Learning by doing The Ventil Valve Academy In summer 2013, Ventil Test Equipment, a manufacturer of pressure test equipment for industrial safety, shutoff and control valves, started a programme which helps industry experts to learn more about valves, about the importance of valves in the process industry and the inevitable maintenance and repair work. The programme is called the Ventil Valve Academy and Mr. Adri Visker from Ventil is the brains behind it. This article takes a look behind the scenes and shows some details about this project and what the advantages can be for the valve industry.

Industrial valves and safety valves are final process elements and play a key role in the operation of a continuous (petro)chemical process or power plant. They block the pressure, regulate the fluid or protect the processing plant. 50 to 60% of fugitive emissions from industrial process plants is still caused by leaking valves. It is therefore obvious that plant efficiency is directly affected by the non-performance of valves, www.valve-world.net

either in terms of output or in terms of reliability and availability.

What can go wrong? Typical results of incorrect sizing, inferior quality and insufficient testing of valves are: • • •

Safety and environmental concerns Longer start up time Loss of process availability and profitability

• • •

Frequent maintenance Occasional plant trips Collateral damage to other expensive plant equipment

So, how can engineering of valves be done correctly, first time, in order to avoid valve leakage and other issues? A long and reliable working effect starts by selecting and sizing the right valve for each specific September 2013

application. Afterwards, the integrity, reliability and safety are only warranted when valves are given the right treatment. And this is exactly where the Ventil Valve Academy comes into play. Given its

the needs of the individual course attendees. The three levels are Users, Maintenance, and Engineering and they are all driven by the attendees’ job role and level of experience. All courses feature instructor-led training sessions, as either general or tailor-made solutions for the requested application. All courses can be provided in the theoretical and practical classrooms in Rijswijk or at the customer’s location. •

The User level focuses on basic, introductory training courses for valve users, traders and maintenance engineers who have limited knowledge of valves and who wish to gain a broader perspective about their use and application. This course is aimed primarily at people new to process

controls, valve trading, valve repairers and supervisory personnel. The Maintenance level covers a multidiscipline training for maintenance / service engineers with a basic knowledge of valve technology. The goal is to learn to recognize and solve problems to restore the performance and integrity of the reconditioned valve in order to enhance process reliability and reduce downtime. The Engineering level features a multidiscipline training intended for supervisory personnel or process engineers seeking advanced training in specific subjects. These courses require a basic knowledge of valve technology or needs to be preceded by a ‘user’ qualification.

Other on-demand and multidiscipline courses are available too, to enhance the relevance and usability of the technical content. These special courses can be put together given the work experiences and needs of course attendees.

The goal of the academy As the valve industry evolves and personnel changes continue apace, knowledge and hands-on experience become crucial. At the end of the Ventil Valve Academy the aim is to provide the highest quality, brand independent information giving plant management assurance that the customer will have the skilled people they need to maximize asset value. And as an add-on to completing a course, attendees have unlimited access to a network of valve experts, ready to answer any practical or theoretical valve questions.

More details independent perspective on all valve brands and the knowledge built up over the past years as an industry expert in testing of valves for malfunction, leakage, etc., the Academy provides industry experts with a learning experience enriched with custom designed in-house and on-site courses (with various education level entries).

Tailor-made courses The Academy offers three different course levels, which will then meet 88
