SUBARU BOXER Engine The Legacy drives with a unique sense of spirit, so you won’t be surprised by how uniquely it is powered. The horizontally-opposed SUBARU BOXER engine boasts a lower, flatter profile than other engine types. This gives the entire car a lower centre of gravity for balanced handling to match its smooth, torque-rich power.

INCREASED STABILITY Because the engine block has a flatter profile and sits lower in the chassis, the overall vehicle is more stably balanced and resistant to side-to-side motion than other designs.

SMOOTH POWER At any rpm the engine delivers immediate, responsive power that comes on smooth. The pistons lay flat and work against each other to reduce vibrations, making the ride as easy and comfortable as it is exciting.

LONG-LASTING PERFORMANCE The engine’s flat design is inherently rigid and selfbalancing, generating less vibration than “V-type” or “in-line” engines for more durability and more reliable performance.

LINEARTRONIC + ACTIVE TORQUE SPLIT AWD For instant, seamless response to changing conditions, Legacy 2.0i and 2.5i models are available with Lineartronic, a Continuously Variable Transmission that uses a chain instead of a belt—allowing a greater span of overall ratios for improved performance and efficiency as well as a faster response to your throttle input. It’s longitudinally paired with an active torquesplit AWD system that responds to traction conditions, the transmission and driver inputs by continuously controlling the torque distribution front to rear. Paddle shifters also provide a six-step manual mode for quick response on demand.

Legacy 2.5GT models are equipped with a refined E-5AT automatic transmission paired with Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) AWD. VTD instantaneously distributes the engine’s torque to all four wheels whilst focusing on the rear wheels to suit the conditions, for enhanced handling, superior traction and stability. The electronically controlled 5-speed transmission features driver-adaptive shifting, blipping control for quicker, smoother downshifts, and manual-style control via paddle shifters.

For maximum control and sporty satisfaction, a slick-shifting 6-speed manual transmission is standard on Sedan 2.0i models. It’s paired with an AWD system utilising a centre differential with viscous LSD (Limited Slip Differential). If wheel speed differs between the front and rear axles, the system helps distribute power to the wheels with the most traction. The 6-speed offers smoother, more precise shifting, along with the compact size and lightweight that add to Legacy’s sporty feel.

PADDLE SHIFTERS Every Legacy equipped with the innovative Lineartronic or the 5-speed includes a sporty manual mode with paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel.

CRUISE CONTROL Standard electronic cruise control allows the driver to maintain a preset speed on the open road. Elegant metallic-finished controls are located on the steering wheel.

Legacy elevates the inherent advantages of its signature Subaru layout-balance, composure and response–with the Subaru Dynamic Chassis Control Concept (DC 3). The body uses hightensile steel in critical areas to achieve high strength and light weight. A highly rigid Cradle Mount front-end structure delivers an accurate, natural steering feel whilst allowing the engine and suspension to be effectively isolated from the cabin for a smoother, quieter ride. The result is everything that makes driving a pleasure: confidence with comfort, sportiness with safety, and elegance with efficiency – all in perfect balance.

Expertly balancing sporty handling with refinement, Legacy’s double wishbone rear suspension handles rough roads and sharp corners with poise and precision. To maximise stability and provide increased responsiveness, the suspension features pillow ball bushings in the lower control arms. Tyre contact is improved under all conditions whilst keeping unwanted vibration away from the passenger compartment.

Legacy Station Wagon’s retractable cargo cover helps to keep luggage out of view and away from sunlight. With lightweight yet sturdy aluminium construction, the cover is easily removed to make way for larger cargo when the rear seats are folded down.

The stable, responsive handling of its Symmetrical AWD is enhanced by the low centre of gravity of its SUBARU BOXER engine. Its available Vehicle Dynamics Control System, sure-footed suspension, 4-wheel antilock brakes, Traction Control System, and quick steering equip the driver with excellent evasive abilities.

Standard in every Legacy, Vehicle Dynamics Control monitors and analyses if the vehicle is following the driver’s intended course via an array of sensors. If the vehicle approaches the limits of stability, the AWD torque distribution, engine output and brakes at each wheel are adjusted to assist in keeping the vehicle on course.

BRAKING SYSTEM The standard 4-wheel disc brakes feature lightweight aluminium rear calipers and a strong, reassuring brake feel. The Antilock Braking System (ABS) includes Electronic Brake-force Distribution, to reapportion front/rear braking pressure when the vehicle is loaded. Brake assist provides greater force in sudden braking even if the driver doesn’t brake hard enough. And Subaru’s Hill Holder helps prevent rollback when starting off on a 5% or steeper grade, by applying the electronic parking brake and automatically releasing it once you’re underway.

PASSIVE SAFETY, TO BETTER SURVIVE A COLLISION

SEATS, SEATBELTS AND SRS* AIRBAGS

At Subaru, there is never an end to the pursuit of safety. We set high standards, constantly Legacy’s designed with occupant protection as a high priority. Its body structure is intelligently strengthened in critical areas to help minimise the impact energies that reach the cabin. Front SRS* airbags, front and rear-side curtain SRS* airbags, whiplash-reducing front seats, and 3-point seatbelts all around help protect occupants.

Standard on every Legacy are front SRS* airbags, plus front-side, curtain and knee SRS* airbags. Height-adjustable front seatbelts feature pretensioners to hold passengers firmly in place, and load limiters that ease peak forces to the chest. In a rear collision, front seats utilise rigid frames, firm headrests and such details as energy-absorbing mounting of the inner seat springs, all to help reduce the chance of whiplash.

BREAK AWAY ENGINE Every Subaru goes above and beyond common practice when it comes to your safety. In the event of a head-on collision, your Legacy’s SUBARU BOXER engine and gearbox are designed to absorb the impact and break away from the cabin for your protection.

PEDESTRIAN PROTECTION Legacy was designed with the objective of providing a high level of pedestrian protection. Shock-absorbing space between the bonnet and engine helps to reduce pedestrian injury in an accident, as do an energy-absorbing front bumper and a specially designed area around the windshield wipers.

RING-SHAPED REINFORCEMENT FRAMES The Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frames strengthen the passenger cabin from the roof to the doors, pillars and floor. This design helps divert and dissipate impact energy from the occupants in a collision. The front crumple zone is integral to the frame.
