Connected Living Connected Living Mobilising the Internet of Things In January 2015, Machina Research predicted the number of mobile connected devices will grow from 7.3 billion in 2014 to 10.4 billion in 2020. By the end of the decade, this explosive growth will realise an addressable revenue opportunity for mobile operators of nearly US$1.1 trillion. There will also be significant growth potential for other participants in the eco-system. GSMA’s vision is to enable the Internet of Things and create a world in which consumers and businesses enjoy rich new services connected by intelligent and secure mobile networks. The Connected Living programme is GSMA’s initiative to help operators add value and accelerate the delivery of new connected and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) devices and services. Through industry collaboration, promoting appropriate regulation, optimising networks and developing key enablers GSMA is supporting the growth of M2M in the immediate future and laying the foundations for the Internet of Things in the longer term.

Digital Commerce Across sectors such as retail, transport, payment, e-commerce and advertising, businesses and consumers are increasingly looking to Digital Commerce to provide flexible and efficient transaction services. Innovative new products and services designed to take advantage of Internet-enabled mobile devices and near field communication (NFC) technology are being released with increasing regularity. Bringing together mobile operators, merchants, banks, payment networks, transport operators and services providers, the GSMA’s Digital Commerce programme supports the deployment of mobile commerce services. Working across the mobile ecosystem, the programme fosters collaboration, builds specifications and guidelines for technical implementation, and develops value propositions for adjacent sectors. OrangeCash in France; SmartPass in Germany, Spain, Italy and Netherlands; Tapit in Switzerland; SureTap in Canada; and Mobile Wallet in China are among more than 55 commercial services that have already been launched.

Personal Data The New Standard in Digital Authentication Built on the successes and strategic insights delivered by the GSMA Mobile Identity Programme in 2013, the mission of the GSMA Personal Data Programme is to deliver digital identity solutions that offer safe, seamless and convenient consumer experience, consistency of user interface and low barriers to entry across the digital identity eco-system. One of the top four programmes prioritised by the GSMA, the Personal Data initiative is developing Mobile Connect, a fast secure login system that enables individuals to access their online accounts with just a single – or even no - click. Mobile Connect provides different levels of security from low-level website access to highly secure bank-grade authentication. Passwords are a thing of the past for users subscribed to a participating operator when they click on a website’s Mobile Connect button.

Network 2020 With the shift in mobile telecommunications towards internet protocol (IP)-based content and services, mobile operators need a new model for delivering All-IP mobile services – VoLTE, RCS and other enriched communications. This broad portfolio of IP communication services enabling the ‘Green Button Promise’ will help operators offer richer and more engaging services and help them regain customer relevance. The focus of the Network 2020 Programme in 2015/16 is to drive more operator launches of unilateral VoLTE and RCS services and accelerate the launches of interconnected IP communication services. The range of All-IP based services such as VoLTE, conversational video as well as rich messaging and voice are accessed via a ‘Green Button’ on a device, giving a trusted customer experience. This experience can be further enriched using IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) based services (for example: show my location, see what I see, chat in call, call a taxi for your friend). In addition, the Programme will continue to enhance specifications of IP communications services with converged enriched capabilities from Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE), Video-over-LTE, Voice-over-WiFi (VoWiFi) and Rich Communications Services (RCS). With an eye to the longer term, work will also cover the development of a network roadmap for 4G evolution on the road to 5G, maximising network profitability. This includes evaluation of new opportunities in virtualisation and traffic management.

Advocacy The GSMA Advocacy Group works to further the goals of the mobile industry though direct engagement with its members and collaboration with the wider ecosystem. Its focus is on promoting the value and impact of the mobile industry as a partner to governments and influencing the public debate on key issues of policy. The Advocacy Group also partners with Operators, non-government organisations and the wider industry to develop commercial services for the underserved through the GSMA Mobile for Development programme.
Public Policy The Public Policy team represents the industry on the most pressing issues of the day in order to shape the regulatory and policy environments and ensure that investment and innovation continue to flourish. The Future of Regulation programme aims to promote fair and proinvestment regulation in a world where traditional telecommunication services are becoming a part of a broader Internet landscape. Through the GSMA’s Digital Inclusion programme, policy work is conducted in the area of taxation, network economics – in particular for rural access – and demand-side issues, such as access to local content and digital literacy. The Spectrum programme works to ensure that mobile operators have timely and affordable access to appropriate spectrum to meet the rapidly growing demand for mobile broadband services. In 2015, a major area of work will be directed towards securing additional mobile spectrum at the ITU’s World Radiocommunication Conference in November. www.gsma.com/publicpolicy 21

Mobile For Development GSMA’s Mobile for Development programme brings together mobile operator members, the wider mobile industry and the development community to catalyse the development of new, mobile-enabled, commercial services to address the needs of the underserved. Financial Inclusion works with mobile operators and the financial industry to accelerate the availability of secure, convenient and affordable financial services for the unbanked. Further work is undertaken in key vertical market segments such as agriculture and health to demonstrate through practical examples the role mobile plays in transforming traditional sectors of the economy.

Testimonials Kaoru Kato President and CEO NTT DOCOMO, INC. As a fully participating member of GSMA, NTT DOCOMO has been proactively contributing toward sharing and discussion of future strategy for the industry and other pertinent topics. For instance, we have endorsed the strategic initiatives driven by the GSMA, and in that we were among the first to commercialise the Embedded eUICC for M2M devices based on the GSMA Embedded SIM. We are also actively pursuing the discussion on future roaming with VoLTE, as well as promoting trial activities. These activities are not only for creating our own business opportunities - they are also enabling us to play a key role in the development and innovation of the mobile industry as a whole. We believe this was made possible by joining GSMA, who provides resources and venues for strong collaboration among operators.

Silvio Kutic, Founder and CEO Infobip We joined the GSMA way back in 2008 and since then, new perspectives and new opportunities to contribute to global telecoms initiatives keep opening up. Participation in GSMA Working Groups allowed us to share and improve highest-level technical knowledge of telecoms, which we were able to apply immediately and boost the mobile ecosystem. Looking forward, we hope to work even more in the constantly expanding space for cooperation created by our friends at the GSMA.
