Six Months Old Communication  Babbles and makes sing-song sounds  Knows familiar faces  Manipulative  Reaches and attempts to hold items  

 Explores by mouthing and banging objects  Opens mouth for spoon  Mobility  Holds head steady when sitting  Needs help sitting 


Pulls up to sitting position if hands are grasped

Twelve Months Old Communication  Babbles, but with inflection, which sounds like talking  Says first word  Responds to another’s distress by showing distress (ex: crying)  Understands simple commands  Manipulative  Drinks from cup with help  Grasps small objects with thumb and forefinger  Puts small blocks in and out of a container  Begins to use objects, like a comb, correctly  Mobility  Sits unsupported  Crawls on hands and knees  Pulls self up to stand  Takes steps while holding on to furniture  Stands alone momentarily  Walks with one hand held  Moves body to music  

Two Years Old Communication  Begins to make believe play  Can /will follow directions  Has vocabulary of several hundred words and 2-3 word sentences  Comforts a distressed friend of parent  Refers to self by name, uses “me” and “mine”  Can points out eyes, ears, or nose  Manipulation  Drinks from a straw  Feeds self with spoon  Builds tower with 3-4 items  Opens cabinets, drawers, boxes  Likes to take things apart  Enjoys looking at the same books over and over  Mobility  Explores environment  Walks upstairs (some help)  

Three Years Old Communication  Focuses – pays attention- about 3 minutes  Likes to be read to and peruse the book alone  Remembers yesterday’s events  Follows one step directions  Asks questions, short ones  Uses 3-5 words sentences  Names some colors, some numbers, counts 23 objects  Knows most common objects and pictures  Knows 1st and last name  Manipulation  Builds towers of 4-5 items  Turns pages individually  Mobility  Alternates feet while walking up steps  

Four Years Old Communication  Follows up to 3 directions given together  Larger/growing vocabulary  Asks direct questions, how and why  Counts up to 5  Sorts by shape and color  Knows basic colors  Knows age and hometown  Uses 5 or more word sentences that even strangers understand  Manipulation  Begins to copy letters, attempts own name  Builds tower of 7-9 items  Completes basic puzzles (4-12 pieces)  Mobility  Alternates feet while walking up/down steps, uses handrail  

Five Years Old Communication  Wants to know definitions of words  Wants to understand cause and effect  Knows more colors  Copies name, identifies letters  Counts up to 10  6 word sentences with: and, but, then used for length  Creates simple games  Manipulation  Uses knife and fork  Prints letters  Copies shapes/patterns  Mobility  Alternates feet while walking up/down steps  Balances on one foot - five seconds  
