Cast on 97 (105: 115: 121) sts using a 5mm circular needle. Place a stitch marker at the beg of the first round, to denote beg and end of round. Round 1 (K1, P1) to last st, K1. Round 2 (P1, K1) to last st, P1. These two rounds form moss stitch, rep these 2 rounds until the knitting measures 2in (5cm). Next round Knit 13 sts, moss st 23 (27:31: 35) sts (keep with the moss stitch pattern from the hem), turn and work in rows. Next row Moss st 23 (27:31: 35) sts. Rep the moss st pattern on these sts for 10 (11: 12: 13) more rows. Cast off 2 sts at the beg of the next 2 rows. [19 (23: 27:31) sts] Moss st 2 rows. Next row K2tog at the beg and end of row. [17 (21: 25: 29) sts] Moss st 2 rows. Next row K2tog at the beg and end of row. [15 (19: 23: 27) sts] Next row K2tog at the beg and end of row. [13 (17: 21: 25) sts] Continue on these stitches for 5 (6: 7: 8) rows then put them on a stitch holder. Rejoin the yarn to the sts on the right side of the pocket and cast on 23 (27:31: 35) sts. Knit 26 (28: 30: 32) rounds still using the original position of the stitch marker to denote start and end of rounds.

Shape armholes

Next round K18, attach the top of the pocket by

knitting the next st and the first st from the stitch holder together, rep this method along the stitch holder, continue with the round. Continue knitting until the knitting meas 9 (9V: 10: 10V)in, 23(24: 25.5: 26.5)cm. Next round Continue to knit until 3 (4: 4: 5) sts from stitch marker. Cast off 6 (8: 8: 10) sts. K43 (45: 49: 51), cast off 6 (8: 8: 10), K42 (44: 48: 50).

Turn, working on these 42 (44: 48: 50) sts only, st st for 5V (6: 6V: 7)in, 14 (15: 16.5: 18)cm Next row (WS) Cast off 4 (4: 5: 6) sts, K to end. Next row Cast off 4 (4: 5: 6) sts, P to end. Next row Cast off 9 sts, K16 (18: 20: 20), cast off 9 sts. Put the remaining 16 (18: 20: 20) sts onto a stitch holder.

Front

Next row (RS) Rejoin the yarn and knit to the end of the row. St st 3 more rows. Next row Knit 16 (17: 19: 20), moss st 11 sts starting with a P st, K16 (17: 19: 20). Next row P16 (17: 19: 20), moss st 11 sts, P16 (17: 19: 20). Rep these last 2 rows once more.

Next row Moss st 5, P16 (17: 19: 20) sts. Rep these last 2 rows until knitting measures 14V (15V: 16V: 18)in, 37 (39: 42: 45.5)cm. Next row (WS) Cast off 4 (4: 6: 6) sts, K12 (13: 13: 14), moss st 5. Next row Moss st 5, P3 (4: 4: 5), cast off 9 sts. Slip these 8 (9: 9: 10) sts onto a stitch holder. Rejoin yarn Next row Moss st 5, K16 (17: 19: 20). Next row P16 (17: 19: 20), moss st 5. After making the pocket, ensure that it is sitting to the right side of your work. (Note: there is no pocket shown in these pictures to make it easier to show you the method). Now rejoin the yarn and cast on the number of stitches as stated using the cable method. Now knit back across the sts you have cast on continuing in the round. When you reach the break in stitches, continue to knit in the round.

Cast on 33 (37: 41: 45) sts using a 5mm circular needle. Row 1 K1, *P1, K1, rep from * to end of row. Rep this row for 2in (5cm). Next row (RS) Inc 1 st at the beg and end of row. [35 (39: 43: 47) sts] Inc 1 st at beg and end of every 4th row until there are 51 (57: 61: 67) sts and the knitting measures 9 (10: 11: 12)in, 22.5 (25.5: 28: 30.5)cm. Cast off.

Making up

Using matching thread backstitch the arm seams. Pin the sleeves into armhole and stitch in place.

When you’ve finished there will be a gap between the base of the pocket and the new sts that you cast on. Now stitch the base of the pocket to the top of the moss stitch hem to close the gap.

Cast on 7 sts using a 5mm circular needle. Row 1 K1, *P1, K1, rep from * to end of row Rep this row until they measure 11 (12: 13: 14)in, 28 (30.5: 33: 35.5)cm Pin sleeves to the front part of the armholes up over the shoulder and down the back stopping at the base of the hole. Sew in place. You could leave the sleeves like this or as we did fold them in half and stitch in place to form tubes.
