Sessions

Sessions

Speakers

Tom Walton Have you got rhythm? (3 to 8-year-olds)

In this session we’ll be looking at songs, chants and phonics from coursebooks, adding actions and other special touches that will help them work in the classroom. Be prepared to sing along, and join in!

Will Varney

The three Cs: Content, culture and language competence (6 to 7-year-olds)

Preparing children for the big, wide world is an implicit part of our role as educators. In this session we will explore ways to achieve this by using content from other curriculum areas, along with aspects of children’s culture from English speaking countries, thereby raising intercultural awareness and developing language skills side-by-side.

Room 2 Alistair Jones

Grammar games for children (8 to 12-year-olds)

Children often find it difficult to acquire and use key grammar patterns and high-frequency chunks of language. The objective of this session is to present a selection of grammar games that get children learning at chunk, sentence and text level, beyond the individual word.

What’s the recipe for using technology successfully? (8 to 12-year-olds)

Using technology is a bit like making a large cake: you need the ingredients, some preparation, some good tools (things like GoAnimate, Blogger and Edmodo...), some practice, a tablespoonful of confidence and 25 people to help you eat it. In this session we’re going to look at some simple recipes for successful use of technology with young language learners: successful because they like it, because they learn some English while using it and because they’ll say to you “Can we have another piece?”

Room 3 Mª Jesús Páramo

The secret’s in the mix (ESO & Bachillerato)

In this session, we look at how to identify mixed ability in the Secondary classroom and provide strategies for dealing with it efficiently and effectively. We will take into consideration the setting of rules; the organising of groupwork and cooperative learning and working with different materials. We will also consider aspects of evaluation and self-evaluation with mixed-ability groups. Some of this session will be illustrated with video footage of students from 4º ESO. Jane Kirsch

Pronunciation teaching ideas (ESO & Bachillerato)

Pronunciation is one of the most problematic aspects of English for Spanish speakers but, despite its importance for communication, is often neglected in the classroom. This interactive workshop will identify some key areas for teachers to focus on and offer practical tips and activities to help students speak more clearly.
