First semester deals with four themes: Love, Fantasy, Concepts of "I" seen through Adventure and Violence Second semester explores 7 themes: Superstition, Families, Tolerance, Stereotypes, Modern Perspectives, Life and Death, Solidarity and Solitude Note: the format of the theme work follows that of the AP Spanish Language Examination

The required reading list for the May 2010 examination includes works from the medieval to the Twentieth-century periods by authors such as Don Juan Manuel, Cervantes, Unamuno, Borges, Cortazar, García Márquez, and selected poems by authors such us Góngora, Quevedo, Inés de la Cruz, Martí, Darío, Lorca, and Guillén.

Critical listening, reading, writing and speaking skill development in culturallyauthentic scenarios Grammatical concepts include uncommon irregular verbs in the present, preterit, imperfect, compound and subjunctive tenses, "si" phrase sentences, commands, nouns with gender irregularities, written accent study Concept development uses the AP Spanish Language Exam skill set as its focus

This course is taught in Spanish almost exclusively and encourages students to do likewise. Students are required to read, understand and interpret Spanish literary texts on their own.

Through the required texts students will develop proficiency in close reading, as well as in the formulating and expressing critical judgments in written and oral Spanish. To this end, students will learn the techniques of literary analysis using critical terms.
