Student Learning Objectives Upon viewing the video and completing the enclosed student activities, students will be able to do the following: • • • • • • • • •

Explain that a season is one of four periods of the year. List the four seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. Understand that in spring the weather warms and the days get longer. Define migration as a process in which some animals seasonally travel to a new place where it is easier for them to survive. Cite an example of an animal that migrates. Explain that hibernation is a sleep-like state some animals go into during winter. Understand that in spring, plants tend to begin growing as the weather warms. List some activities that people do in spring. Generally understand how earth’s revolution around the sun and the tilt of its axis are responsible for the seasons.

Assessment

What Do You Know Now? (p. 10): This preliminary assessment is an assessment tool designed to gain an understanding of students’ preexisting knowledge. It can also be used as a benchmark upon which to assess student progress based on the objectives stated on the previous pages.

What Have You Learned? (p. 11):

This post assessment can be utilized as an assessment tool following student completion of the program and student activities. The results of this assessment can be compared against the results of the preliminary assessment to assess student progress.

Video Review (p. 12): The Video Review can be used as an assessment tool or as a student activity. There are two sections. The first part contains questions displayed during the program. The second part consists of a five-question video quiz to be answered at the end of the video.

Introducing the Program Before showing the video to students you may want to introduce some unfamiliar vocabulary words. Begin by asking them what time of year it is right now. They should say it is spring, summer, fall, or winter. Write these terms on the board. Then write the term “season” on the board. Explain that there are four seasons. Tell students that the video they are going to view is about the spring season. Ask students to describe the weather in spring. Ask them what kinds of things happen with plants and animals in spring. And, ask them what things they like to do in spring. Tell students to pay close attention to the video to learn more about spring.

Program Viewing Suggestions The student master “Video Review” is provided (p. 12) for distribution to students. You may choose to have your students complete this Master while viewing the program or do so upon its conclusion. The program is approximately 10 to 12 minutes in length and includes a five-question video quiz. Answers are not provided to the Video Quiz in the video, but are included in this guide on page 9. You may choose to grade student quizzes as an assessment tool or to review the answers in class. The video is content-rich with numerous vocabulary words. For this reason you may want to periodically stop the video to review and discuss new terminology and concepts.

Video Script 1. The weather on this winter day is cold and snowy. 2. But just a few months later, the snow has melted and the weather is warmer. 3. This time of year is called spring. It is the spring season. A season is one of four periods of the year. 4. The spring season follows the winter season. 5. What is the general weather like in spring? 6. What are some of the things plants and animals do at this time of year? 7. What do people do in spring? 8. And, what causes spring? 9. During the next few minutes we are going to answer these questions as we learn about the exciting season of spring. 10. Graphic Transition – What Happens in Spring? 11. If you live in a place that has cold winters, you know that eventually spring brings warmer weather. 12. In spring the days get warmer causing the snow to melt. 13. The days also get longer and the nights get shorter. 14. In some places it rains a lot in spring. 15. Because the overall weather gets warmer and the days get longer during spring, many exciting things happen with plants and animals. Let’s take a look at some of the things plants and animals do in spring. 16. Graphic Transition – Plants and Animals in Spring 17. This flock of geese is returning to their spring and summer home. The seasonal movement of animals to a different place is called migration. 18. You Decide! Why do animals migrate? 19. Animals migrate to places where it is easier for them to survive. 20. Monarch butterflies, birds, and even elk are animals that migrate in the spring. 21. Many animals also have their babies in the spring. 22. This bird is building a nest in which to lay eggs… 23. …that will eventually hatch into chicks. 24. Many farm animals such as sheep and chickens also have their babies in the spring. 25. Video Script 28. As the weather warms, and the sun’s light becomes more intense the grass begins to become green and it grows taller. 29. Also, beautiful spring flowers grow and blossom. 30. These are just a few of the many exciting things that happen with animals and plants in spring. 31. Graphic Transition – People in Spring 32. Many children and adults start to play sports outside, take walks, and ride bikes. 34. You Decide! What happens to the soil as the days get warmer? 35. As the days get warmer, the soil also gets warmer. 36. This enables farmers to begin to plow the earth and plant seeds. 37. People that have vegetable gardens also prepare the soil for planting. 38. When the soil is warm enough, and the danger of frost has passed, that is when they’ll plant. 39. The seeds germinate and sprout into small plants that grow throughout the spring season. 40. Graphic Transition – What Causes Spring? 41. If you live in a northern place the changes in the seasons are very noticeable. 42. Even if you live in a place closer to the equator such as Florida there are noticeable changes in the seasons, but they are somewhat less dramatic. 43. What exactly is responsible for the change in seasons? 44. As you may know, our planet Earth, has a spherical shape,… 45. … kind of like this ball. 46. In space, Earth is not positioned straight up and down, but is tilted on an imaginary line called an axis that runs from the north pole to the south pole 47. You also may know that Earth moves around the sun. In space, earth revolves around the sun, while the sun stays in one place. The amount of time that it takes Earth to revolve completely around the sun is one year, or 365 days. 48. When Earth revolves around the sun, its axis is always tilted in the same direction. 49. During the part of the year seen here, the northern hemisphere is tilted away from the sun and receives less sunlight. 50. You Decide! What season is this? 51. It is the winter season in the northern hemisphere. 52. But, as Earth continues to revolve around the sun, the northern hemisphere becomes tilted toward it, and receives more sunlight.

7

On the equinox it is dark for 12 hours and light for 12 hours everywhere on Earth. 54. The spring equinox signifies the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere. 55. As Earth continues to revolve around the sun during the spring it receives more sunlight and the days get longer and warmer. 56. The last day of spring occurs on June 20 or 21. 57. Summer is the next season that follows spring. 58. Graphic Transition – Video Review 59. During the past few minutes we have explored some of the exciting features of spring. 60. We took a look at how the weather warms in spring, and the days get longer. 61. Some of the interesting things that plants and animals do in spring were discussed. 62. We also investigated some of the things people do in this season. 63. Last, we explored how the position of Earth relative to the sun causes the different seasons. 64.
