M.A AND M.COM. Eligibility for Admission Admission to M.A/ M.Com. Degree Programmes is made under two Regulations: Regulation I & Regulation II Regulation- I Those who have obtained Bachelor’s Degree of three years duration without studying Cognate subjects Those who have passed in the three year degree programme without studying the Cognate subjects are eligible for admission to any Post Graduate Programme under Regulation-I. Such admitted candidates have to pass the Master’s Preparatory Programme (MPP) examination conducted by the Karnataka State Open University. Regulation- II Those candidates who have obtained their Graduate degree of three years duration in the Cognate subjects are eligible for admission under Regulation-II. Those who have done their Graduation with Cognate subjects can seek admission to Post Graduate subjects in the same Cognate subjects. Those who seek admission for M.Com Programme should have passed B.Com/B.B.M/B.B.A degree examination of three years duration. Candidates admitted under Regulation-II are exempted from the Master’s Preparatory Programme (MPP) examination. Details of Cognate subjects are given below: M.A English Admission is open to: (a) Candidates who have passed three Year B.A/B.Sc/B.A (Performing Arts) Degree Examination of any recognized University offering English as a Major/Optional subject at the Degree level OR an examination of any University considered equivalent thereto. (b) Candidates who have passed the Three Years B.A/B.Sc/B.Music Degree Examination offering English as Second Language or as a Minor subject at the Degree level are also eligible, provided they have obtained not less than 50 percent of the maximum marks in the above language/subject. (c) Candidates who have passed the Four Year B.A.Ed Degree Examination of the University of Mysore (Regional College Scheme) with English as Major/Optional. (d) Candidates who have passed Four Year B.A.Ed or B.Sc.Ed of University of Mysore (Regional College scheme), provided they have obtained not less than 50 percent of marks in Language English. (e) Graduates of any University who have passed Post-Graduate Diploma in English. M.A Hindi Admission is open to: (a) Candidates who have passed Three Year B.A/B.Sc/B.A (Performing Arts) Degree Examination of any MASTER IN COMPUTER APPLICATION recognized University offering Hindi as a Language Under Group-I or Group-II. Provided they have obtained not less than 50% of marks. Or (b) Candidates who have passed a degree of any University recognized as equivalent thereto with Hindi as Optional or as Major subject. or (c) Graduates of any recognized University and if the candidate is not studied either Hindi as Language or as Optional then the following examinations will be treated as equivalent to Language and Optional Hindi (But the Candidate must be a Graduate of a recognized University) one of the following Hindi Examinations:i. Rashtrabhasha Praveen or Rashtrabhasha Vishard Examination of the Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachara Sabha, Chennai.

Rashtrabhasha Vidwan or Rajabhasha Prakash Examination of Karnataka Hindi Prachara Samithi, Bangalore. iii. Hindi Ratna Examination of the Mysore Hindi Prachara Parishat, Bangalore. iv. Bhasha Praveen Examination of the Karnataka Mahila Hindi seva samithi, Bangalore. v. Sahitya Vishard i.e., Sahitya Madhyama or Uttama i.e., Sahitya Ratna (with Hindi Sahitya) of the Hindi Sahitya Sammelan, Prayag. M.A. HISTORY Admission is open to candidates who have passed Three Years B.A/B.A (Performing Arts) Degree Examination of any recognized University offering History as one of the Major/Optional subjects at the Degree level or an examination of any university considered equivalent thereto. M.A. ECONOMICS Admission is open to candidates who have passed Three Year B.A. /B.Sc. /B.A(Performing Arts) Degree Examination of any recognized University offering Economics as one of the Major/Optional subjects at the Degree level or an examination of any university considered equivalent thereto. M.A. POLITICAL SCIENCE Admission is open to candidates who have passed Three Year B.A/B.Sc /B.A (Performing Arts) Degree Examination of any recognized University offering Political Science and Public Administration as one of the Major/Optional subjects at the Degree level or an examination of any university considered equivalent thereto. M.A. SOCIOLOGY Admission is open to candidates who have passed Three Years B..A /B..A (Performing Arts) Degree Examination of any recognized University offering Sociology as one of the Major/Optional subjects at the Degree level or an examination of any university considered equivalent thereto. M.COM Admission is open to candidates who have passed Three Years B.Com /B.B.M Degree Examination of any recognized University or an examination of any University considered equivalent thereto. NOTE : Candidates seeking admissions to Final Year M.A./M.Com. Directly by transfer from any other University will have to buy the prospectus and submit fresh application and the admission is subject to approval by the Equivalence Committee of KSOU. Duration of the Programme The minimum duration of the M.A/M.Com.programme is ‘Two’ years and the maximum duration is ‘Four ‘years from the year of Admission to the Programme. The candidates who do not complete the Programme within four years will have to seek fresh admission.

Admission to Final Year M.A/M.Com Those students who have completed Previous MA/M.Com Programmes in KSOU need not apply afresh for Final Year M.A/M.Com Programme. They shall pay the prescribed Programme / tuition fee after receiving circular/instructions from the University/Regional centres. They may continue their studies in the Final Year (i) irrespective of their result of the M.A/M.Com (Previous) Examination or (ii) even if they have not appeared for the Previous Examination. Medium of Instruction The medium of instruction in Master Degree Programmes is generally in English except for Language subjects. However, for M.A. Sanskrit Programme the candidates are permitted to write the term-end examination in Sanskrit, Kannada or in English. For M.Com Programme the medium of instruction is English. Study materials for this programme is provided only in English. However the candidates of M.Com programme are permitted to write examination either in Kannada or in English. Credit System The University follows the 'Credit System' for its Postgraduate programmes. Each credit is of 30 hours of study comprising of all learning activities. Thus, a seven credit course involves 210 study hours. This helps the students to understand the academic efforts she/he has to put in order to successfully complete the course. Completion of Postgraduate programme requires successfully clearing 70 credits. Under open distance system, a paper is called "Course" and a course as "Programme". Master’s Preparatory Programme (MPP) Master’s Preparatory Programme (MPP) is compulsory for students admitted under Regulation-I. The students will be supplied with master lessons in 10 blocks giving a bird’s eye view of the cognate subject in which they are admitted to Master’s Degree Programme. Further details are as follows. a. The Candidates will be supplied 10 Blocks of lessons at the time of admission. These lessons contain information about the cognate subject which they have chosen for M.A/M.Com Degree. b. MPP Study enhances the Knowledge of the students besides increasing job opportunities. This Course is introduced to bring in All India Standard for M.A/M.Com degree offered under Open University Scheme. c. Graduates who have not studied cognate subject and taken admission for M.A / M.Com Programmes are required to undergo MPP Examination. d. MPP Examination will be objective type (multiple choice questions). The Exam will be held at the end of the M.A./M.Com. examinations, 2013. Total marks will be 100 for the subjects of M.A. / M.Com. degree programme. Scheme of Examination 1. There will be an Annual Examination at the end of each Academic year during May/June separately for Previous and Final Year. Students can write Examination either in English or Kannada Medium as chosen by them. 2. Students are allowed to take admission to Final year of M.A/M.Com with or without appearing for the previous year examination.
