Keith Green Golf Classic On July 17th, sixty-seven members of the Mitchie Family braved the early Sunday morning chill to compete in the annual Keith Green Golf Classic at the Ashgrove Golf Club.

The winning team was Garth Jones, Mick Carter, Greg Hedger (pictured above) with Dave Gallagher who finished just ahead of Greg Brown, Gary McDowall, Paul Amabile and Rod Smith. Winners of ‘Closest to the Pin’ prizes were Murray Turner, Dave Gallagher, Roy Paton and Enzo Dagostino with Greg Brown winning the longest drive. We believe extra points should have gone to Rod Smith though, for a spirited downhill pursuit of a runaway golf-buggy, where Rod overtook, jumped in and brought the escapee to a stop. Good effort Rod, we’ve never seen you move so fast! Other highlights of the day included the appearance of the courageous Grant ‘Jabba’ Bryant who turned up after a sleepless night in Emergency with arm in plaster to drive his team’s buggy. The injury was a result of Jabba’s infamous return to senior soccer, where he was flattened in the first minute of the game, only to play on to half time with a broken wrist. We were all in awe of his bravery and Mitchie spirit. (Well,

apparently that’s what he reckoned, anyway…!) Eight girls from the Women’s teams also joined in the fun of the day. However on the course, it must be said, they looked more like a chorus line than a golf team as they lined up and teed off in unison. If Synchronised Golf becomes an Olympic sport, our girls might just have a chance of making the team. And the outfits? Well, suffice to say the girl’s (pictured below) took the competition very seriously (?) and dressed to impress. It was fantastic to have everyone involved and having fun, particularly to see players from the Premier league, O/35’s and Women’s competitions as well as parents, committee members and friends all together for the day. Thanks to the organisers for the day, especially Gary Green, Rod Smith, Paul Amabile, Joe Eardley and Amo Pase. A special thank you to Keithy Green who made

a generous donation to provide all the participants with a BBQ lunch afterwards. See you all next year!

Want to travel to Sydney with Mitchelton FC to see the Qantas Socceroos take on a South American qualifier for a place in the 2006 World Cup??? A group of Mitchie players and supporters has travelled to the last three FIFA World Cup qualifying games for the Socceroos in Sydney (1993 vs. Argentina), Melbourne (1997 vs. Iran) and Melbourne (2001 vs. Uruguay). This year is no different. The Football Federation of Australia has taken the unprecedented step of reserving all available tickets for the “Football Community” of Australia and Mitchelton FC has registered our interest in applying for tickets. If Australia defeats the Solomon Islands in September we will then qualify to play a South American opponent on either the 12th or 16th November in Sydney. If you would like to join a group

from Mitchelton FC to travel to this once-in-a-lifetime event please contact Rohan Cassell on 3355

Join in the A-League March Past

As part of the events for Qld Roar’s first home game on Sunday 28 August at Suncorp Stadium in the new Hyundai A-League National Football Competition, an Olympic Games-style March Past is being organised. We would like to have 20 players of all ages from our club represent Mitchelton Football Club in the march. The players are required to be dressed in our Mitchie playing strip and 2 players will be holding a banner with our Club name and emblem. There is also a special prize for the best banner to be announced at half time of the match, so if anyone has creative qualities and would like to help with the banner, please step forward now! All participants in the march will receive free entry into the stadium and refreshments courtesy of Qld Roar Football Club. The main game kicks off at 3pm and participants in the march are required to be there at 2pm. If you would like to be part of this event, please contact Greg Hedger on 3851 0485. Please note, only the first twenty players who phone can be accepted.

As you are aware the Mitchelton Football Club is currently conducting its annual Art Union. Again we have some great prizes on offer and the lucky winners will be drawn this Saturday 6 August at 6.45pm. For the team that sells the most tickets, we have a Mitchie cap for every player and also a Coaching session for the whole team with the Club’s Head Coach and ex-Socceroo, Greg Brown on the main field. For the individual player who sells the most tickets, we have a Sports Bag full of goodies to win so keep selling those tickets… Tickets can by returned anytime this week up until the Art Union is drawn at 6.45pm on Saturday. Our Art Union is the only dedicated fundraising activity we undertake each season and we use the funds raised to directly improve our facilities. Late last year we decided to extend the underground watering system from the No.1 and No.2 fields to include the additional 6 junior fields. We thought the outlay in doing so was well worth it, with the benefits being spread across all our playing members. This year we plan to make our final payment on this significant investment. Hope to see you at the main game this weekend, when our Mitchie Premier League team kicks off at 6pm against Palm Beach. The Premier Reserves play at 3pm with our Annual Coaches vs. Managers Challenge at 5pm. Saturday’s game will be a tough assignment for both our sides as Palm Beach are undefeated in Reserve Grade and if they win their game in hand will be top of the Premier League also. We have full bar and canteen facilities available with hot food on offer in the canteen and great coffee from Café La Strada who generously donate 50c per cup sold to the club. The Art Union will be drawn at half-time of the Premier League game, so please come down and support the team and hopefully collect your prizes at the same time! Thank you again for your support. U8 Millwall Green wins Carnival A fantastic effort and congratulations to Mitchelton Millwall Green U8 who won the Finals at the Ridge Hills Soccer Carnival on Sunday 5 June 2005. The boys performed extraordinary soccer all day and found the competition enjoyable and grueling playing a total 7 games. Luck was on our side as the team only just got into the finals. We won the Quarter finals in a nailbiting extra time on a “golden goal and corner

situation.” After that the boys were not going to be denied a trophy and found extra focus and strength for the semis (against Brisbane City ) and the finals (against Albany Creek). Special thanks to Tony Bernardi and Todd Kliendienst, our fantastic coaches for all their work and to the players who love their soccer and the Mitchie club! T h a n k s a n d Congratulations Paul Garufi Manager

Have you got a story you would like to share with the Mitchie Family? Email your articles and photos to [email protected] and we will do our best to include them in the next edition of the Mitchie Bounce.

Did you know Through the efforts and enthusiasm of Ernie Green in the late 1920’s, a Mitchie team emerged who called themselves the Black Diamonds. The team played in Bowman’s Paddock which was a cow paddock during the week, but each weekend was transformed into a football field (after considerable back bending exercise!) Bowman’s Paddock is presently part of the Brookside Shopping Centre site. In 1930, the Black Diamonds broke the hold which Virginia had on the YMCA Inter-Suburban Soccer Association Cup. Virginia had won the Cup in 1928 and 1929, but the

B l a c k Diamonds t h e n dominated the competition for the next three years, winning it in 1930, 1931 and 1932. The Cup is still held by this Club and the Black Diamonds have gone down in history as one of Mitchie’s most successful teams. The 1930 team (who, incidentally, had to make their own shirts) were Eric and Owen (Mucker) Gordon, Col Meade, Bill and Andy Laird, Eric Birtwell, Frank Nugent, Bill Jones, Cec and Roy Reid, Bill Lincoln and Dave Fairweather. George Green was Coach, Andy Dixon was Manager and Alf

Girl’s Coaching Session Mitchie would like to invite all girls currently playing for junior divisional teams to attend a coaching session with our Premier League Head Coach, Greg Brown. Greg has an impressive playing and coaching record including playing for the Australian Socceroo team in 1991-92 and coaching the Australian Women’s Soccer team, the Matildas, to the World Cup in the USA in 1998-99. Greg also played in the National league for the Adelaide Sharks and the Parramatta Eagles. The coaching session will be held on Wednesday 10 August from 6pm to 7pm. To express your interest in the training session, please register you name at the canteen. This is an excellent opportunity for all the girls of Mitchie to gain an insight into a new level of the game and we hope will encourage and develop our burgeoning women’s program.
