Welcome to LiteracyCounts We also offer bespoke support and training so that you get the very best support contextualised to your needs. Talk to us about a menu of support we can offer. Our national advisers and reading and writing specialists can support through a variety of ways and for a variety of purposes. Our advisers have worked nationally across regions and between schools locally. This helps us offer a national perspective at a local level. For example, we are also working on national projects such as The Primary Writing Project with John Stannard (CBE) and Pie Corbett and have co written national interventions for reading support at both Wave 2 and Wave 3 alongside Edge Hill University and the National Literacy Trust. Don’t forget at Literacy Counts our team will happily model aspects of teaching and learning and work alongside your practitioners in your classrooms at your schools.

The TeamCounts Gareth Davies National Adviser, Consultant & Trainer

Gareth is passionate about quality learning experiences for all children and has a proven track record of improving outcomes for children and has made notable contributions to school improvement, nationally, locally and within and across schools in both England and Wales. He is presently working with Pie Corbett and John Stannard (OBE) on the EEF’s Primary Writing Project; helping to implement a structured programme that trains and coaches teachers and leadership teams on the effective teaching of writing. Within his role as National Strategies Adviser for Language & Literacy, he delivered contextualised, pertinent and quality training to a broad range of national audiences. It was within this role, he designed and wrote a range of published supporting materials around the development of literacy and language. More recently, he has become an accredited Every Child Counts National Adviser with Edge Hill University and has co-authored Reading interventions. This year he is also working on the Exploring Boys’ Literacy Project with the National Literacy Trust.

Rebecca Bell Associate National Adviser, Consultant & Trainer

Rebecca is committed to nurturing the creative potential in both adults and young people, and is involved in managing and delivering Continuing Professional Development programmes for Local Authorities and inspiring school improvement. She uses a narrative immersion approach into her work as a consultant teacher, creative practitioner and trainer in primary and secondary schools across the UK and internationally. Rebecca is committed to promoting creative enquiry led learning as a qualified facilitator of P4C (Philosophy for Children). Rebecca has qualified as a certified Trainer of Trainers (CIEH), and more recently as an accredited Action Learning Facilitator (ILM) and accredited Relational Dynamic Coach. Over the years Rebecca has developed a reputation for designing and delivering innovative projects and action research aimed at increasing learning opportunities for learners in any setting.

Ruth Dollner Associate National Adviser, Consultant & Trainer

Ruth is a practising Lead Ofsted Inspector and has worked in Primary education for over twenty five years. She began her career as a Primary teacher working in three inner London local authorities. After substantial experience as a Senior Leader in a large primary school, Ruth became an English Advisory teacher and then Literacy Consultant, responsible for supporting schools in launching the National Literacy Strategy. Ruth has been a Senior School Improvement Officer, an accredited School Improvement Provider and was a Regional Adviser for the National Strategies. Ruth is also a National Adviser for Edge Hill Every Child Counts Literacy programmes and she is the English National Representative for the European Learning Teacher Network.

James presently works for the BBC specialising in Web Programming. He was brought in to help manage the Literacy Counts website in January 2015 after gaining his MSc from the University of Chester. TEACHING ASSISTANT COUNTS Subject Skills And Knowledge For Teaching Assistants: Reading and Phonics & Addition and Subtraction

Outline: This course will support Teaching Assistants in their understanding of skills and strategies that support both decoding and language comprehension. They will develop their knowledge and confidence to successfully support the teaching of reading. This training will reflect all seven components of reading; fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, phonological awareness, phonics, spelling and tricky words. It is aligned to the new Standards for Teaching Assistants and National Curriculum for English. Teaching Assistants will look at the effective use of models and images to support children within developing their understanding of mathematics in class and as part of an intervention. We will use a range of everyday resources to support with this, including some innovative activities using Numicon. Teaching Assistants will look at a suggested progression in addition and subtraction and how to support children’s understanding within each strand.

Subject Skills and Knowledge for Teaching Assistants: Writing & Multiplication and Division Outline: This course will support Teaching Assistants in their understanding of skills and strategies that support both transcription and composition in writing. It is aligned to the new Standards for Teaching Assistants and National Curriculum for English. Teaching Assistants will develop their knowledge and confidence to successfully support the teaching of writing. Teaching Assistants will further explore the effective use of models and images, in particular those that can be used to support children’s understanding of multiplication and division. We will consider how to best support children through the use of clear steps to success that can be provided alongside teachers’ input and as part of an

TEACHING ASSISTANT COUNTS Phonics Essentials: Subject Skills And Knowledge For Teaching Assistants Outline: This training will support Teaching Assistants with the teaching of phonics. It is designed to help Teaching Assistants capitalize on the opportunities children have in the application of using phonics skills and knowledge in both reading and writing and across the curriculum. It is this transference of skills that is essential for purposeful phonics as part of a broad and balanced rich language curriculum. It is aligned to the new Standards for Teaching Assistants and National Curriculum for English.

INTERVENTION COUNTS Better Reading Support Partners: Official And Updated. Supporting Struggling Readers From Year 1 To Year 10

Working with

Outline: Better Reading Support Partners is an effective Wave 2 Every Child Counts reading intervention for pupils in Years 1 to 10. It raises the attainment of children who can read but who lack fluency, understanding and enjoyment and may need support with decoding skills, vocabulary and/or comprehension. It is for children in KS1 who have fallen slightly below the level of their peers and for children in KS2-3 whose reading age is below their chronological age. It helps them to: • decode the words on a page

• understand what they are reading

• read with greater pace and fluency

• confidently access a wider range of reading material

• develop independent reading skills

• enjoy and develop a long-lasting enthusiasm for reading.

BRSP has a compelling history of impacting on children’s development and provides a balanced approach to developing phonic skills, comprehension and an enjoyment of reading. This is a 2 day course which is run by our accredited Edge Hill University Every Child Counts National Adviser. BRSP trials showed that after only seventeen 15 minute sessions pupils made: • an average Reading Age gain of 11.2 months (over six times the expected rate of progress) • an average Comprehension Age gain of 9.8 months (over five times the expected rate of progress)

Audience: This is a 2 day Teaching Assistant training for both High School and Primary Schools. NB: A member of the SLT (who is the BRSP Co-ordinator) is advised to accompany the TA for the first half day to set the intervention in the context of school improvement. The SLT member manages the partnership in school and acts as the main link with the school’s senior leadership team, class teachers and parents. Ideally, the Co-ordinator would be the Interventional Managers, Senior Leaders, SENDCO or Headteacher. The cost of a senior Leader to attend the first half day is £85.

INTERVENTION COUNTS 1st Class@Writing: Motivating And Equipping Pupils To Write Confidently And Independently

Outline: 1stClass@Writing is a new, highly motivating and effective intervention for pupils mainly in Years 3 to 5 who have fallen behind at writing. A trained teaching assistant helps them to make faster progress so that they can catch up with their peers. 1stClass@Writing is an Every Child Counts intervention, developed by Edge Hill University. Expert training enables teaching assistants to deliver it effectively and to strengthen their support for writing across the school. There are two versions: 1stClass@Writing: The Pirate Writing Crew for pupils who need support to access Year 3 expectations. 1stClass@Writing: Dragon Hunters for pupils who need support to access Year 4 expectations. • Strengthens a love of words and language, breadth and depth of vocabulary • Increases concentration, perseverance, and talk, and strengthens metacognition • Emphases the process of writing from planning, composing, changing your mind (revising), to checking (editing) • Develops a fluent hand and correct formation of letters for fluency, consistency and legibility • Builds a range of strategies for accurate spelling, including phonemic, morphological, visual and auditory • Teaches grammar in context to develop understanding of grammatical structure, sentence construction and text cohesion and the typical conventions of common text types. • Extends Teaching Assistants’ subject knowledge and expertise Who is it for? KS2 Pupils that need support to access Year 3 & Year 4 National Curriculum expectations who: • have already had some success with their writing • struggle to have ideas or communicate these effectively in writing • may have spelling and / or handwriting difficulties that create barriers to writing • may be later-stage learners of English as an additional language How does it work? A teaching assistant delivers 48 stimulating and motivating half-hour lessons to a group of up to 4 pupils, 4 times a week, in addition to their daily class lessons. The pupils develop key skills of spelling, handwriting, grammar, and punctuation in order to complete daily writing tasks bound up with the thematic adventure stories. • Led by a trained Teaching Assistant • 4 structured small-group sessions a week for 12 weeks • Detailed session plans and comprehensive resources • Three days of high-quality training for the Teaching Assistant and one for a school link teacher It all comes ‘ready-made’ with detailed plans and comprehensive resources. The TA is supported by a senior teacher in the school who acts as a Link Teacher.

Outline: This Outstanding Literacy Leadership proffesional development examines the national issue of the gender gap in literacy attainment and enables primary schools to find specific, effective solutions relevant to their school. • Training takes place over a number of days spread across at least one term. • There is time to test new approaches and gather valuable evidence. • Clusters of schools jointly commission the offer. Additional benefits • One year’s FREE membership of the National Literacy Trust network per school (worth £100) • A senior leader (e.g. head or deputy) receives an additional FREE place at the first session • The lead or teaching school that co-ordinates and hosts the training receives one FREE place.
