Leadership Development Series Member Library Directors have been MHLS invited to participate in a unique opportunity a custom designed Leadership Development Series offered through the MHLS Building Your Base From the Inside Out Project. This workshop series will provide the opportunity for member library directors to focus time, attention and energy on the acquisition or enhancement of advocacy leadership skills. Directors will join national library expert Sandra Nelson as she facilitates this leadership development series for directors, designed to address the obstacles that inhibit people and organizations from realizing their goals while enhancing abilities that will allow directors to achieve measurable and sustainable results. The OCLC research-based report From Awareness to Funding: A study of library support in America found that “library funding support is an attitude,” and that “perceptions of the librarian are highly related to support.” From the invitation to directors: “Raising your self-awareness of how you are perceived as a leader inside your organization is directly tied to how you are perceived out in the community. If you are not demonstrating passionate leadership as a director, you are unlikely to achieve the “passionate librarian” status identified in the OCLC report that leads to funding support from the community. This series is devoted to helping library directors work on their ability to lead efforts in the library towards the end of achieving sustainable funding. Thinking about advocacy leadership “from the inside out” can help directors motivate and mobilize staff, trustees and Friends so everyone is moving forward together when pursuing a sustainable

funding campaign or other advocacy efforts. The ultimate goal of this series is to aid directors in increasing a library’s chance of success in building support for the library starting inside the organization before going out into in the community.”

Over the course of the series, participants will work on a project of their choosing that will directly impact a self-identified goal. Project areas directors will choose from: … … … …

Making the Case, Inspiring Action Board-Director Relations: Leading Together Collaborative Goal Setting: Management of Priorities, Resources and Timelines Internal Communication Network: Getting Everyone on the Same Page (director-board-staff-Friends)

At the end of this workshop series participants will be able to: • • •

Inspire a shared vision at the library. Foster collaboration in the organization towards a common goal Cultivate a reputation as a ‘passionate librarian,’ as defined by the OCLC report, in the library and beyond.

This series includes: •

MHLS Announcements Are You Ready for Summertime Power Outages?: Summertime heat can overload the power grid and thunderstorms with high winds can bring down power lines so make sure your library is ready! > Until after October 8*, if the power goes down in Poughkeepsie and you cannot use Millennium at your library you will want to be prepared to use “offline circulation” which enables you to capture check out data electronically and upload it to the server at MHLS when the power comes back on. Make sure you have downloaded the most recent release of OCIRC and staff is familiar with using it: http://midhudson.org/resource/millennium/offline/offline.htm *Next summer this won’t be an issue! MHLS is planning to migrate the Millennium server “to the cloud” October 2012 so local power outages will not interrupt service in member libraries!

>If the power goes out at your library make sure staff are familiar with the location of flashlights in the building (When’s the last time you checked the batteries? Do you check your emergency lights monthly?) and appropriate procedures for helping patrons and staff to safely evacuate the building. A checklist for bringing your technology back online once power is restored is a good way to spot if anything got fried! >If there is an extended power outage in your town, like many towns experienced after Hurricane Irene, library buildings may find themselves one of the only area facilities with power. After the hurricane last year some libraries experienced an influx of community members looking for a place to charge up devices, a substitute home office and a working bathroom. Be prepared with extra power strips, toilet paper and training for staff to help people find information about insurance claims and who to call for home repairs!
