AND MONEY (directed by Jan Mikulášek); DIVADLO V DLOUHÉ, PRAHA ...
MAIN PROGRAM 12. září / 12h September 16:00 Komorní divadlo / Chamber Theatre Karel Václav Rais: KALIBA’S CRIME (directed by J. A. Pitínský); SLOVÁCKÉ DIVADLO / SLOVÁCKO THEATRE, UHERSKÉ HRADIŠTĚ Leading Czech director J. A Pitínský once again stages a Czech classic. The hard-hitng story of a man whose marriage to a much younger, calculatng wife and the subsequent intrigues of his mother-in-law result in tragedy. In Pitnský’s hands this excitng story of family relatonships becomes a dynamic drama with elements of folklore and, remarkably, references to the approaches of traditonal Asian theatre. The actors of the Slovácko Theatre deal remarkably with this difficult challenge. Performance length: 160 min. 19:30 Velké divadlo / Grand Theatre A. P. Čechov: IVANOV (directed by Tamás Ascher); JÓZSEF KATONA THEATRE (HU)
O p e n i n g c e r e m o ny
The József Katona Theatre’s most famous producton of the last decade, and one which has played at many top festvals over several contnents. Tamás Ascher, a director recognised on a European scale, above all for his interpretatons of Chekhov’s plays, makes use of the company’s masterful actng, sensibility and energy, and presents Ivanov as a precise choreography of strong feelings and passions. Performance length: 180 min. 13. září / 13th September 11:00 Divadlo Alfa / Alfa Theatre Shakespeare, Tomáš Jarkovský, Jakub Vašíček: HAMLETEEN (directed by Jakub Vašíček); DIVADLO ALFA / ALFA THEATRE, PILSEN (Host theatre production) Hamlet, rewriten for teenagers. Hamlet’s father used to be fonder of scoutng than his wife Gertrude. Hamlet, as a teenager, oscillates between the worlds of scoutng, punk and emo. Claudius is good-humoured and rotund, Gertrude a jaded sceptc, Laertes is gay and Ophelia forthright… The producton makes use of excerpts from Shakespeare’s tragedy. Performance length: 95 min. 15:00 and 19:00 Komorní divadlo – klub / Chamber Theatre – club Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt: ENIGMATIC VARIATIONS (directed by Jan Burian) DIVADLO J. K. TYLA, PLZEŇ / J. K. The “wooden” people and animals are depicted with artstc elegance, while the grandparents’ puppeteers (Michaela and Filip Homola) show mastery of both their puppets and the music. Performance length: 45 min.

Performance length: 95 min. 16:30 Komorní divadlo / Chamber Theatre Irvine Welsh: A BLOCKAGE IN THE SYSTEM (directed by Michal Vajdička); DEJVICKÉ DIVADLO, PRAHA / DEJVICE THEATRE, PRAGUE A pub story full of vulgarisms, slang, swagger and garblings, which explain, among other things, why God sits on the bench. It features excellent team playing by the Dejvice Theatre, superb directon by talented Slovak director Vajdička and irrepressible humour – black, cynical and brutal, maybe, but how else do you describe, in truthful terms, real life which takes no prisoners? Performance length: 150 min. 20:00 Velké divadlo / Grand Theatre Jeroen Brouwers: SUNKEN RED (directed by Guy Cassiers), with Dirk Roofthooft; Produced by TONEELHUIS (BE) & RO THEATER (NL) Guy Cassiers discovers new theatrical paths in a combinaton of several types of special project, which in the monodrama Sunken Red form the background to Dirk Roofthooft’s superb performance. TYLA, PLZEŇ / J. K. TYL THEATRE, PILSEN (Host theatre production) Philip Glass's chamber opera explores the circumstances of a condemned man awaitng executon. The Officer believes in upholding the old methods of torture and killing; the Visitor is appalled by what he sees but unable to intervene as the inevitable occurs. In doing so he leaves intact the subtlety and dramatc force of the story of four women – the dying Agnes, her sisters Karin and Marie and the maid Anna. Performance length: 120 min. Audience members must be aged 18 and over. 17:00 Světovar / Světovar Brewery Simona Petrů, Petr Jan Kryštof: QUIET TARZAN (directed by Anna Petrželková); DIVADLO HUSA NA PROVÁZKU, BRNO / GOOSE ON A STRING THEATRE, BRNO This producton, by a representatve of the youngest generaton of Czech directors, is inspired by the story of photographer Miroslav Tichý. Tichý, whose surname means “quiet” in Czech, was often seen by the world around him as a madman, voyeur and alcoholic, but in the last few years of his life he became a sought-after superstar and media darling. This exceptonally compelling scenic collage brings to the stage something of the poetry of Tichý’s underlit, obscure photographs. 16. září / 16th September 14:00 Komorní divadlo / Chamber Theatre Dennis Kelly: LOVE AND MONEY (directed by Jan Mikulášek); DIVADLO V DLOUHÉ, PRAHA / THEATRE IN DLOUHÁ, PRAGUE This cruel comedy by contemporary Britsh author Dennis Kelly deals with love in its many forms. It consists of several stories which intertwine in a sophistcated way. The world of Kelly’s play is full of confused and wounded people, pretending not terribly convincingly that everything is absolutely fne. The more doggedly they try to be normal, the madder they become. This producton, by Jan Mikulášek, one of the best young Czech directors, makes efectve use of microphones, video cameras and projectons to create an impression of the world as a reality show from which there is no escape. Performance length: 90 min. 17:00 Sál Peklo / Peklo Hall Rainer Werner Fassbinder: GARBAGE, THE CITY AND DEATH (directed by Dušan Pařízek); PRAŽSKÉ KOMORNÍ DIVADLO – DIVADLO KOMEDIE / PRAGUE CHAMBER THEATRE – COMEDY THEATRE, PRAGUE A creatve, slightly updated producton of German enfant terrible Fassbinder’s scandalous and politcally-incorrect play (its premiere did not take place untl 1985, ten years after it was writen). The decadent environment of a café – both on stage and in the auditorium – gradually introduces a pleiad of sick and socially-dangerous characters, types who we unfortunately meet more and more often in real life. A rivetng staged commentary, by director Jan Mikulášek, on a century in which important roles were played by war, the discovery of the bra and of perforated toilet paper. This original combinaton of humour, mystfcaton and historical fact is a bizarre testmony to the world of the twenteth century. Performance length: 120 min.
