Fall is my favorite season. Fall is the reason I farm. I love smelling fresh shelled corn, planting wheat while looking at trees ablaze with color, and sorting out spring-born heifers for replacements. Fall is also the time of year when my local YFA chapter plans our winter agenda. I know YFA is supposed to be an educational opportunity where farmers can learn how to be better stewards of the land, but there are other reasons why I love YFA. Everybody in YFA has their reasons why they are active and involved in their local chapters. Mine has to be the people. The memories of my daughter, Bailey, playing with my advisor's boys, Riley and Coleson, from last winter makes me smile. Vickie Taylor and Alan Hubble should have their own show on food network, and Guy Taylor's love of liberal politics are some of the reasons I love YFA. Please participate. You'll meet some wonderful people, and who knows, maybe by association we can be better stewards of the land. Jonathan Gosser YFA State President

Hello Everybody!!! Hope harvest has been going well for you and your family. Maybe next year Mother Nature can “get her ducks in a row” and give us some better weather. A special word of thanks goes to the Hardin County for an interesting and informative Summer Tour. Hardin County did an excellent job with a great set of different stops and points of interest. Every time I pass a service truck I look to see if it was made at Altec. Matt and Rebecca Crain, Mark Thomas and Kerby Grey and all the chapter members did an excellent job despite the fact they worked with three different advisors over the course of the planning and presentation. Congratulations Hardin County!!! Our Member of the Year visit will be next week due to a conflict with the judges schedules. We have three excellent candidates this year. They are Patrick & Renita Preston, Hardin County, Tom & Jennifer Tucker, Warren County and Scott & Shea Lowe, Calloway County. Thanks to each member and their advisors for entering this contest. I’m sure this will be an interesting visit. I want everyone to know that Dr. Pete Dreisbach retired as Director for the KY Leadership Training Center on September 30th. Dr. Pete loved working with the Kentucky Young Farmers. His service and loyalty to our convention and to our organization will definitely be missed. We all wish “Dr. Pete” a long and prosperous retirement. He plans to move to Michigan and live there for now. We will keep tabs on him and let you know how and what he is doing. The National Institute is just around the corner. Early registration ends soon, so go to NYFEA.org and click on the Institute link to get the details. This year, the National Institute is in Memphis, Tennessee. That is about as close as it will get, especially for the folks in the western end of the state. If you’ve never attended a National Institute, this would be a good one to attend. It is going to be a neat experience. Peggy Jo has more details in this issue. Please remember to enter the KY YFA Production and Leadership Contests this fall. Mark Thomas has developed several of the contests in the Excel format and that should make the entries easier to fill out. It should also make the calculations more consistent and easier to grade. Have a safe and bountiful harvest!!!! See you in Memphis!!!! Bruce Metzger YFA State Advisor

Highlights from Hardin County By: Jennifer Arnold, State Reporter The Hardin County Chapter of the Kentucky Young Farmer Association hosted the Summer Tour during July 27 and 28 in Elizabethtown, KY. The tours actually began a little earlier this summer as the group toured Altech, a company that produces small and medium sized buckets for aerial trucks. We were then treated to an amazing tour of the Fort Knox Military Reservation, which included a meal in the mess hall with soldiers that had returned home from a tour overseas. The Young Farmers were able to talk with soldiers and also get a closer look at some vehicles used by the Army. Those in attendance felt honored and privileged to have this opportunity. As the evening approached, the group headed out to the historic Glendale community for a tour of Maple Hill Farm. We enjoyed a wonderful meal provided by the Hardin County Beef Cattle Association and a variety of homemade ice cream. As the Outlaw Justice band entertained the crowd, tours were given of the beautiful farmhouse and a bale bandit demonstration occurred in the field. On Saturday morning, the tours began at the Rogers Farm. The group enjoyed a hayride through the fields with a demonstration of banding and loading straw into a semi-trailer. Then we toured the Goldsmith Sheep Farm, a former KYFA member of the year contestant. His sheep operation consisted of total confinement. We ended our tour at the Thomas Academy Farm with another wonderful meal. It was such a beautiful setting for lunch with a large lake and huge barns in the background. Thanks for another great summer tour Hardin County!
