Latin 110: Beginning Latin I Fall Semester 2013 Syllabus • Time and place: MWF, 10:00–10:50, Arter 213. • Instructor: Judson Herrman, [email protected]. Office hours: every day (when classes are in session) 11:00–12:15 in Ruter 304. • Description: this course, together with its continuation in Spring (Latin 120), presents all of the basic grammar of classical Latin. Our primary goals are understanding of syntax and learning of vocabulary, but we will occasionally read excerpts of Roman prose and poetry and consider the cultural background. We will work through the textbook units, paying as much attention as possible to the readings at the end of each unit. Daily homework will be assigned. Attendance of all meetings is expected. You will be penalized for unexcused absences. • Website: . • Textbook: A. Keller and S. Chapter 2, morph./syntax quiz: fully conjugate the present, imperfect, or future active indicative tense of 1st and 2nd conjugation verbs, and sum/possum; translate short sentences from and into Latin. Chapter 8, either selected readings from the end of the unit or an optional morph./syntax quiz (fully decline a noun phrase that may include demonstratives, fourth- and fifth-declension nouns, and third-declension adjectives; translate deponents and new case usages.) Final exam at 9:00AM, with the following sections: (1) verb synopsis, (2) fill in missing principal parts, (3) decline a noun phrase with nouns, adjectives and demonstratives, (3) translation sentences, loosely based on the drill sentences from the end of each chapter. The exam will be roughly twice as long as the end-of-chapter quizzes, which should allow a comfortable amount of time to work on it.
