1. GENERAL 1.1. COSPAS-SARSAT System Launched in the early eighties by the four founder countries (Canada, France, Russia, USA), the COSPAS-SARSAT system provides satellite aid to search and rescue (SAR) operations for maritime, aeronautical and terrestrial vehicles anywhere in the world. The system operates in the 406.0 - 406.1 MHz frequency band.It uses distress beacons fitted on mobiles and a constellation of LEO and GEO satellites which relay the 121.5 / 243 MHz signals and process the 406 MHz signal to ground stations (LUT) where the beacon positions are determined (with a precision of 10 NM with 121.5 / 243 signals and less than 2 NM with 406 signals).

Several types of beacons are designed to match the various applications of the COSPAS-SARSAT system: •
EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) for maritime applications.
•
ELT (Emergency Locator Transmitter) for aeronautical applications.
•
PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) for land expeditions.
Each beacon is programmed with a unique 15 digit Hexadecimal identity number (ID). Programming protocols are specified in C/S T. 001. Figure 1: COSPAS-SARSAT System
1.2. Immediate alerting and location calculation Refer to Figure 1: COSPAS-SARSAT System When activated, the KANNAD Auto, Manual+ and Manual transmit, in the 406 MHZ frequency, a coded message with a unique number to identify the distress and the beacon’s owner. This message is picked up by the COSPAS-SARSAT satellites which stores it and continuously retransmits it to the Local User Terminals (L.U.T). Thanks to the geostationary satellites (GEOSAR), the distress is received within minutes and transmitted anywhere in the world. Thanks to the orbital satellites (LEOSAR), the position of the distress is calculated within one nautical mile anywhere in the world using doppler techniques. The typical waiting time for calculating a position to average latitudes is less than one hour. The data are processed and retransmitted to Mission and Rescue Control Centers (MRCC's) and to the Search And Rescue Center (S.A.R.) nearest to the distress to organize the rescue operations. In addition, if the beacon is fitted with a GPS (Refer to 1.3. Presentation of KANNAD Auto / Manual+ / Manual), a position (accuracy typically about a fifty meters) will be transmitted by the beacon within minutes following the distress. The 121.5 MHz frequency is also transmitted by the beacon and is used as a homing frequency in the final

KANNAD Auto As GMDSS, this version is a Category 1 (Float Free) EPIRB designed for fishing, passenger vessels, etc. A Float Free container for above deck outside installation protects the KANNAD 406 Auto and enables the release of the Epirb for automatic activation when submerged in water. It can be manually activated. KANNAD 406 Auto can be fitted with a built-in GPS as option. 1.3.2. KANNAD Manual+ This version is a Category 2 Non Float Free EPIRB designed for professionals, offshore sailing, super yachts, etc. KANNAD Manual+ is fitted with a water switch sensor for automatic activation when submerged in water. It can also be manually activated. This version is supplied with an ergonomic bracket for on board installation and easy transportation. KANNAD Manual+ can be fitted with a built-in GPS as option. 1.3.3. KANNAD Manual This version is a Category 2 Non Float Free EPIRB designed for small and very small boats, wet environment. Manually activated only, KANNAD Manual is not fitted with water switch sensor. This version is supplied with an ergonomic bracket for on board installation and easy transportation. 3. DESIGN FEATURE 3.1. Design of Container and Bracket 3.1.1. Auto releasable container The KANNAD Auto, Float Free version (Category 1), is supplied in an auto release container (1). This container is designed to protect the beacon and to ensure its releasing in the event of a wreck. It must be mounted either in horizontal position on the deck of the vessel or in vertical position against a bulkhead or any vertical and flat surface

This container is fitted with a HAMMAR H20 automatic release system (2) and a manual locking system (3).

Opening the container Automatic opening The release system uses the hydrostatic pressure effect. At a depth of 1.5 m to 4 m (4 to 12 ft.), the release system operates and cuts the locking axe. The cover is released and allows the beacon to rise to the surface. The beacon is automatically activated when submerged in water and out of its container.

3.1.2. Wall mounting bracket A wall mounting bracket is supplied with the KANNAD Manual and Manual+. This mounting bracket is fitted with a strap used to avoid an inadvertent ejection of the Beacon. It is designed to be mounted vertically against a bulkhead or any vertical flat surface.

3.3. Working principle To avoid any false alarm, the ON push button of KANNAD Auto, Manual+ and Manual is hidden by a sliding locking system protected by a breakable seal. This triple activation system (breaking a seal, sliding the locking system, pushing the ON push button) gives reliability to the distress signal. A LED indicates operation. The KANNAD Auto, Manual+ and Manual are designed to transmit on two frequencies (121,5 MHz and 406 MHz): •
The 121.5 MHz frequency is mainly used for homing in the final stage of the rescue operation.
•
The 406 MHz is used by the COSPAS-SARSAT satellites for precise pinpointing and identification code (Nationality and Personal Number) transmission.
•
When using a GPS version, within minutes of activation, more accurate latitude / longitude coordinates will be determined and transmitted to the rescue center (RCC) with the identification message.
These functions are performed thanks to: •
A logical circuit and 406.028/121.5 MHz transmitter on the same PCB;
•
A 2-frequency antenna;
•
A power supply;
•
A water switch sensor (KANNAD Auto & Manual+);
•
A reed relay (ILS) (not used for KANNAD Manual);
•
A Built-in GPS receiver (GPS versions only).

3.3.1. Transmitter Once activated, the transmitter operates continuously on 121.5 MHz with an output power of 50 mW. The modulation is an audio frequency sweeping upwards from 500 Hz to 1400 Hz at 3 Hz rate. The AM modulation factor is over 85%. During the first 48 hours of operation, a digital message is transmitted on 406.028 MHz every 50 seconds. The output power on 406 MHz is 5 W. Bi-phase modulation at 400 bps enables the transmission of all the relevant identification information to the COSPAS-SARSAT satellites in 440 ms (or 520 ms for GPS versions). 3.3.1.1. Architecture The transmitter is driven by a micro-controller that manages the PLL, amplitude and phase signal modulation. 3.3.1.2. Device against permanent transmission The 406 MHz transmission duration is 440 ms (or 520 ms for GPS version) every 50 seconds. Should the transmission be unusually too long, a protective circuit stops the beacon: the power supply fuse is blown after 10 or 17 seconds (depending of battery voltage) of uninterrupted transmission without involving the microprocessor.

3.3.1.3. Protection against repetitive self-test mode transmissions Self-test sequence is activated by pushing a specific button. A new self-test cannot be initiated before the end of the whole sequence. The microprocessor takes into consideration a pushing of the test button only on a falling edge and not on a low level. Therefore, if the test button is held unintentionally in press position, a new self test cannot occur. 3.3.1.4. Transmission period The microprocessor drives the 406 MHz transmission repetition time (440 ms every 50 seconds or 520 ms for GPS versions). In order to prevent simultaneous transmission if two or more beacons are triggered together, a variable repetition time between 47.5 seconds and 52.5 seconds is computed by adding a random delay to 47.5 seconds. 3.3.2. Digital Transmission 3.3.2.1. Protocols The KANNAD Auto, Manual+ and Manual are fully compatible with the transmission protocol specified by the COSPAS-SARSAT C/S T.001 document. Each beacon is programmed with a unique code giving: •
Nationality;

Unique Identification number;
•
Type of beacon (Epirb).

or manually (all versions) by pushing a ON push button (4) protected by a locking system (2). This locking system is protected by breakable seal (1).
Once the beacon has been manually activated, OFF mode can be selected by pressing the TEST (3) push button. Self-Test is carried out by pressing the TEST push button (3) (if manually activated) Programming is carried out thanks to an interface (6) located on the upper part of the beacon. 3.4.1. Off The Beacon is off if it has not been automatically (water switch sensor 7) or manually (push button 4) activated, or if after activation, the beacon has been disabled by: •
removing the beacon from water, if activated automatically;
•
pressing the TEST push button (3), if activated manually.
In the event that the beacon refuses to turn off despite the above actions, it is possible to stop the transmission by fully disabling the beacon (disconnecting the battery) thanks to an external deactivation device (8). See paragraph 3.5.1. Beacon deactivation.

3.4.2. Self-Test Self-Test mode is a temporary mode in which the beacon checks battery voltage and main characteristics of transmitter: 406 MHz power output and 406 PLL locking. In addition, the GPS serial link is tested for versions fitted with a GPS. Self-Test is activated by pressing the «TEST» push button (3). Self-Test sequence consists in a short modulated 121.5 MHz and particular 406 MHz transmission. These two transmissions are performed less than 15 seconds after pressing the «TEST» push button (3). 406 MHz Self-Test transmission is coded with the inverted frame requested by COSPAS-SARSAT technical specification. 3.4.2.1. 121.5 and 406 MHz transmission test Copyright © MARTEC SERPE-IESM. A buzzer transmits an audible signal (audio frequency 3 KHz) every seconds.

Control LED (6) is flashing: - 1 flash every 2 seconds indicates good operation; - 2 flashes every 2 seconds indicate faulty operation.
3.4.3. Programming Programming mode is a mode enabling digital communication with a programming and testing equipment. This mode is selected by: •
Positioning the optical pen of programming kit (Refer to Figure 18: Programming) over the beacon control led (6);
•
Pressing «TEST» push button (3) while maintaining the optical pen on the beacon control led (6).
3.4.4. On This mode is selected: •
either automatically (KANNAD Auto and Manual+) by submerging the water switch contact (7);
•
or manually (all versions) by: •
breaking the seal of the locking system (1);
•
unlocking the locking system (2),
•
pressing the ON push button (4).
When this mode is selected: •
The GPS receiver waits for a GPS fix(1) (versions fitted with a GPS);
•
Transmission starts on 406 MHz after 50 seconds (406 burst every 50 seconds);
•
Transmission starts on 121.5 MHz after the first 406 MHz burst;
•
GPS position is updated every 20 minutes (versions fitted with a GPS).
The flash (5) blinks with a period of 3 seconds. A buzzer transmits an audible signal (audio frequency 3 KHz) every seconds. The beacon can be reset by pressing the TEST push button (3). NOTE:

If a GPS Fix is not obtained within 5 minutes, the GPS receiver stops and starts again 20 minutes later.

3.5. False alarm prevention 3.5.1. Beacon deactivation If the beacon was activated by mistake, it can be manually de-activated. (1) Beacon overboard For KANNAD Auto and Manual+ only, if the beacon was activated by water switch sensor (beacon overboard), it can be de-activated by removing it from water and waiting a few seconds. (2) Beacon manually activated
(3) Fully disabling the beacon In the event the beacon refuses to turn off despite the above actions, the transmission can be stopped by fully disabling the beacon (battery disconnection). This can be done by fully screwing the external deactivation device using a standard cross head screwdriver (5 mm max. width, Pozidriv N° 1 : 5x100 if possible), fully screw the external deactivation device. This will turn the power off.

These labels are resistant to deterioration by prolonged exposure to sunlight and are not unduly affected by seawater or oil, and abrasion resistant. 6.3. Programming Programming of beacons shall only be performed in our factory or by authorized maintenance station. KANNAD Auto, Manual+ and Manual are programmed with a unique code number (MMSI, radio code1 or serialized protocol) with a MARTEC Serpe-Iesm PKR programmer.

7. MAINTENANCE POLICY In order to follow recommendation of safety organization which specifies that a security device has not to be used over 50% of its shelf life, MARTEC Serpe-Iesm recommends not to use a beacon after the battery expiry date, written on the markings label. 7.1. Scheduled maintenance KANNAD Auto, Manual+, Manual are designed for minimal maintenance. The automatic release system of the container (KANNAD Auto only) has to be replaced every 2 years. A 5 year maintenance with battery replacement is mandatory. 7.2. Battery replacement
