Carmen Tang F. 5A A Book Report on Andrew Matthews’‘Making Friends’ Andrew Matthews has launched a series of book about attitude in life and dealing with relationships. Such as “Follow your heart”, “Being a Happy Teen”, “Happiness Now” etc. Among the series, I chose “Making Friends” for my book report. This is the first time I read books about philosophy in English. The English used is easy to understand and the cartoons make the book more interesting. He makes use of stories to illustrate complicated philosophy and bring out different meaningful lessons. The stories are common events happening around us. I can see myself there. Thus, I find the book convincing. Not only is it suitable for teenagers, but also for children, adults and elderly. People make friends in every stage of life and this book is about the importance of making friends. “Making Friends” is a book about the others - those we love, those who help us and those who depend on us. The book tells us ways to deal with prophets of dooms and to prevail over gossip, pettiness and anger. If we want a friend, we must be a friend to the others first. If we expect others to do something, we must do it first. It is clear that everyone needs friends. No one on earth can live happily without friends because we all need love. Love is a motivation of our work. Human relationships are sources of life’s pleasure and pain. If we have better relationships, we will have more friends and less pain in our life. Many things are less fun to do alone. I enjoy my friends’company when I watch a movie, eat dinner, go to school, and plan vacations. Friends are the ones we love and care. We will still survive without our job, television, school etc. But it is a different matter if we lose our dearest friends. A joyous life is one filled with friends whom we can trust, share our opinions or argue with. Making friends can be a simple task, but it may be a difficult task too. It is easy if you have a good attitude. However, it is hard to make a friend if you have a bad attitude. To make a friend, you must first have healthy self-esteem. We have to tell our friends about our feelings, tell them that we care for them. But at the same time, we should leave some space for their own activities because everyone needs space. The book helps me in all my relationships with my family, friends and classmates. It is an inspiring book which helps me to reflect on myself and to make
changes. I will recommend this book to my friends, especially those who are shy and lack of confidence. I hope that they can lead a brand new life with more friends after reading ‘Making Friends’.
