The Princess Grace Awards is a national program dedicated to identifying and assisting emerging theater, dance, and film artists who are at the outset of their careers or at early stages of professional development.

The Princess Grace JustFilms Documentary Awards are made possible by the Ford Foundation. These grants are awarded to help support documentary film projects in social justice areas that are thesis projects by students or filmmakers’ final projects at media arts centers. The emphasis is on filmmakers considered Native/Indigenous Peoples of the Americas. In general, this includes Inuit people, Alaskan Natives, American Indians, Native Hawaiians, First Nations, Métis, and indigenous peoples of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.

Grants will be made in accordance with the project budget; no administrative charges, overhead or indirect costs incurred by the school/organization may be charged against the grant. Typically, grants have ranged from $7,500 to $30,000. Nominations for the Princess Grace JustFilms Documentary Awards are submitted by Deans/Department Chairs in conjunction with the faculty of established U.S. colleges and universities, or directors of non-profit media arts organizations with structured film production programs that the Foundation has invited to apply.

• All candidates from colleges and universities must: • be a full time student or matriculated but not yet have completed thesis film • have completed at least one film as director • be the director of the proposed thesis film • be a United States citizen or show proof of permanent resident status • Universities may also nominate a different undergraduate/graduate candidate for the Princess Grace Film Scholarship using the Princess Grace Film Scholarship application found at www.pgfusa.org. • All candidates from a media arts organization must: • be enrolled in the organization’s structured production training program • have completed at least one film as director • be the director of the proposed final project • be a United States citizen or show proof of permanent resident status • An organization may nominate one candidate for a Princess Grace JustFilms Documentary Award. • Should funding be awarded, acknowledgement of a Princess Grace JustFilms Documentary Award must appear in film credits/any related materials. Two copies of the completed film must be sent to the Foundation, one for Princess Grace Foundation-USA and one for the Ford Foundation.

Review Criteria: The Foundation is looking to identify and support voices from underrepresented communities that have authentic and powerful stories to tell. In this round, particular emphasis is placed on social justice films by Native/Indigenous Peoples of the Americas. In evaluating an application, primary consideration will be given to the talent and potential of the filmmaker as demonstrated by the sample work submitted with each application. The panel will also consider the quality, originality and mastery of the subject and approach of the proposed project, as well as the potential impact the work will have on viewers, the community and the film’s subject(s). The panel is looking for films that not only tell the story but present the topic or something about the topic in an original manner, thereby offering a new perspective on the issue.
