes, 10 movies, and the studio in Japan keep on producing content. It is a real phenomenon in Japan, where it is bigger than Hello Kitty. In France, the manga One Piece was launched in 2000 by Glénat. More than 8 million of books have now been sold and One Piece was the best seller manga in 2011 with 1.6 million units sold*! The animated series is airing in France on MCM and Direct Star, in Italy on Italia 1, in Germany on Viva and in Spain on Boing. When 6 to 25 year olds are asked to say the name of 5 manga characters, One Piece protagonists take the third place after Naruto and Dragon Ball. The pirates score has therefore more than tripled among 6 to 12 years old in only 9 months.** Dragon Ball counts 3 different series: Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT and a total of 508 episodes. At the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Dragon Ball Z in Japan, a new series has been produced in 2009: Dragon Ball Z Kai. This is a revised and remastered high definition version of the series with a faster tempo and more faithfull to the manga. In France, the Dragon Ball Z Kai episodes are broadcasted on Game One and Nickelodeon. And we just announced a new Saint Seyia ©Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha, Toei Animation

Kazachok: What is the role of this office? Ryuji Kochi: The Toei Animation European office was created in 2004. At first, this office only took care directly of the TV distribution and the licensing activities were handled by agents in each European territory. But year after year, we increased our activities, particularly with the licensing rights. As mentioned, we used to have licensing agents, but now we try to work more directly with the licensees. This office now has a team of 16 people.

K.: Have you noticed differences between the territories? R.K.: Yes, for example some countries like “original” version of the titles whereas some rather prefer new edited version, such as the Dragon Ball Z Kai series I just mentioned. And some territories are very difficult to enter, like the US and the UK. For example, we decided to open an office in Los Angeles to go deeper inside the US market. There also can be differences of targets. For example, in France, One Piece is for young boys whereas in Japan it is becoming a family program. Important brands such as Nissan or Pizza Hut have chosen this character for their communication, and fleeting restaurants have been open for all the family.

K.: What will be your next priority in Europe? R.K.: We would like to bring Pretty Cure to European countries. In Japan, it is a real success among girls from 4 to 6 years old. The animated series has been created 10 years ago, with new episodes every year, and there are also movies produced every year. We think this property could also seduce young girls in Europe. K.: Are you planning to become an agent? R.K.: Yes, this is an evolution we would like to make, because we know how to do the job of agent and we obviously understand the licensors’ needs, which is a big asset. But we would like to take good care of each property, so our aim is not to handle too many properties. * Source : GFK January - December 2011 ** Source : Junior City study – January 2012

Online stores > a new showcase

for licenses !

For a long time, customers who wished to buy toys, DVDs, books and other accessories with their favorite licenses had to look for them traditional shops, that didn’t always have these products. There weren’t either any dedicated place for these products. Some companies decided then to enable the fans to find and purchase those products online, using Internet and its numerous possibilities. Here are a few examples of companies who decided to go online!

sonicmerchandise.com Isabel Neal-Hooke Licensing Coordinator for Sega Europe Sega has launched in December 2011 its first online store dedicated to the company’s main brand, Sonic the Hedgehog. The eStore is managed and run by the company RHM Solutions, on behalf of Sega. Europe is the only market on which the store applies, since the USA and the rest of America will most likely get their respective online stores at a later date. The products that can be found online are solely Sonic licensed. The list includes Sonic series DVDs, a collection of Sonic school products (with backpacks, pens or notebooks), plush toys, figurines, apparel, consumer electronics, collectables or posters. And the set of products available is set to widen throughout 2012. A new thing regarding the store is the loyalty program set by Sega: every purchase on the website gives a reward to the

customer. It is too soon yet to give some figures about the online store, since it was created only a few months ago, but according to Isabel Neal-Hooke “the sales are steadily increasing as awareness for the website grows”. The online store gives Sega the possibility to widen their audience, with the possibility to reach the consumers both online and in the bricks and mortar channel. Even though, traditional retail remains the main avenue for Sonic Sales.

Kazachok: How important is the online shop for Sega regarding the Sonic the Hedgehog licensing programme? Isabel Neal-Hooke: The Sonic merchandise website has been a fantastic way to increase the brand visibility and has been well received by Sonic fans. An online presence is key as more consumers turn to the internet to shop in the comfort of their own home. Previously there was no clear destination where consumers could buy the range of official Sonic goods, and now the website provides a great one stop shop for all Sonic things at great prices. For a videogames brand with avid followers who are well acquainted with the online environment, it is particularly important to have a strong offering in the eChannel.

totalyoo.fr Patricia de Wilde Senior VP Consumer Products for Zodiak Kids, France The “Store Corner”of the children-dedicated website totalyoo.fr was launched in the last quarter of 2011. Kids provides the hosting, the marketing and the graphic conception of it. There are currently four properties featured in the YOOstore: Totally Spies!, Gormiti, Saddle Club/Grand Galop and Martin Mystery. On the English-language version of the store, Martin Mystery and Saddle Club aren’t available, as the French licensees don’t carry these rights. The range of products offered on the store goes from novels to board games, video games, DVDs, action figures and diaries. According to Patricia de Wilde, Senior VP of Consumer Products, the great thing about having a an online store is the possibility given to the customers to actually see a selection of what is available in terms of licensed products on their favorite brands.

As she explained, “We are regularly asked by fans where to find our licensed products. The store corner on our website provides them with the possibility to find and buy these products directly”. She goes on saying that “the store is a great showcase for licensed products from Zodiak Kids’ properties. It also enables the children who are our main visitors on totalyoo.fr to view existing products featuring their favorite brands which they can purchase, even though the ranges offered maybe limited”. The YOOstore is too recent to show relevant figures, though sales are slowly increasing. Still the current figures already tell us one interesting fact: the majority of customers to date are girls.

vente-privee.com The French online store vente-privee.com, created in 2001, has enabled companies and licenses to sell their products during special operations that last only from 2 days to a week. During those private sales, customers are given the possibility to buy products with discounts, including licensed goods. This was the case several times in the past few weeks. At the end of February, a private sale was organized on the license The Little Prince, with the opportunity to buy a large range of products using that license. No new products were available for the operation. Mathieu Roussel of Polymark – a licensee of The Little Prince that sold its products on the private sale – explained to us that “only the goods that faced popularity in the traditional retail were available during the sale”. Also, in the first days of March, a Wize & Ope operation was launched on the website. During that sale, watches, sunglasses, collectible figurines and accessories were available for the customers, with discount on every product. Victor Louzon, CEO of Wize & Ope who organized the sale directly (PGS Entertainment usually handles the license internationally), said that “the sale

is an opportunity for the fans of the brand to buy some products with their favorite design, and also the occasion for the brand to expand its notoriety”. The main positive thing about using a private sale, according to both Mathieu Roussel and Victor Louzon, is the success of the store vente-privee.com (“more than 5.5 million visitors each month” said Mathieu Roussel) which widen the customers target. The selling figures of this online store are not higher than those of the retails, but they both are seen complementary according to Mr Louzon. It is the same opinion for Mr Roussel, who said “the sales last only a few days, so people rush to them. So even if the daily figures are higher, they only last for a few days and aren’t really changing our overall figures. However, it makes customers aware of the products available with our license and they can then buy it in retail”. The success of the website is highlighted by Mr Roussel again, who said that “seeing the professionalism of the vente-privee. com teams and the results of this first experience, we may be doing other private sales in the future”.

Victor Louzon CEO of Wize & Ope

Kazachok: What are the advantages of a private sale for the distribution of your license? Victor Louzon: The main advantage is that the sale is open to all the French territories, and to a target that is not always part of our classic retail network. It is also a great publicity for our brand, since it is viewable by millions of users during a defined timeslot. Finally, a vente-privee.com operation is also a seal of quality for the brand, because vente-privee.com only signs partnerships with brands of quality.
