raxxas is well known for their huge Maxx® and Revo® class trucks, and now they have targeted the smaller end of the scale with the new LaTrax Rally Car. This pint-sized RC car is a little bundle of fun that goes with you anywhere, and is ready in a moments notice to throw down and shred tires. Suddenly, you’re plotting apexes around the furniture on the patio, or daydreaming about slip angles as you power-slide around the lunchroom table at the office. The Rally is small, but the fun is full size. The value is huge. At $129.99, the LaTrax Rally checks off a long list of performance features.

Performance Charge up the included 5-cell battery with the included charger, install the supplied AA batteries in the transmitter, and you’re ready to rally. The 2.4GHz radio system is already bound, so you’re connected once the power is switched on. The first thing you notice is smooth linear throttle response. Immediately, you appreciate the traction and control provided by all-wheel drive. The Rally accelerates quickly and precisely with go-kart like steering. As the tires broke in during the first battery pack, the steering became very settled and the Rally tracked well. The smaller size does limit you to run on mostly smooth surfaces and hard-packed dirt. The tires provide just enough grip for control, and some awesome drifting action. Small cracks in the sidewalk provided some “air time” and the make-shift track in front of my house provided more than enough entertainment. A trip off-road inadvertently tested the weather-proofing when the sprinklers came on. In the dirt, the racing slicks were limited, but the four-wheel drive still allowed me to throw some roost and maintain control. The Rally was unfazed by the water, and the fun was intensified as the power sliding and drifting challenged my driving skills.

Suspension Small doesn’t mean lacking. The Rally features fully independent suspension and red coil-over dampers to smooth out the racing surface and provide plenty of grip in the corners.

CV Axles Constant Velocity axles are in each corner and transfer power smoothly from the gear differentials to the wheels.

4WD Rules Full time 4WD means the LaTrax has “go anywhere” ability! Drift around corners, or hit the apex perfectly and you’ll put the power down to the ground.

Performance Tip Add a 6-cell Traxxas power cell battery pack, part #2925A, for more punch and speed. Get back on the road quicker with an EZ-Peak 5 NiMH charger. Set it for a 2-amp charge, and be back on the road in about 30 minutes. THe charger will require an adapter for the LaTrax style plug, part #3061.

Weather Proof The Rally can handle any environment. A puddle in the street, or water on the floor isn’t an issue. The electronics are protected from the elements for Rally fun anywhere.

Conclusion The small size gives it great portability for RC fun on the go. It’s like when digital cameras became so small and eventually migrated to your phone. The camera is always there so you take more pictures. Same for the Rally. You’ll find yourself driving and having fun more often. The track is anywhere you want it to be, indoors or out.

onster trucks! Without a doubt, they are the most high-powered, hard-hitting, mayhemmaking trucks to ever touch dirt—or crush cars. There’s simply nothing like them, whether you’re watching from the stands, or driving one of your own with a Traxxas monster truck.

Traxxas is number-one in monster trucks, no matter what scale, power system, or style you prefer. The hugely popular Stampede and Monster Jam models are the gold standard for tough, affordable monster fun. With the release of the T-Maxx, nitro-powered monsters became the number-one type of RC vehicle, with Traxxas out front in innovation, performance, and popularity. With the T-Maxx still firmly entrenched as King of the Monsters, Traxxas took the next step in monster truck evolution with the Revo. Built on suspension and chassis technology still unmatched, Revo is the ultimate nitropowered monster truck. T-Maxx and Revo

2WD and 4WD This one’s easy: a two-wheel drive truck (2WD) is driven only by its rear wheels—and there’s two of ‘em, of course. A four-wheel drive (4WD, also known as 4X4) truck puts power down with all four tires. It’s a difference you can feel. Compared to a 4WD truck, 2WD models feel less stable or “planted” as you drive. 4WD trucks accelerate and brake more aggressively than similar 2WD models, and have more cornering grip. Top speeds for similar and equally-powered 2WD and 4WD models are nearly the same. For example, the 2WD (and lighter weight) Stampede VXL can top 65mph, while the Stampede 4X4 will run just over 60mph.

When T-Maxx was first unleashed, it ignored conventions, broke all the “rules,” and forever changed how we play with monster trucks.

Electric Power—“Brushed” and “Brushless” Traxxas electric Stampedes and Rustlers are available with either of two types of power systems: the XL-5 speed control and Titan 550 “brushed” motor combo, and the Velineon VXL-3s speed control and 3500 motor “brushless” setup. Rather than get deep into explaining the technology, let’s get straight to the benefits of each system.

Traxxas EZ-Start makes nitro a snap by lighting the glow plug and starting the engine at the press of a button.

Brushed: The Titan 550 brushed motor is the workhorse of RC, has good torque and speed for any driver, and serves up 30+mph speeds in the trucks it powers. It’s also much less costly to manufacture than a brushless Velineon system, making the truck more affordable overall. Brushed motors spin at a lower maximum RPM, and require some occasional cleaning and maintenance to extend the motor life. In the end though, the “brushes” inside of a brushed motor wear against the spinning commutator. Friction between these parts will eventually wear both out, and a replacement motor will be required. The good news: a replacement motor is very inexpensive. Brushless: The Velineon Brushless Power System spins its 3500 motor to higher RPM for greater speed, and also operates more efficiently so you get more run time from each battery charge. A brushless motor also has extremely long life with virtually no maintenance needs because there are no contact points (brushes) within the motor to wear out. Nitro or Electric Power?

E

lectric trucks are cleaner and quieter than nitro (engine-powered) trucks, and electric trucks require less maintenance. They also produce very high torque, so you really feel a blast of power when you accelerate. However, you can only run as long as you can keep your batteries charged. Nitro power allows longer run time (just gas up and go when fuel runs low), but nitro is really about the driving experience. The unmistakable wail of a TRX 3.3 Racing Engine revving at 50,000 RPM, the sour-sweet smell of nitromethane blasting out of the exhaust…it’s a Ferrari-meets-Funny-Car thrill everytime you pull the trigger.

Pounding Pavement What? Monster trucks on blacktop? Actually, that’s where most Traxxas monster trucks make their maiden voyage: straight from the box to the driveway. Monster trucks aren’t bred for road handling, which actually adds to the fun. Wheelies are nearly endless if you’ve got a wheelie bar (you can get one as an option if your truck isn’t factory equipped). Pitch your monster into a corner, and it will lean hard on the suspension and hit the three-wheel motion like Ice Cube’s ’64 Impala (if you’re not hip, that means it’ll lift the inside front tire). Hustling through turns and watching the shocks absorb the cornering loads is a lesson in physics (who cares?), and it’s a bunch of fun (now we’re talking) to see the effectiveness of the monster suspension technology. Hop down curbs, jump speed bumps, speedrun the sidewalk (no pedestrians!)…it’s all good. Get a plastic skateboard ramp from Toy Town or Sports N’ Stuff, and you’ve got a perfect monster truck jump. There’s no shortage of ways to get your monster on without going off-road.

…And Anywhere Else Mega suspension travel, massive tires, and terrain-defying torque make monster trucks capable of full-throttle fun that’s limited only by your imagination, and the eventual need to eat, sleep, go to school, or get to work. And you can probably blow off at least one of those.

Get Down in the Dirt Monster trucks in the dirt? Who could have imagined that (besides everybody)? Unlike pavement, dirt interacts with your truck as the tires throw dirt and rocks and raise a wake of dust as you motor through off-road terrain. Wide tires give monsters maximum grip, and their soft sidewalls let them conform to objects for climbing and crawling traction. That helps on trails too, where roots and rocks are all part of the action.

Low-CG High Performance The Low-Down on Low-CG

ith its Velineon® Brushless Power System, shaft-driven full-time 4WD, and Ultra Shock suspension, the Slash 4X4 is a high-performance shortcourse machine. Why is a Low-CG better?

T

he benefits of the Low-CG conversion are easy to appreciate as you drive. You can dive deeper into corners and carry more speed through the turn. Responsiveness to steering inputs becomes even quicker. The limits of traction and control are higher, allowing you to drive “closer to the edge.” And as you creep over that edge, the transition from “at-the-limit” to “over-the-limit” is more predictable and easier to recover from—as opposed to a sudden spinout. These benefits are due to the location of the center of mass relative to the roll axis, which dynamically affects the…maybe we should just draw a picture. As the trucks corner, the truck with the lower CG experiences less chassis roll. This spreads weight more evenly over the tires, increases traction, and allows continued acceleration in the turns.

The Low-CG Experience As soon as you drop your Low-CG Slash 4x4, you will notice the differences—the look, the handling, the performance. The Low-CG chassis has a long, smooth bottom side profile along the entire wheelbase. This allows the vehicle to slide smoothly across all driving surfaces when the suspension is fully bottomed out; for example, when landing that big jump. With the heavier components held as deep in the chassis

ut any two RC cars on a stretch of pavement, and a drag race will go down. Guaranteed. There’s no easier way to race, and no better way to show who’s got the superior machine. Mash the trigger and see who gets to the line first—just like in full-size drag racing, right? Not even close! What looks like a simple racing challenge is actually a precisely executed series of steps and strategy. Before the cars even take off, many factors can have equal or greater impact on the race results than the few seconds the cars spend on the track. That’s the action (and fun!) Traxxas delivers with the “Drag Timing System,” or DTS-1.

DRAG RACING Starting Console and “Christmas tree”

Any Car, Anywhere

So called for its rough (very rough) resemblance to the evergreen that greets Santa each year, the Christmas tree is equipped with LEDs that flash in sequence to start the race, ending with a final green light. As in NHRA racing, the DTS-1’s light sequence is different in Sportsman racing than Pro racing. After the racers cross the finish line, the DTS-1 will flash its LEDs in the lane of the winning driver. The Christmas tree will also show if a driver fouls the start and “red lights.”

With the DTS-1, you and your driving buddies can square off with any pair of RC cars. Monster trucks, buggies, road cars, nitro, electric, big, small— whatever you’ve got, you can line up on the starting line and enjoy drag-racing fun on any stretch of flat pavement. The easily portable DTS-1 sets up in just a few minutes, so you can line ‘em up in the parking lot today and your buddy’s driveway tomorrow.

Racing With the DTS-1

The DTS-1 includes a “Christmas tree” equipped Starting Line Console featuring Pro or Sportsman stage modes and a Finish Line Console that makes the critical who-crossedthe-line-first determination. Staging position at the start line (and the difference between winning and losing) is determined with millimeter and millisecond accuracy. Ultra-precise laser beams allow perfect staging, so you can get the jump on the competition as you blast to the finish.

Staging beams Each lane uses two lasers to position the cars on the starting line, a process known as staging. The first beam is the pre-stage beam, which lets the driver know he or she is about to reach the stage beam. The lights at the top of the tree show the driver his position in the beams. If a driver passes through the stage beam before the green light at the start of the race, he “red lights” and is disqualified.

Reflectors The reflectors bounce the lasers back to the DTS-1 so it can register when a beam is open or broken.

Finish Line beams The Finish Line Console also has two lasers in each lane. The first laser is for the console’s speed trap function, which allows you to collect speed data using the optional Traxxas Link application. The second laser is the actual finish line. Taking it to the Next Level: DTS-1 and Traxxas Link Right out of the box, the DTS-1 duplicates NHRA Sportsman and Pro tree light sequences, dual-beam staging and tree lights, and determines the winner of each race with millisecond accuracy. When you control the DTS-1 with a Docking Base-equipped TQi transmitter and an iPhone or iPod touch, you can view and share reaction time, elapsed time, and dial-in times for bracket racing—all measured down to a thousandth of a second. You can even arrange full drag racing tournaments for up to 32 racers, each with their own custom-selected avatars.

Drag Racing: The Basics

N

HRA drag racing is simple in its broad strokes and fascinating in the details that make the difference between winning and losing—all of which are precisely duplicated by the DTS-1. With each race, the drivers must stage their cars, deliver the lowest possible reaction time, maintain traction, and achieve the highest possible speed on the way to the finish line. Let’s take a closer look at what goes into an NHRA drag race (some functions also require the Traxxas Link application, see “Taking it to the Next Level: DTS-1 and Traxxas Link”).

1 Staging Staging is the process of positioning the cars on the starting line. This is not merely a means of lining up two cars so they’re “even,” and there’s no waiting for each driver to give a “ready” signal before the race begins. As soon as one car pulls into the stage beams, the competition has begun. The second driver has just ten seconds to stage his car, or else be disqualified (DQ’d). There is also some wiggle room in the pre-stage and stage beams that can be used to help lower your reaction time (RT). That’s where staging strategy comes into play. All the techniques employed by the pros apply to the DTS-1.

2 Reaction Time (RT) The time it takes a driver to react to the tree’s green starting light is the driver’s reaction time, or RT. The RT clock starts when the tree’s last amber light flashes, and stops when your car leaves the stage beam. The tree’s green light signals the start of the race, but if you wait for the green light before pushing the pedal, your RT will suffer. There’s a delay in your own natural reaction time and the car’s reaction time as it spins the motor, transfers power to the wheels, overcomes inertia, then finally takes off. green will give you a slow RT. Ideally, your car should leave the stage beam at the very nanosecond the green light comes on, giving you an RT of 0.000. This is physiologically impossible, so you have to “cheat” by launching before the green light to compensate for your human reaction time and the car’s mechanical reaction time. With practice, you’ll learn to anticipate the green light and launch just before it, knowing it will take a certain, repeatable fraction of time for your body and car to react and accelerate. In the Pro Funny Car class, reaction times are typically 0.2-0.5 seconds. When you combine the DTS-1 with the Traxxas Link application, your RT is displayed with each run.

Winning With Reaction Time

I

f you have the better reaction time and get off the line quicker than your opponent, you essentially have a head start—maybe enough to beat your faster opponent to the finish line. Here’s an example: Your opponent has the hottest car on the track and crosses the finish line with an ET of 9 seconds. You can’t match his speed and post an ET of 10 seconds. You lose, right? Not just yet—let’s look at the reaction times. Your opponent was slow on the draw with an RT of three seconds. You’re on your game and blast out of the lights with a one-second RT. That puts your opponent two seconds behind you right from the start. Even though he put down an ET that was a second faster than yours, he left the starting line two seconds after you. That gives you the win by one second—even though you’ve got the slower car. We’re using round numbers for this example. In actual competition (full size and with DTS-1), a win can be determined by thousandths of a second. The Traxxas Link application displays RT and ET, making it easy to see how you won—or lost.

Drag racing with the DTS-1 and a Traxxas Funny Car is the most realistic-looking way to drag race, but a Funny Car is not required to go heads-up with your buddies. The competing cars don’t send or receive any data to or from DTS-1, so any vehicle that can roll through the DTS1’s laser beams is drag-race worthy. Slash 4X4 and the 1/10 scale Rally are great drag racers, and drag racing with nitro power adds an extra level of drag-racing realism. The cars shoot to the finish line with a high-rev scream, the engines burn nitro with that authentic drag-strip smell (of the nitro exhaust, not the corn dogs), and engine and clutch tuning can be exploited to earn an advantage over your opponent—just like full-size drag racing.

nce you try drag racing with the DTS-1, you’ll be hooked. Don’t be surprised when the entire day disappears as you and your friends keep making “one last run” to see who can stage strategically, make the cleanest launch, and reach the finish line first. Add Traxxas Link, and competition reaches a whole new level of precision, realism, and fun. The only difference between an NHRA race and racing with the DTS-1 is the size of the cars—and where you sit. At the full-size strip, you’re in the bleachers. When you race with the DTS-1, you’re behind the wheel.

Sportsman and Pro Tree Lights The NHRA’s main racing classes are Sportsman and Pro, and each has its own tree light sequence. The DTS-1 lets you choose either sequence, with Sportsman as the default setting. Sportsman Tree: Timing your launch is easiest with the Sportsman Tree (also known as a “full tree”). The Sportsman sequence flashes the lights count-down style, making it easier to anticipate the green light. The yellow lights flash in sequence, then the green light flashes to start the race. Flash-flash-flash-GO. Pro Tree: In a Pro Tree, the three yellow lights flash together, then the green comes on 4/10 of a second later. Flash-GO! Timing a launch with a low reaction time on the Pro Tree takes more skill—which is why it’s for the pros!

3 Elapsed Time (ET). The race timer starts as soon as the green light comes on, and stops when you reach the finish line. This is your elapsed time, or ET. If you have a lower ET than your opponent, you definitely have the faster car, but not necessarily the winning car. Your opponent can still beat you to the finish line, even if he has a slower car. The secret is reaction time.

Safety First

W

ith great power comes great responsibility. LiPo batteries are currently the most advanced battery on the planet, but they do require a few more precautions to ensure user safety and a long battery life. There are a few things you’ll need to know before you upgrade to the Power Cell 3S 5000mAh LiPo.

Charger. The Rally comes with a NiMH charger that will safely charge the included NiMH battery, but you can NEVER use this charger with LiPo batteries. A serious fire or explosion can occur. To safely charge LiPo battery packs, we recommend the 2-Cell & 3-Cell LiPo Balance Charger (part #2935, $29.99) or Traxxas EZ-Peak Plus (part #2933, $119.99). The EZ-Peak Plus will be the only RC charger you ever need, and can charge all current RC batteries safely and easily. Speed Control Settings. The Velineon System is compatible with all types of batteries, but LiPo batteries require different voltage cutoff thresholds. You MUST change the setting of the speed control to Low-Voltage Detection mode for LiPo batteries, which is explained in the owner’s manual. Failure to do this can allow the batteries to be permanently damaged due to overdischarging. ALWAYS CONSULT THE MANUAL. If you are ever unsure about a setting for battery charging or driving, you should always consult the owner’s manual. Traxxas provides online support with forums and downloadable instructions—and has amazing phone tech support.

TRX 3.3 Racing Engine. This awardwinning powerplant is the heart of the Nitro Slash. It’s a 2-stroke engine, and revs to 50,000RPM—compare that with the 7,000RPM redline of a Mustang GT, 9,000RPM of a Ferrari 458 Italia, or the 16,000RPM of a MotoGP race bike. That’s a lot of spin!

Tuned Pipe. In addition to letting exhaust out, the pipe’s unique shape is “tuned” to maximize engine power.

Aluminum Chassis. When tuned for maximum performance, a nitro engine heats up to over 250 degrees. That’s hot enough to soften a plastic chassis. o g Nitro 2-Stroke Power!

The Nitro Slash’s TRX 3.3 engine is a 3.3cc 2-stroke engine, meaning the piston only needs to go up (stroke one) and down (stroke two) once to make power. In addition to greater simplicity than a 4-stroke engine, a 2-stroke makes more power and revs higher than a 4-stroke of the same size. At its core, all the engine does is suck in fuel and air, ignite it, then pump it out as exhaust. These are the parts that make it happen:

Carburetor >> The carb combines the fuel and air that ignites inside the engine to drive the piston down and create power. To tune the engine for maximum performance, you adjust the amount of fuel in the mixture with the carburetor’s valves (see “Easy Engine Tuning”) for the details.

Piston, Sleeve, and Crankshaft >> The piston and crankshaft are the engine’s only moving parts. The piston slides up and down in the sleeve to rotate the crankshaft and power the Nitro Slash.

Tuned Exhaust Pipe >> After the fuel/ air mixture is burned and becomes exhaust, it exits the engine via the exhaust port. To prevent the fuel/air mixture from escaping through the exhaust port before combustion, a tuned pipe is used. The pipe is precisely shaped to reflect each pulse of exhaust pressure back to the exhaust port, preventing the mixture from escaping.

MASSIVE HORSEPOWER For those who want the most power, using the Traxxas Top Fuel 33% blend will unleash the full potential of the TRX 3.3 engine. Expect more wheelies, more roost, and more fun. We only recommend this blend to experienced tuners.

Nitro Percentage: How Much?

More nitro, more power. Top Fuel Power Plus is available with 10, 20, and 33% nitro. If more nitro means more power, why choose anything less than the 33% mix? The answer is budget. Nitromethane is the most expensive component in the fuel, and drives the cost. For most drivers, 10% and 20% blends will deliver more than enough muscle with easy tuning and long engine life. If you are running in competition, the 33% blend is optimized for the TRX 3.3 to extract maximum power. Higher percentages of nitro than 33% for the TRX 3.3 engine will create more heat without generating more power.

Press Button, Start Engine Glow Plug >> Think of this as a spark plug that’s always on. Once the engine is running, the plug stays hot to ignite the fuel/air mixture. To get it hot, electricity is passed through it, like an electric stove burner. The Nitro Slash’s EZ-Start electric starting system does this automatically.

Air Filter >> The precision parts of a nitro engine are very sensitive to dirt and dust. The foam air filter captures the grit so it doesn’t get into the carburetor, and the engine. The foam filter is oiled to catch the tiniest particles and prevent them from passing through the foam. Like all Traxxas nitro models, the Nitro Slash includes a bottle of air filter oil. 64 888.TRAXXAS

he Nitro Slash, and all nitropowered RC models (planes and boats, too) run on model fuel comprised of nitromethane, methanol, and oil—not gasoline. Nitro engines don’t have an oil-filled crankcase like a full-size car engine. Instead, the oil in the fuel lubricates and cools the engine. The nitromethane and methanol are what combust to create horsepower. For top performance and longest engine life, these ingredients must be top quality and properly mixed. How do you know? Miniature pull-starters (like on a lawnmower) are used to fire up most RC engines. Let’s just say that this is a less than ideal starting method. Kind of like crank-starting a Model-T. The Nitro Slash’s TRX 3.3 engine, like all Traxxas engines, features electric starting (like the car in your driveway, and every car made in the last 100 years). The EZ-Start system heats the glow plug and turns the crank shaft to get the engine fired up fast. The electricity to do the job comes from the included, battery-powered starter. Plug it into the port at the rear of the truck, press the start button, and the engine fires up in seconds. The EZ-Start is “smart” too, with unique circuitry that alerts you if the glow plug needs to be replaced, or if the engine is “flooded” by too much fuel in the cylinder. traxxas.com 65

the valve and increases the amount of fuel in the mixture. This is called richening the mixture, and a mixture with more fuel than ideal is said to be rich. “Lean” is the opposite of rich. Turning the needle valves clockwise closes the valve and decreases the amount of fuel in the mixture. This is called leaning the mixture, and a mixture with less fuel than ideal is said to be lean.

Break-In

What and Why

P

roper break-in is important to the performance and life of any engine—nitro or otherwise. During break-in, the engine's moving parts wear together to achieve a perfect fit. In a nitro engine, the most critical fit is between the piston and sleeve. When properly broken in, the piston completely seals the combustion chamber to keep the fuel/air mixture in the chamber and squeeze it with the highest possible compression. If you don't break in the engine and go straight to wide-open running, the piston and sleeve fit will be compromised, reducing power and engine life. Everything you need to know to break in the Nitro Slash's TRX 3.3 engine is in the manual, and it's easy. Remember that break-in is not the time to impress your friends.

Tuning Time Follow the instructions in the Nitro Slash’s manual to break in the engine first. After break-in, the engine is ready to be tuned for maximum performance. Warm up the engine before you start tuning. If you try to tune the engine while it’s ‘cold,’ the ideal carb settings will keep changing until the engine warms up.

Set the high-speed needle first. Fire up the truck and run it with the high-speed needle set rich. When rich, the engine will feel sluggish, or unburned fuel may spray from the exhaust pipe, or both. Make a full-throttle run, then lean the mixture (turn the needle clockwise) 1/16th of a turn, and repeat. The truck will accelerate more quickly and run faster with each 1/16th turn. When performance no longer improves, you’ve passed the correctlytuned setting. Richen the mixture (turn the valve counterclockwise) 1/16th at a time until you have optimum performance. Set the Low Speed Needle. Super easy. After dialing in the high-speed needle and making a few top-speed runs, pull the truck in and pinch the fuel line to cut off fuel flow. If the low-speed needle is set properly, the engine will speed up, then shut off within 2-3 seconds. If it takes longer, the low-speed needle is set too rich. If the engine shuts off immediately, it’s too lean. If it’s rich, lean it out 1/16th of a turn. If it’s lean, richen it up 1/8th of a turn. Make a few more speed runs and repeat the “pinch test” after each adjustment until you’ve got snappy engine response. Done.

Easy Engine Tuning Engine tuning is definitely the most misunderstood part of running a nitro truck, and the biggest misunderstanding is that it’s difficult. It’s not. Do you know right from left? Can you turn a screwdriver? You’re already halfway to becoming an engine-tuning pro. What to Adjust There are just two adjustments required to tune the engine: the high-speed needle valve and the lowspeed needle valve (also known simply as ‘needles’). The needles are threaded in or out of the carburetor to adjust the amount of fuel in the fuel/air mixture. 66 888.TRAXXAS

Telemetry Expander with GPS Option With a new Telemetry Expander now available from Traxxas that includes a powerful communication cable and a series of plug-and-play smart sensors, installation and operation of the telemetry system using Traxxas Link becomes almost effortless. Traxxas Link recognizes the smart sensors automatically. No parts have to be replaced or swapped—setup only takes a few minutes! Install the Expander, plug in the communication cable and sensors, replace and seal all covers, and prepare to be amazed! There are currently three smart sensors available with the Telemetry Expander. The voltage smart sensor can be used to measure the voltage of the electronic speed control (ESC) for your electric vehicle or the receiver battery pack voltage for your Nitro vehicle. The temperature smart sensor can be used to measure the temperature of the motor/engine, battery, ESC, or any other chosen vehicle component—it can even measure air temperature! The third smart sensor is the GPS module, which will capture and display the vehicle speed. Once the GPS is installed, the speedometer reverts to the GPS speed instead of estimating the MPH based on gearing and motor RPM! Nothing has to be reset to start reporting and recording speed; just select the gauge that you want to be displayed and you’re all set.

ll Traxxas models are sold Ready-To-Race.® That means all the assembly has been done for you, the body has been painted, and the tires are glued to the wheels. Traxxas models include premium running accessories required for each model. Electrics come with Power Cell battery packs, and most even include the charger. Nitro-powered models have a battery and charger (for the EZ-Start electric starting system), fuel dispensing bottle, and an extra glow plug and air filter. All that’s left for you to buy are AA alkaline batteries for the radio system. If you have a nitro-powered model, you’ll also need fuel (available where Traxxas models are sold). You’ll be ready for high-performance driving fun in minutes, not hours or days. In addition to convenience, factory assembly means you know your model is built right and is ready to perform its best. And to make sure you know your new Traxxas vehicle inside and out, Traxxas creates the most comprehensive instruction manuals in the business.

raxxas models are offered with both electric and nitro (engine) power systems. Electric cars are powered by an electric motor and an on-board battery pack. The benefits of electric power include clean, quiet operation and are virtually maintenance free. A nitropowered car is equipped with a fuel-burning, 2-stroke engine. Nitro cars are almost as fast as electric cars, but they require more maintenance and cost a little more than electrics. All Traxxas nitro cars feature our EZ-Start® system, which starts the engine quickly and simply with the press of a single button. No other starting system is easier or safer.

RC cars use specialized rechargeable battery packs. The important things to consider in a battery are its voltage and capacity. Sounds high-tech, but it’s simple:

7-cell Voltage: The more voltage a 8.4 volts battery has, the faster your car will go. The most popular batteries use 6 cells and have 7.2 volts. Battery capacity determines run time; the greater the capacity, the longer your model will run. The larger the number, the higher the capacity.

Most Traxxas models with batteries include simple plug-in wall chargers. For faster charging, you can upgrade to a “peak charger,” such as the Traxxas EZ-Peak 5amp (available from your hobby dealer). Don’t settle for a “timed” or “mechanical” charger. A peak-detecting charger will detect when the battery has reached maximum capacity, and automatically stop charging.

What kind of fuel do nitro RC cars use?

Starting Made Simple

“Nitro” cars get their name from the type of fuel they use: a combination of alcohol, nitromethane, and oil. In addition to powering the engine, the fuel is also the engine’s lubricant—that’s why it contains oil. Although sometimes referred to as “gas” cars, gasoline should NEVER be used in a model engine.

Chemistry Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries are the durable, workhorse batteries of RC. Inexpensive and simple to charge, they endure a lot of punishment and come back for more. Lithium Polymer batteries (LiPo) offer the benefits of higher voltage, higher current output, and greater capacity but they require more care to prevent over-discharging, and you must use special chargers made specifically to charge LiPo cells. The reward for the little extra attention is more speed and more run-time.

Myth: Higher capacity batteries will make my model faster

Capacity is measured in milliamp hours (mAh). Think of it as the size of the battery fuel tank. The bigger the fuel tank (higher mAh rating), the longer the model will run.

Truth: For most drivers, higher capacity numbers do not mean your model will be faster. In some cases acceleration can actually decrease due to the extra weight of the higher capacity battery.

2S and 3S

Myth: Balancing cell voltage is not that critical

Just like NiMH battery packs, typical LiPo battery packs are made of individual cells that are wired together in either series (to increase voltage) or parallel (to increase capacity). A pack with 2 cells is a 2S battery, and a pack with 3 cells is a 3S battery. A 2S battery has 7.4 volts, and a 3S battery has 11.1 volts. If your vehicle or speed control is rated for “6S” and has two battery plugs (such as the E-Revo Brushless Edition), you can plug two 3S packs into it for a total of 6S (11.1 volts x 2). Two 2S packs would be 4S (7.4 volts X 2).

Truth: Balancing cell voltage is very important since most low voltage detection is done as an average of the total battery pack, if one cell of a multi-cell pack is not fully charged, it may become over discharged (and damaged) before low voltage detection kicks in. The Traxxas EZ-Peak Plus has a very precise balancing circuit to prevent this from happening.

C-Rating C is short for capacity. The load a battery can sustain is indicated as a multiple of capacity. For example, a load of 1C for a 7600mah battery is 7600 milliamps or 7.6 amps. A 2C load would be double the capacity; 15.2 amps (7.6 x 2 = 15.2). All Traxxas LiPo batteries are rated for 25C. For our example of a 7600mah pack, that would be 7.6 x 25 = 190 amps. How much amperage can be used to charge a battery may also be indicated as a “C” value. All Traxxas Power Cell LiPo batteries have a recommended charge rate of 1C, and a maximum charge rate of 2C. For maximum performance and longevity, charge at 1C whenever possible. For example, a 1C charge rate for the 7600mah Power Cell LiPo would be 7.6 amps. A 2C charge rate for the same battery would be 15.2. An important note about C-Rating: Each battery manufacturer has their own formula and methodology for determining the C-Rating they assign to their LiPo batteries. For example, a Traxxas 25C battery evaluated using another brand’s method of calculating C-Rating might demonstrate a 50C rating. For this reason, you should not compare batteries from different manufacturers by their C-Ratings alone.

Myth: Higher C-ratings will make my model faster. Truth: Most drivers will not see more speed from just the C-rating alone, especially if the other features of the pack are built to average standards to keep the packs advertised as high C-rate packs from costing too much. The best performance and speed comes from optimizing the chemistry, construction, and C-rating for the intended use. Traxxas engineers have the equipment and expertise to build the ultimate recipes for performance using all the ingredients. Traxxas 25C batteries are known to outperform competitor’s supposed “performance” battery packs with higher advertised specifications.

ey Race Fans, Keli Snyder here with another edition of “Keli’s Corner”. With a year under my belt, and more than enough changes in my life to star in my very own reality TV show, I’d say this has been one whirlwind of a race season.

Growing up around motorsports, racing became more than a passing fad in my life. With a family who not only worked in the automotive industry, but also was heavily involved in the world of racing, it’s safe to say that that kind of daily influence led me to a life full of racing. My family of four was quite normal, consisting of a mom and dad, and a younger sister, Taylor. What I’d credit for keeping our household a happy one was the motto we lived by daily in our house, “A family who races together...stays together.” Let me start by saying, my poor dad. Without any sons to share his racing obsession with, he decided the next best thing to do would be to turn his two little ballerinas into RC car driving, oil changing, horsepower loving girls. Somewhere around the ages of 12 and 15, as we groomed and watered down the 110 x 75-foot RC car track in our backyard, my sister and I realized our dad’s need for speed and anything related to racing had officially rubbed off on us. We were hooked! When I took the job as the official Traxxas spokesperson in 2012, my younger sister was working towards her goal of becoming a short course off-road racer. But in no time, Taylor realized her attraction to the radio control industry was more than just that of an enthusiast. She decided then and there that she too needed to pursue her passion for radio control: becoming the lead “Traxxas Girl” at every motorsports event where we activate, as well as taking over the overwhelming duty of all Traxxas social media. Her product knowledge, skill level with the vehicles, and her understanding of the sports we sponsor made her the perfect addition to the Traxxas team. It’s a unique thing to find a female so engulfed in such a male-dominated industry. From broadcasting, to racing, or even just a female race fan that loves the smell of nitrous race fuel and burnt tire rubber, it’s a rare find. But to find two sisters so involved in the world of motorsports like Taylor and me, that seemed almost impossible... until we met the Force family. Fifteen time NHRA Funny Car champion, John Force, didn’t give his family much of an option when it came to racing and living life on the road. Needless to say, the Force family grew up together at the track every weekend, much like Taylor and me. So when it came to racing and family time combined as one, we realized how much we had in common with Courtney and Brittany Force. Racing the entire NHRA season together, Courtney and Brittney have enjoyed the opportunity to spend every day on the road together. “Getting to travel race to race with Brittany, talk to each other, and get advice from each other after a run is always helpful. It makes me feel comfortable knowing that my sister is out here going through the same obstacles as me during a race weekend,” said Courtney. “We have busy schedules but keep it fun and exciting, and we are always motivating each other during a race weekend.” With Brittany competing in her rookie season in her Castrol Edge Top Fuel Dragster, she was faced with many of the same pressures and problems Courtney dealt with last year in her Traxxas Nitro funny car rookie season. “I do my best to give her any advice she needs, and try to be there for her when she has any questions about staging, driving, pedaling or how to keep things organized with appearances and interviews,” says Courtney. “It’s great to know that we both have each other for a shoulder to lean on when times get tough, as well as a best friend to celebrate with during the good times and the wins! Both sisters will tell you their favorite part of the job is the fact that they get to enjoy what they love to do with their loved ones everyday. “My family is full of drag racers, so I have the best teachers around me, and couldn’t ask for anything more,” Brittany said. “The race track became my second home, and the people involved became my second family.” What I find most relatable to both Taylor and me when it comes to the Force sisters’ relationship on and off the track is their plan to continue growing as an unstoppable sister duo in the racing community. As my passion for motorsports and racing only continues to grow, I’m really able to look back and realize how lucky both Taylor and I am to have found a new family and new “sisters” at the track.
