STIM method The word STIM comes from stimulation. This method resembles the countdown of the NASA, in stead of counting from ten to zero the counting goes from 1 to the number has chosen. One is ordered to tell the chosen number in advance and is ordered to lie at the moment that the chosen number is presented. The body reaction is the normal Orientation Reflex or Preparation. It is not the detection of a lie. The person that is assesed sometimes thinks that the polygraph can do miracles. This method is not Lie detection. CQT Control Question Technique. The person is given different types of questions: normal or nonsense questions, questions that are nasty for everybody, and questions that should only be nasty for lying guilty people. These questions are called Probe questions. The assumption is that the lying person will show extra physiological activity when a Probe question is given because of specific fear for Probe questions. Biggest problem for this method is that for every person a new set of questions has to be made, it is not a standardised set of questions and therefore also not a standardised test. Second biggest problem is that physiological reactions can be started voluntary. The reactions should indicate Fear, but can be the result of all kinds of other factors. This method for Lie detection is not a succesfull method. GKT Guilty Knowledge Technique. This is the only technique that can detect guilty persons. Only a guilty person knows how the crime scene was, which words the victim said, which clothes the victim had, how the actual hammer or knife used looked like. This methid is Recognition and not Lie Detection.

CONCLUSION 1 When the polygraph does give almost perfect information on Lies (which is not the case, but imagine that it can) it results in information that the forensic patient is lying about his intentions for behavior in the future 2 The amount of risk for a new crime – recidivism – can only be estimated based on a large number of causal factors. Lying is just one factor in a large number of risk factors and protective factors. 3 Working with a polygraph in forensic psychiatric settings can only add a small amount of information in the proces of risk assessment. (a large amount of work and problems for a small gain)
