BLI RECOMMENDATION A stellar performer throughout testing, the Lexmark MX611dhe earned ratings of very good or excellent in nearly every aspect of its evaluation. The legal-size laser printer MFP is built on the Lexmark embedded Solutions Framework (eSF) platform, which enables organizations to expand functionality with time- and money-saving software developed by the manufacturer and third parties. Also critical in today’s business world is support for mobile printing, while the customizable Lexmark e-Task interface, with a new flash-enhanced menu system, makes programming jobs at the control panel easy, especially for scanning. The unit includes “green” measures such as standard automatic duplexing to reduce paper waste and tonersave mode to extend the life of the cartridge, and a high RAM capacity and the 160+-GB hard drive aid in job processing. What’s more, the Lexmark MX611dhe offers very good overall print quality and productivity. Although cost per page is higher than average, the unit’s low purchase price counteracts this, and its many strengths and strong performance make it a very good value. BLI highly recommends the Lexmark MX611dhe for environments with monthly print volumes of up to 12,000 impressions.

BuyersLab.com

Test duration: Two months, including a 75,000-impression durability test. Maximum monthly duty cycle: 150,000 impressions. Manufacturer’s recommended monthly volume: 2,000 to 15,000 impressions. BLI’s recommended monthly volume for optimum performance: Up to 12,000 impressions. More information on the Lexmark MX611dhe is available through bliQ (www.buyerslab.com/bliQ).

MULTITASKING

VERY GOOD

 The queue for the Lexmark MX611dhe can hold up to five print jobs; the unit downloads the next print job from the network queue once the first one is complete. Jobs are processed on a first-in, first-out basis; priority mode can’t be changed.  Copy jobs can be reserved to memory capacity.  No button needs to be pressed to reserve the next copy job. ADMINISTRATIVE UTILITIES

VERY GOOD

The embedded web server allows administrators to easily change device settings and some security protocols; view several types of reports, including those about usage, consumables, and a list of the programmed shortcuts; and manage the address book, among many other things. Information on the Links & Index tab (above) is alphabetized under two headers.

Markvision Enterprise discovers and delivers information on Lexmark and compatible devices. The fleet management utility takes a roles-based approach to device management, with four main tabs along the top designed to give administrators and other types of users quick access to the data and tools they need, and it employs a web search/bookmark model.

 A noteworthy feature of Markvision Enterprise is that if a device is set to duplex by default, the utility will show when that device has been put in simplex mode—and can even be set to bring the device back into compliance automatically. And in the latest version of Markvision Enterprise, administrators can limit or prohibit color usage, even for scanning. BLI evaluated the utility for a Solutions Test Report and found it to be flexible and effective.

FEEDBACK TO WORKSTATIONS

EXCELLENT

 Status Messenger, the feedback utility, provides pop-up messages for warnings and errors, including when consumables or paper have been depleted, or if a misfeed has occurred. Print job completion notification pop-ups aren’t provided, which is common among competitive devices. Color changes to the icon on the taskbar also show when device status has changed. — The list of warnings and errors for pop-ups and icon alerts can’t be altered as it’s preconfigured.

Users can click on the pop-up to access the Error Recovery Guide, which provides help for the current condition and allows users to search for information on a variety of topics.  Status Monitor Center provides another place where users can view device and consumables status, paper levels, and information about the maintenance kit and the drum. Lexmark Printer Home has similar capabilities and provides supplies information on the Maintenance tab. Both utilities reside on the desktop so users don’t have to know the IP address to access the embedded web server.

Users can obtain device and consumables status via the embedded web server (above) or Markvision Enterprise. Remaining toner is represented in an approximate-percent gauge while paper supply is indicated by OK, Low or Missing. The remaining life of the maintenance kit is displayed in text, with a precise percent, as is that for the drum.  Administrators can configure email alerts, via the embedded web server or Markvision Enterprise, to be sent to designated personnel when errors occur. Two lists of recipients can be maintained.  Programmable via the embedded web server, the unit can be set to beep when a cartridge is low or empty.

EASE OF NETWORK SETUP

VERY GOOD

 Physical setup of the unit is straightforward. Due to size and weight concerns, the manufacturer recommends at least two people lift the unit out of the box and place it in the desired location. Packaging materials aren’t excessive. The integrated duplex unit and the network card are preinstalled.  The starter cartridge (rated yield, 7,500 pages) is preinstalled and doesn’t require any protective seals to be removed.  It takes 10 clicks to install the PCL driver, Status Messenger, Status Monitor Center and ABBYY FineReader Sprint; the user guide is also “installed.”  During installation, the port is created, the IP address is assigned, and the driver detects optional accessories, all automatically.

 The Remote Install option lets administrators create an installation package and push it to users’ PCs one at a time.  One-to-one and one-to-many cloning, which greatly simplifies setup in larger environments, is achieved through the embedded web server and Markvision Enterprise, respectively. Note that cloning can only be done within the same device family.  Markvision Enterprise and PostScript emulation are available as free downloads on Lexmark’s website. Both require separate installations.

PRINT DRIVERS

VERY GOOD

 The unit ships with a Lexmark PCL XL Universal Print Driver, which is compatible with various Windows and Mac operating systems, as well as Linux, UNIX, Citrix MetaFrame, and Novell. PostScript 3 emulation is available as a download on Lexmark’s website.

The PCL driver has a mix of graphics and text that make navigation easy. Users can select quantity, duplex and orientation on the main screen, but paper size is found on the second tab.  Graphical changes indicate when specific features such as duplex or quality mode have been selected.  Any features offered in the driver that have “green” properties are indicated with a leaf icon.  Toner-save mode helps extend the life of the cartridge and can contribute to a lower TCO.

APPLICATIONS COMPATIBILITY

EXCELLENT

 No problems were experienced with any of the files used in the applications compatibility tests. Units are tested for compatibility on a Windows 2000 platform with Microsoft Word 2000, PowerPoint 2000 and Excel 2000, as well as Adobe PageMaker 7.0, Photoshop 6.0 and Acrobat 8.0, using 25 application test files that contain text, graphics, halftone images, tables, etc. that enable BLI technicians to evaluate memory usage, file processing, font rendering and grayscale capability.

SCAN FUNCTIONS

VERY GOOD

 Users can scan files in color or black to email, network folders via FTP and SMB, the hard drive or a URL at various resolutions up to 300 dpi at the control panel (600 dpi via scan profiles). Supported formats include JPEG, regular or secure PDF, TIFF, and XPS. TWAIN scanning is supported.  Scan to USB is standard. Once the stick is inserted, the main screen of the display brings up a USB option, from which users can select the same settings as for scan to email or network folders.  The unit is equipped with a legal-size platen.

Lexmark Printer Home (above) and the embedded web server let users configure profiles so they can scan anywhere—local or network folder—that’s accessible from their respective desktop.

 Scan profiles allow users to make some image quality selections and adjustments.  While the unit supports LDAP, which means users can quickly find destinations at the control panel, entering email addresses on the display’s QWERTY keypad is easy. The keys are responsive and of average size, and dedicated keys for “@,” “.com” and “.org” help greatly. What’s more, users can program shortcuts via the embedded web server to simplify scanning. — While tested scan speeds in color and black simplex modes are competitive compared with legal-size monochrome laser/LED printer MFPs in this class, those in both duplex modes are slower than average.  Scanned JPEG and PDF files are compressed by default.  Optional Lexmark Scan to Network Premium allows users to capture and route files, and includes advanced imaging, indexing and notification features.  Standard ABBYY FineReader Sprint provides OCR capability.

BLI’s job stream includes Word documents, Outlook email messages, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint, HTML and Acrobat PDF files, totaling 19 pages. This test simulates the type of traffic a typical device might experience in a real-world, multi-user environment. All of the files are sent to the device as a group, at which time the stopwatch begins; timing ends when the last page of the last file exits the device. Job stream efficiency is determined by the percentage of the rated speed at which the device operates when producing real-world jobs. The closer the rate is to 100%, or if it exceeds 100%, the more efficient the device.

Efficiency is tested using a 10-page black document. BLI obtains the overall efficiency for each mode by averaging the efficiency ratings (derived by dividing the tested speed of the device by the rated speed and then multiplying by 100) for each run length (1, 5, 10 and 20 sets).

EASE OF USE

VERY GOOD

The unit is equipped with the e-Task interface, a customizable full-color touch-screen display.  Navigation of the new flash-enhanced menu system, along with graphics and text, make programming jobs a breeze. Users can access toner and drum status on the LCD. The Help button provides assistance—should it be required—listed by function or in index form. Several hard keys, including a numeric keypad, and LEDs for status and when the unit is in sleep mode, are on the control panel, which can be tilted in two angles or sit flush with the unit.  Adjusting the drawers for different-size paper is simple. Tabs must be pressed to move the length (not removable) and width (slide in sync) guides, while users unlock the blue button at the back of a drawer and draw out to accommodate legal-size media. And with no corner separators, spring-loaded ramps or anything else to make the process troublesome, loading paper is a snap.  Users must change paper size by moving through the menu on the display.  While clearing misfeeds from the document feeder is simple, doing so when the jam is accessed in the front requires users to remove the cartridge and, possibly, the drum. A graphical depiction of the unit and text instructions are brought up automatically; users can press the Next button to see the ensuing direction. — If the unit is positioned against a wall and a jam happens in either of the rear misfeed access areas, users will have to turn the unit around to clear them, which could be cumbersome.  Replacing toner is clean. Users simply press the button on the right side of the unit to open the front cover and then pull out the spent cartridge. Instructions on the display

FEATURE SET

EXCELLENT

 The unit is equipped with Lexmark embedded Solutions Framework (eSF), which allows administrators to download solutions developed by the manufacturer and third parties, and run the applications on the display—a key selling point. Open architecture enables organizations to deploy software with far-reaching effects, be they with productivity, security or document management.  Preinstalled solutions such as Card Copy (captures both sides of an ID card and output them on a single side of paper) and Forms and Favorites (an archive for frequently used files) help businesses save time and money.  The unit supports mobile printing from devices that can run applications, including smartphones and tablets.  Standard automatic duplexing contributes to less paper waste.  Eco-Mode reduces power consumption, according to Lexmark, by turning off the control panel’s backlight and forcing the unit to go into sleep mode after 1 minute of inactivity.  Quiet Mode reduces noise emissions. BLI found that when the noise level decreased, so too did print speed.  Selectable from the Utilities menu on the display, Lexmark Coverage Estimator utilizes an algorithm to count pixels in the composite page and then estimates the percent coverage. When enabled, the tool prints the estimate directly on the document, allowing users to determine the amount of toner on any given page, even in complex images.  Print from USB is standard and works really well. The port is on the ride side of the front of the unit, which auto-discovers the stick and allows users to browse folders and view thumbnails of files (can see all pages and select different ranges to output). JPEG, PDF, TIFF and XPS files are supported.  The process for building a job that contains more pages than the RADF can hold is simple. For different page ranges, users can scan pages from the document feeder and/ or the platen, and make image quality setting changes—a useful feature that most competitive devices lack.  Standard (1 GB) and maximum (3 GB) RAM capacities are above average and among the highest, respectively, compared with legal-size monochrome laser/LED printer MFPs in this class.

 The unit comes with a 160+-GB hard drive.  Standard and maximum paper capacities of 650 and 2,300 sheets, respectively, are competitive. Both figures include the bypass, which has a competitive capacity of 100 sheets.  Media handling from the drawers and bypass, as up to 32-lb. bond and 90-lb. index, respectively, are competitive.  The unit can accommodate a range of envelope types, as well as A4, A5 and A6 paper, transparencies, and others.  The standard RADF has a competitive capacity of 50 sheets.  While a handful of devices in this class come with a finisher, the unit is one of several in the group that offers an optional finisher, which has an output capacity of 250 sheets and can staple up to 20 sheets in one position.  An optional wireless interface is available.  A one-year, next-business-day, onsite service warranty is included.
