LOOKING TO THE FUTURE: THE THIRD DECADE OF KOMEN GREATER NYC We have just finished a wonderful year of celebration, honoring the 20th anniversary of Komen Greater NYC and the achievements of our first two decades. As we enter 2011, it’s time to look ahead to our next decade. As extraordinary as our accomplishments have been over the past 20 years, we have no time to rest on our laurels. There is still an enormous amount of work to be done so that one day, hopefully very soon, we can join together to celebrate the day when we achieve our vision: a world without breast cancer! In the years to come, Komen Greater NYC will continue to be a leader on issues that affect breast health and breast cancer screening and treatment. We will also continue to be your trusted resource about what type of screening will best detect breast cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage and continue to provide the information you need to make informed choices. Together with the Komen Advocacy Alliance, Komen Greater NYC will remain actively involved in advocacy issues that affect breast health in our community and the nation: • We will keep an eye on the health care reform law to make sure that its cancer screening and treatment provisions are enforced, some of which do not go into effect for years. In the interim, we will remain vigilant in ensuring that cancer screening is available for all women in the communities we serve, especially for the underserved and undocumented. • We will continue to monitor pending legislation in New York and other states and inform our constituents about the best available screening options for women with dense breasts. • Our fight to maintain funding for the New York State Cancer Services Program will continue because as we all know, early detection is the key to successful breast cancer treatment. • We will establish relationships and continue to promote our positions regarding women’s health issues with the new governor’s office, the state Department of Health, and both houses of the legislature.

As our nation’s economic malaise continues, more New Yorkers have become vulnerable. Now more than ever, they need our help. To that end, we will also continue to fund community-based education and outreach, screening, treatment and support programs for people with breast cancer and their families so that underserved New Yorkers have equality in access to breast health care and services. Komen Greater NYC’s exciting roster of events — Tickled Pink!, the Annual Awards Luncheon, and the Komen New York City Race for the Cure — are the major sources for funding for our work. Please join us at these events. Become a member of the Young Professionals Committee. Create a breast cancer awareness fundraiser of your own. Or just make a donation — honoring a survivor or remembering someone who lost their battle. The support we receive from our generous friends helps us continue to provide education and services for women whose lives have already been impacted by breast cancer as well as underwrite national and local peer-reviewed research to find the cures. We are extremely proud that the Komen network is hailed as the funder of many of the major breast cancer advances of the past 20 years. However, we need your continued support to ensure that we have the funding required to be in the forefront of helping researchers to develop the screening, diagnosis and treatment choices of the future. Rest assured, we will not stop until we find all the cures for this devastating disease. Together, I know that we are going to be even more successful in the upcoming decade. Together, I know we will achieve our vision of a world without breast cancer.

2010: A Year Filled with Events In 2010, Komen Greater NYC celebrated its 20th anniversary with a year filled with events, which raised breast cancer awareness and increased appreciation for the Affiliate’s accomplishments over the last two decades. In the next pages, we will share highlights of the past year.

YOUR GENEROSITY FUELS OUR FIGHT AGAINST BREAST CANCER Everyone knows at least one of Komen Greater NYC’s signature events – Tickled Pink!, the Annual Awards Luncheon, City in Pink, the Komen New York City Race for the Cure®. Thanks to these and other events and the generosity of many people each year, we are able to give out millions of dollars in grants anually to deserving organizations on the front lines of the fight against breast cancer. But you may not be aware of what goes on behind the scenes to choose our grantees. Let’s take a look behind the curtain.

OUR GRANTEES: A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH Each year, Komen Greater NYC announces the year’s grantees at the Annual Awards Luncheon celebration. But the work that goes into that announcement actually starts seven months earlier. The process is led by our Director of Grants and Public Policy, Anita McFarlane, MPH, and Grants Program Coordinator, Zenia E. DacioMesina — working together with our CEO Dara Richardson-Heron, M.D. and the Grants Policy & Education Committee (GPEC), chaired by Board member Ivy Gamble Cobb. The GPEC is made up of key players in the breast cancer arena, as well as survivors and representatives from our service area’s breast cancer community. Meeting six times a year, GPEC provides input on grant focus and distribution.

WHERE THE MONEY GOES We are proud to say that 75 percent of the net funds raised goes to: • Addressing the community breast health needs of underserved metropolitan New Yorkers; and • Supporting essential local education, screening and treatment programs The remaining 25 percent underwrites national research to find the cures. In 2010, thanks to your support, we awarded a record-breaking $4.3 million despite extremely difficult economic times: • More than $2.8 million is underwriting 37 community-based breast health programs providing educational outreach, screening coordination, support and treatment services. • Over $1.2 million is supporting national peer-reviewed breast cancer research projects.

Our goal is to be as inclusive as possible, so we invite organizations to apply by posting information on our website, sending out emails to current and past grantees, and contacting previously unfunded applicants. To make sure those interested in applying understand our goals and objectives, McFarlane and Dacio-Mesina host grant development workshops and provide one-on-one technical assistance. After applications are received and vetted to make sure they are complete, they go to one of four review panels — screening coordination, education and outreach, support and treatment and clinical research enrollment. Each panel has four to five members — nurses, physicians, health educators, social workers, survivors and others from the breast health, public health and cancer control communities — who volunteer their time and expertise to make sure that each application gets a fair evaluation. We are constantly assessing our community’s breast health needs and making panelists aware of who we are serving, what the deficits in access and services are, and what we want the grants to accomplish.

• $242,493 is funding clinical research enrollment, increasing the capacity enroll women in breast cancer clinical trials. • $40,000 is financing pilot educational programs. On May 19th, Komen Greater NYC will be making its formal 2011 grants announcement at our Annual Luncheon. The work and the commitment of Komen Greater NYC staff, the Grants Policy and Education Committee and volunteering professional reviewers is all focused on making a difference — a difference that will help us end breast cancer forever.

The panels’ final decisions are provided to our staff who shares them with the GPEC, which analyzes the results taking into account our priorities and equitable geographic and monetary distribution. For example, last year we increased the amount of screening grants to compensate for cutbacks in New York State’s Cancer Screening Program. The committee’s recommendations are presented to the Komen Greater NYC Board of Directors for final approval. Our Small Grants Program, which underwrites pilot breast health programs, conferences and travel scholarships to meetings, conferences, and symposia, makes awards four times a year. Grants are awarded after review by staff and input from the GPEC. Education Expo

20TH ANNUAL KOMEN NYC RACE FOR THE CURE

®

Nothing could keep nearly 21,000 enthusiastic women, men and children — including more than 1,500 survivors — from Central Park for the 20th annual Komen New York City Race for the Cure. Cloudy skies and the threat of rain were no match for committed Race participants, determined to run breast cancer out of town. The event raised $5.4 million. Dr. Mehmet Oz, Gabrielle Union, Stephen Colbert, Jill Eikenberry and Michael Tucker, Judge Judy Sheindlin and numerous elected officials were on hand to help celebrate this Race milestone. Led by Race Grand Marshal and Komen for the Cure founder, Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker, the crowd — including 924 teams —wound its way along the Race route, many honoring their loved ones with "in celebration of" or "in memory of" placards.

Despite the weather, attendees visited the Education Expo and the more than 50 sponsor booths, cheered on the Survivor Race T-shirt Bling Contest entrants, watched the Survivor Parade – two firsts in honor of the 20th annual Race – and made congratulatory 60-second videos for the Affiliate for posterity.
