Welcome to the final London College of Music Live programme for 2018. This is an exciting year for LCM as we continue to celebrate our 130 year anniversary. In this programme we focus on the work of our soon to be graduating students as part of the UWL Graduate Summer Showcase. There is a wealth of opportunity to see our students performing including two musical theatre productions, 9 to 5 and Urinetown, and over 40 Performance Projects in venues all over London.

London College of Music – 130 years of fostering talent London College of Music was founded by G Augustus Holmes in 1887 at 54 Great Marlborough Street, with a mission to improve musical standards across the UK and to offer a range of qualifications to all ages, sexes and backgrounds. Its emphasis on accessibility was pioneering and unique in comparison with the other music colleges of the time.

The College began as an examining body, but a teaching element was created quite early in its history which provided facilities for part-time education. Many popular classes were established including Orchestra, Operatic Classes and Ladies’ Choir. Its

courses grew so much in popularity that within 7 years of its founding, the College had moved twice in search of more space, finally settling at 47 Great Marlborough Street where it remained until 1991. By 1891 the College had 4,000 exam candidates. By 1894 it had 340 centres in America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Brasil, Chile and West Indies.

“....they (LCM) had popularised music in many places which otherwise it would never have reached. They had not only helped those who sought to enter the profession, but had raised the standard amongst those who did not seek the profession, but wished to study music for its own sake. They all knew the immense refining power of music, and the London College of Music was doing a great and good work in spreading a love of it, thus bringing ‘the greatest happiness to the greatest number.’”

With the advent of Dr William Lloyd Webber, LCM began to enjoy a ’Golden Age’, during which time it became widely recognised in the music world as one of ‘the five’ London Music Colleges. The examinations department was re-organised and Dr Lloyd Webber pioneered the introduction of exams for electronic organ. Improvements were made to the building and a new organ was installed thanks to the generosity of the Rank Trust.

Sir Vincent Kennett-Barrington, Patron 1894 The College continued to prosper with the support of notable examiners such as Dr W J Westbrook in the late Victorian period, also of Dr W H Longhurst, an organist of Canterbury Cathedral and H WhartonWells in the 1930s and 1940s. Philip Dore, an organist renowned particularly for his performance of the music of J S Bach, was also an examiner and in the 1950s gave a series of lectures and recitals at the College.

On Dr Lloyd Webber’s untimely death in 1982, John McCabe became Director and further improved the status of LCM. His tenure saw the centenary of LCM and a concert at the Barbican with the distinguished pianist John Lill and cellist Julian Lloyd Webber as soloists. Some major building works to enlarge the space took place, as well as the establishment of Music Technology and Film Music courses. Owing to lack of investment, the merger with the Polytechnic of West London in 1991 was inevitable, but at the same time it ensured that LCM was able to prosper and acquire what it lacked at Great Marlborough Street – increased space and facilities.

130 years on, LCM is the largest specialist music and performing arts institution in the UK. It offers an impressive range of innovative courses, respected worldwide and delivered with creativity and passion in state-of-theart facilities. Its teaching staff still work as successful and prominent performers, creators and composers within the wider music industry, bringing career-relevant and cuttingedge experience to their courses. Through London College of Music Examinations, LCM offers graded and diploma qualifications in music, drama and communication in 51 countries and 898 exam centres across the globe. LCM boasts a thriving Junior College, a performing arts school for children and young people at all stages of musical learning.

Its direction may not be clear in all particulars, but the LCM is still alive and in its new setting has perhaps a greater, if different, potential than ever before.” So said John Chapman, a former Warden of LCM, on the move to Ealing in 1991. And so the LCM has successfully reached its 130th birthday in a robust state, with much to be proud of in its history and ready to meet new challenges.

Advanced Performance Projects

Performance Projects Final year BMus students present a wide range of self-managed projects as part of their performance-based modules. These performances are the pinnacle point of the students’ time with us at LCM, and a lot of time and consideration is invested into them. For our pop performance students, students evaluate their musical direction skills, focusing on the areas of leadership, interaction and expressivity, and form a thorough understanding of the technical and communicative skills required in the area of live, popular music performance. We also demonstrate the diversity of our students with rich, diverse and creative performances showcasing our classical and jazz students. These performances take place at a variety of venues including our own fabulous Lawrence and Vestry Hall along with a number of popular venues across London. The shows are open to the public, and are often used to showcase artists to record company A+R departments and live music promoters. Junior Chefs Academy The Junior Chefs Academy is sponsored by Harrison Catering, and is supported by the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts and the Craft Guild of Chefs. The courses are aimed at Year 10 and 11 students, and provide a great start for those interested in a career in food and culinary arts. The courses last for 10 weeks, and are delivered on Saturday mornings from 9.30am to 12.30pm (Cake and Bake – Thursdays 5 – 8pm). All classes cost £10 per session. 9 to 5 The Musical, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick, is based on the seminal 1980 hit movie. Set in the late 1970s. this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic. Pushed to the boiling point, three female coworkers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee live out their wildest fantasy – giving their boss the boot! While Hart remains “otherwise engaged,” the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down. Hey, a girl can scheme, can’t she? This high-energy show is ideal for a large, mostly female cast, but also has opportunities for talented male dancers. With its jubilant score and easily relatable characters, 9 to 5 is the perfect show for community theatres.

LCM Junior College

LCM Junior College Performance is at the heart of the London College of Music community and particularly so for Junior College students, who perform in a number of concerts throughout the year. These performances provide our students with the opportunity to build their confidence and showcase their talents. Students at LCM Junior College are encouraged to take graded examinations with our graded examination board – LCM Examinations, which delivers over 60,000 exams per year worldwide. LCM graded examinations are part of the National Qualification Network, which means that students gain valuable UCAS points along their musical pathway. Those who achieve an LCM grade 8 in their chosen instrument, will receive an automatic practical offer when applying for BMus (Hons) Performance or BMus (Hons) Performance and Recording at undergraduate level.

Facilities London College of Music has an impressive number of individual studios in which students may practise. There is also a wide range of teaching rooms and lecture theatres, as well as performance spaces including a dance studio. Lawrence Hall and Vestry Hall house the music technology facilities including our state-of-theart digital recording studios. Bursaries available • E aling Music and Film Festival have very kindly supported Junior College with funding for places in our samba group. There are some places still available. • B ursaries are available for instruments, fees and sheet music purchases through the Grocers’ Access Fund for those wishing to pursue lessons at Junior College. The award will be made on the basis of academic merit, potential to achieve and financial need.

London College of Music Examinations London College of Music Examinations offers qualifications in music, drama and communication, through a worldwide network of exam centres. Exams cover a wide range of classical, jazz, pop/rock and traditional music subjects. They are available for candidates of all levels: from beginner Steps through 8 grades to professional diplomas in performance and teaching.
