Electromagnetic Engineering
Master thesis project:
Lightning Shielding for EHV and UHV DC and AC Overhead Transmission Lines EHV (Extra High Voltage) and UHV (Ultra High Voltage) DC and AC lines are currently used to transmit large amounts of power to remote locations from the load centers. 1000 kV AC UHV transmission lines have been built in some countries Russia, Japan, Italy and China. These lines are significantly larger than conventional lines and have experienced larger shielding lightning failure rates which cannot be explained by the existing methods. The task: The purpose of this thesis is to study the attachment of lightning flashes to EHV and UHV transmission lines using a state-of-the-art model (running in COMSOL Multiphysics Livelink to Matlab) in order to critically assess the validity of the existing methods and to propose new approaches to perform their shielding design.
