A warm welcome back to LCM Live 2017/18. We have yet another exciting year planned for students, staff and, most importantly, our wonderful audience members to enjoy. We’ll be continuing with our ever-popular lunchtime concerts, Composers’ Workshops, master classes, LCM Sessions and a host of other events and concerts. In November, we look forward to our “World War 1 Centenary” commemoration showcasing LCM students in two original pieces. “Women at War” embodies the affect of war on women through dance and movement. This will be accompanied by music from LCM alum Patricia Evans. We are delighted to welcome writer and director, Judith Paris, as she guides our actors through her new play, “A World at War”. I’m happy to remind you that LCM is celebrating 130 years, and over the next year we will be

London College of Music – 130 years of fostering talent London College of Music was founded by G Augustus Holmes in 1887 at 54 Great Marlborough Street, with a mission to improve musical standards across the UK and to offer a range of qualifications to all ages, sexes and backgrounds. Its emphasis on accessibility was pioneering and unique in comparison with the other music colleges of the time.
16
The College began as an examining body, but a teaching element was created quite early in its history which provided facilities for part-time education. Many popular classes were established including Orchestra, Operatic Classes and Ladies’ Choir. Its
courses grew so much in popularity that within 7 years of its founding, the College had moved twice in search of more space, finally settling at 47 Great Marlborough Street where it remained until 1991. By 1891 the College had 4,000 exam candidates. By 1894 it had 340 centres in America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Brasil, Chile and West Indies.

LONDON COLLEGE OF MUSIC
years 1887-2017
“....they (LCM) had popularised music in many places which otherwise it would never have reached. They had not only helped those who sought to enter the profession, but had raised the standard amongst those who did not seek the profession, but wished to study music for its own sake. They all knew the immense refining power of music, and the London College of Music was doing a great and good work in spreading a love of it, thus bringing ‘the greatest happiness to the greatest number.’”
With the advent of Dr William Lloyd Webber, LCM began to enjoy a ’Golden Age’, during which time it became widely recognised in the music world as one of ‘the five’ London Music Colleges. The examinations department was re-organised and Dr Lloyd Webber pioneered the introduction of exams for electronic organ. Improvements were made to the building and a new organ was installed thanks to the generosity of the Rank Trust.
Sir Vincent Kennett-Barrington, Patron 1894 The College continued to prosper with the support of notable examiners such as Dr W J Westbrook in the late Victorian period, also of Dr W H Longhurst, an organist of Canterbury Cathedral and H WhartonWells in the 1930s and 1940s. Philip Dore, an organist renowned particularly for his performance of the music of J S Bach, was also an examiner and in the 1950s gave a series of lectures and recitals at the College.
William Lloyd Webber
17
On Dr Lloyd Webber’s untimely death in 1982, John McCabe became Director and further improved the status of LCM. His tenure saw the centenary of LCM and a concert at the Barbican with the distinguished pianist John Lill and cellist Julian Lloyd Webber as soloists. Some major building works to enlarge the space took place, as well as the establishment of Music Technology and Film Music courses. Owing to lack of investment, the merger with the Polytechnic of West London in 1991 was inevitable, but at the same time it ensured that LCM was able to prosper and acquire what it lacked at Great Marlborough Street – increased space and facilities.
130 years on, LCM is the largest specialist music and performing arts institution in the UK. It offers an impressive range of innovative courses, respected worldwide and delivered with creativity and passion in state-of-theart facilities. Its teaching staff still work as successful and prominent performers, creators and composers within the wider music industry, bringing career-relevant and cuttingedge experience to their courses. Through London College of Music Examinations, LCM offers graded and diploma qualifications in music, drama and communication in 51 countries and 898 exam centres across the globe. LCM boasts a thriving Junior College, a performing arts school for children and young people at all stages of musical learning.

“We have a great challenge before us. We have a new future to build. Its direction may not be clear in all particulars, but the LCM is still alive and in its new setting has perhaps a greater, if different, potential than ever before.” So said John Chapman, a former Warden of LCM, on the move to Ealing in 1991. And so the LCM has successfully reached its 130th birthday in a robust state, with much to be proud of in its history and ready to meet new challenges.

While the world changes around him, Tevye tries to hold tight to his Jewish faith and culture in the face of modernity and anti-Semitism. This Musical Theatre classic ran for over 3000 performances when it debuted in 1964 and went on to win nine Tony awards

Fiddler On The Roof for music writers Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, book writer Joseph Stein, Producer Harold Prince and Director/Choreographer Jerome Robbins. Rags shares many themes with Fiddler on the Roof, which is not surprising since they both come from the pen of the same book writer, Joseph Stein; even though they were written 20 years apart. With lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Wicked) and music by Charles Strouse (Bye Bye Birdie and Annie), Rags has a score packed with fantastic melodies and a book which pulls no punches and was nominated for five Tony
awards in 1987. It tells the story of Rebecca Hershkowitz, who has fled Russia with her young son, and arrives in New York City to look for her husband Nathan and build a new life in America. The examination of the role of the immigrant and the contrast between old world and new world are themes that resonate with audiences today.

An Insight Into Musical Theatre Programming
42
This year marks the 130th Anniversary of the London College of Music. In order to celebrate this landmark, I went looking for musical theatre pieces that would address this period of history. While not set in 1887, both Fiddler on the Roof (set 1905) and Rags (set 1910) explore the great diaspora of Jewish people as a result of the pogroms of Russia (1881-84 and 1903-1906) which were a major global phenomenon during the early years of the London College of Music. In many ways, the migration of people (whether by choice or necessity) is still a global phenomenon today, as is the tension between old world and new world which seems a relevant topic as Britain navigates a new pathway away from Europe.
and so it seemed appropriate to celebrate women and women’s point of view in musical theatre. In their own way, each of these pieces are about women navigating their way in worlds that are dominated by men. The struggle of daughters against fathers (Fiddler) and wives against husbands (Rags) is a painful one still being fought today by too many women. While these two musicals have many resonances for a modern audience, they are also fantastic pieces of sung theatre with exciting tuneful scores and stories that will capture your imagination. I hope you enjoy our Autumn productions and they inspire you to both tap your toe and ponder how the struggles of 130 years ago are still being fought today.
In addition, this year’s graduating Musical Theatre class is made up of 70% women
